The 1971 Track season at Gale -Ettrick proved to be an interest- ing one. The season started slowly in the win department in most of our dual meets as we lacked depth and numbers of participants. We often won as many in events as other teams, but the second and third places in many cases went to the opposition, and Gale -Ettrick was unable to do the same in the events won by the other teams. The larger the meet, the better our thin clads did. One of the biggest thrills for all of us came at Memorial Field in La Crosse on May 1, 1971. It was the Red Raider Relay Qformerly Pea- cock Relaysy which the Redmen of Gale -Ettrick won. We came in first out of nineteen schools in class C division. Mike Baer won the long jump and 100-yard dash. Our 880-yard relay team won its event with Mike Baer, john Byom, Bob Oines, and Greg Biesen teaming up for the honors. We also gained points with Ed Kopp's efforts in putting the shop, and also with efforts of the mile relay team. Bob Oines second in the pole vault added the final team points. In the Trempealeau County meet held at Winona's jefferson Field we placed third behind Arcadia and Trempealeau. We placed sixth out of fifteen teams in the I-lolmen Relays. The Coulee Conference was very strong in Track in 1971. Evidence of this was seen at the State Track meet at Monona Grove High School Field in Madison. Three conference schools placed among the top ten in class C competition. Gale -Ettrick placed sixth in total points. Mike Baer won class C Long Jump with 21' 4 1f2 for his best effort of the year. john Byom, Bob Oines, Greg Biesen, and Mike Baer placed fifth in state in the 880 yard relay with a 1:34. 1 time. Tim Twesme, Mike Baer, john Byom, and Bob Oines earned a third place in the mile re- lay with a time of 3:33. 5. A great deal of work and time was put into the successes achieved by our track team in 1971. With more depth and numbers participating, the season could have been even more successful. I-lard work was rewarded by winning the Red Raider Relays and a very respectable effort at the state meet. TRACKMEN WIN ABOVE: just a hop, skip and a jump john. ROW 1: G. Ouellette, T. Smith, R.
