G HR WELCOMES MIRI Miriam with her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Hanvey and Cathy. Miriam with her friends between classes. Miriam Gutkind, our foreign exchange student from Uruguay, lives with Cathy Hanvey, a freshman, and her family. Depending on their grade level, Uruguayan students take between ten and twelve subjects in school. These subjects include math, literature, geography, history, English, French, physics, chemistry, biology, civic education, psychology, music, and art. They go to school six days each week for four hours a day. The subjects each student takes depends on the career he has chosen. Miriam has chosen to become either a psychologist or an interpreter.

Margarita Andrades finds Gahr very different from her school in Chile which is 160 years old and only for girls. Chilean students have to take twelve subjects which include world history, physics, biology, chemistry, civics, English, French, Spanish, and algebra. Margarita has taken English for five years and French for four, but it's been mostly grammar and not conversation. By the time she finishes high school, Margarita must know what profession she wants to study for. Because she likes children, she either wants to be an obstetrician or a pediatrician.
