A lone person stands surveying the halls, thinking back over the events of the year gone by. He remembers the first day of school which brought the renewal of old friendships and the joy of making new ones. Fond memories are held of the Howdy Dance which welcomed the freshmen and was highlighted by the crowning of lVlr. and Miss Howdy. He recalls the excitement he felt attending football games and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. After football came cross-country, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, tennis, and golf. Echoing down the empty corridors are a Senior's thoughts of Ditch Day, Baccalaureate, Graduation, and the All-Night Party, events which brought his years at Gahr to a close. As he slowly walks down the lonely corridors, he realizes that for the last time he is traveling the paths which helped to mold his future. 4 DEDICATIO During our first three years, you accepted the responsibility of supervising our annual and newspaper staffs. ln addition to this, you were an English teacher as well as head of the English Department. You managed, under these taxing conditions, to be an inspirational teacher and also to meet publication deadlines. Difficult tasks, important decisions, and time limitations have played a big part in much of your life here at Gahr. During these past four years of labor here, your image has brightened, your reputation has grown, and your constant smile and happy hello have earned for you the admiration and respect of every administrator and student at Gahr. Nearly every one of the class of 1969, the first class to complete four full years at Gahr, have, at one time or another, been a student of yours. Because of your personal warmth, your steadfast dedication to duty, and your changeless glow and cheer among us, we, the 1969 Nlemoriae Aureae staff honor you, lVlrs. Marjorie Hart, through the dedication of this book. lVIrs. Hart takes great interest in individual student's work. Mrs. Hart enjoys a coffee break in the lounge. Accumulation of basic knowledge has been supplemented with an activity program which offered personal growth through competition with other schools, and de- velopment of life-long personal friendships with fellow students. The adult staff at Gahr has been extremely pleased with the spirit, loyalty and performance of the student body. Achievement is a spring board to success which most students have dis- covered and which underclass still have the oppor- tunity to use to their advantage. My personal relationship with students, staff and community has been especially pleasant. lt is my sincere wish that all groups will be rewarded in full measure for the kindness, cooperation and effort which have made my first year at Gahr so memorable. Sincerely, Dr. Rants Congratulations to each and every student as we reach another milestone on the road to success. It has been a year with considerable progress in the fields of student leadership, athletics, scholar- ship, and citizenship. As students, you have dem- onstrated the qualities of loyalty, sportsmanship, team play, sincerity, industriousness and leadership which have carried Gahr High School to new heights and should carry all of you far on the Highway of Progress. Whatever obstacles are found in your way may be overcome by this same deter- mination. Best wishes. Sincerely, Charles C. Ledbetter lVlay you now and always look through the pages of lVlemoriae Aureae with a feeling of pride and satisfaction. I hope that Gahr High has helped you to gain knowledge not only in subject matter but also in citizenship, in the satisfaction of doing a job well and to the best of your ability and most of all, the importance of respecting the democratic way of life. The crowning event of the year was the Junior- Senior Prom held on May 10th. To help finance it, the Juniors started the year out by sponsoring the traditional Howdy Dance. Other projects included the selling of chocolate footballs, megaphones, pennants, and book-covers. Excite- ment was aroused by the raffling off of a '56 black and white Chevy, affectionately called The Beast. Secretary-Annie Hilverda Treasurer-Dan McKeever Historian-Marcia Becker With the help of newspaper drives, the Juniors were able to add that something extra to make this prom the best one ever. With this kind of determination the Class of 1970 has much to look forward to in their remaining year at Gahr. G HR WELCOMES MIRI Miriam with her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Hanvey and Cathy. Miriam with her friends between classes. Miriam Gutkind, our foreign exchange student from Uruguay, lives with Cathy Hanvey, a freshman, and her family. Depending on their grade level, Uruguayan students take between ten and twelve subjects in school. These subjects include math, literature, geography, history, English, French, physics, chemistry, biology, civic education, psychology, music, and art. They go to school six days each week for four hours a day. The subjects each student takes depends on the career he has chosen. Miriam has chosen to become either a psychologist or an interpreter. Margarita Andrades finds Gahr very different from her school in Chile which is 160 years old and only for girls. Chilean students have to take twelve subjects which include world history, physics, biology, chemistry, civics, English, French, Spanish, and algebra. Margarita has taken English for five years and French for four, but it's been mostly grammar and not conversation. By the time she finishes high school, Margarita must know what profession she wants to study for. Because she likes children, she either wants to be an obstetrician or a pediatrician. Margarita with her friends during lunch. Margarita with her American family, the Ellises. G HR WELCUMES MARG RIT SCIENCE CLUB Flow 2: Fl. Kumamoto A. Palcioni A. Henson Mr. Hoopes P. Spry S. The Madrigals is a select group of singersand is also directed by Miss DeLo. At the Christmas Program and the Spring Music Festival, the audience thoroughly enjoyed their fine performances. Miss Delo has an instinctive sense for good music and her choral groups sing only the best, whether it be religious, classical, folk, or popular. We hope that next year's choir will prove as worthy of the same praise as the 1969 choir. Director-Miss DeLo 2 CADETS Row 2 G. Lopez E. Branch B. Branch J. Hannan S. Gamble Row 1 E. Rivero M. The high point of the season was against Neff, the league champions. The Gladiators fought hard to the very finish only to fall short. The following week things fell into place with a win over Artesia our arch-rivals. Both coaches and student body are looking for- ward to next year and a fresh start.
