GHS's growth has been in direct proportion to Gainesville's expan- sion. The city's population soared from 30,000 in 1960 to 60,000 in 1966. Evidence of growth is everywhere - a 500 bed V.A. hospital, a new law center for the University, and a shopping mall nearing completion just north of GHS. Trying to build for the future, the Alachua County School Board pro- posed a school bond election. But, the issue was defeated and GHS faces even more crowding. --. i E

Teachers, working on the late shift with a class until 4:30 and remaining for after-class chores, found them- selves walking into winter evening sunsets. Assemblies were for individual classes. Sophomores alone filled the auditorium which once seated the entire student body. Seniors were given parking prior- ities and took over the junior space. Junior cars were parked on 19th Lane and 16th Terrace. Sophomores were not encouraged to drive to school and often walked blocks be- tween lanes of parked senior and junior cars to reach the campus. 8

ln the midst of many changes, GHS clung to established customs and cherished traditions. Canes were still dynamite, ser- vice clubs mowed their grassplots, students were beseiged to buy can- dy, stickers, ribbons, annuals, Bar- B-Que tickets, choruses produced a fabulous musical, money was do- nated for scholarships, and, finally, in June the long white line marched to Pomp and Circumstance. K
