His ability to get right to the heart of any matter that con- cerns our school partly accounts for his efficiency. If a solu- tion to a problem exists, he will find it. Efficient though he is as an administrator, his good humor and personal Warmth have made him easily accessible to both students and faculty members. His uopen door policy, his frankness, and his concern for anyone who needs help contributes to this uapproachablen quality. Because, as both inspiration and guide, he has been such an integral part of our life at Gahr High School, We have chosen to dedicate the 1968 Memoriae Aureae to Mr. Willard Red- fern, our principal. We hope that by so doing we can at least partially thank him for all he has done and is doing for us who have been with him since the beginning of Gahr, and for those who will follow us. 5,-T-. eww 5 f 3 Q4- fs A r. gm M, lily: 195 Mig N Chit Wm A ea sqfw' ,Aw 53 Mr. Furgeson Mr. Fletcher Mr. Hansen Mrs. Whitney Dr. Miller Superin tendent Mr. Sto wers A ssocia te Superin tendent Mr. Hutchison Business Manager Mr. Wellman Administrator: Educational Facilities Mr. Vernon Director: Educational Services Mr. Knipple Administrator: Curricular Services Mr. Alarid Director: Certihcated Personnel District Administra tom' Mr. Warren President Dr. Dorius Mr. Elliott fl, Qs. ,K .W VN Prinegvals Message It is my hope that each of you can look at these pages with the feeling of pride and satisfaction for your part in the accomplishments made this year. Boosters' Made up of proud parents and interested members of the community, the Gahr Booster Club has done much in terms of promoting enthusiasm and sup- porting us in all of our activities. Always ready to help us, this year they have held raffles, filmed our games, and sponsored the Fall Sports Awards Night lcomplete with substantial refreshmentsl . All these things are typical activities of the Booster Club. But most important is their encouragement and interest. .L Corcoran, L. Patrick, F. Ziegler, and .L Highstreet, active members of Gahr, were snapped while attending a game. Our photographer somehow missed getting the many other Boosters into the picture. Foreign Exchange Student Jakob Brake- ederxon Jakob Brahe-Pederson, Gahris Foreign Exchange student this year, was born in Washington, D.C. in 1950. He went to Denmark when he was eight months old. When he is between eighteen and twenty-one, he must decide whether to become an American or a Danish citizen. This is the main reason he decided to come to America. Jakob feels this is the most difficult decision he must make. Jakob went to a boarding school in Denmark because his father is in the Danish Embassy in Warsaw, Poland, as an Agricultural Counselor. His father has been in Warsaw for five years, and for the first year of his life, Jakob lived with his parents behind the lron Curtain. To cherish his many experiences and impressions he bagan taking movies, and movie-making has become his favorite hobby. Jakob now has films from behind the Iron Curtain and films of his school in Denmark. He also enjoys design and mechanics. Jakob has no plans for the future except to further his education. He might go into the foreign service or design automobiles. 1 'x M it ff t The Gagnons: Jakob ls American family 5 ,-I in ' 4 : In 5 3 5 5 Q m K1 'H . ,gif TWIN! 'ff fwj kg 52, A M ff S' ' mg 35 . Ibe Crucible The nights of December 8 and 9 climaxed six weeks of rehearsals and preparations by the drama depart- ment for their production of The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Financially and theatrically a success, this allegorical drama of the early witchcraft trials in New England drew the largest audiences of any of Gahras productions. Much of this enthusiasm was evoked by the skill with which Karen Wray and Bob Lopez handled the leads. Each of the 20 cast members have good reason to be proud of the presentation. Passionate and bitter conflicts were to blame for the tension felt between John and Elzzabeth Proctor. Ibe East 1? Secular and Sacred Gahrls music department presented our annual Christmas program on December 13. The secular part of the program featured the vocal groups, and soloists Barbara Gorman, Bama Keys, Tom Bickal, and Pat Cloud. The songleaders enacted 'The Twelve Days of Christmas--Hawaiian Stylew to the accompaniment of the Drill Team. The second part of the program, which emphasized the sacred aspect of Christmas, centered around Turner's cantata, The Savior Has Come to Earthf narrated by Steve Shaffer and sung by the vocal groups with solos by Linda Arrellanes, Carol Becker, Kathy DeHaan, Linda Doyle, Barbara Gorman, Lindy Jackson, Robert Leal, Clayton Thompson, and Sue'Williams. Modern Dance students performed in both parts of the show. Since Miss DeLo was unable to be present during the weeks of rehearsal, Mrs. Frederickson, her right-hand-man,', deserves much of the credit for the success of the program. Even ts' This year there are approximately fifty students in band, all doing a great job of representing Gahr at football games, basketball games, rallies, concerts, festi- vals and parades. Although football season is the high point ofthe year, with all the marching, popular music and spectacular half-time shows, most of the hard work comes during the concert season. This period consists of many after-school and night-time practice sessions in the preparation of classical arrangements and big band tunes which are judged at festivals and parades. Although our Gladiator Band is classified as Class C, according to its size, it plays Class A music and does so dynamically. The band, in its performances, displays great pride and spirit that everyone respects. The band salutes Walt Disney in one of the many fabulous halftimes. Its members are the first to establish class colors, olive green and goldg a class mascot, Charlie Browng and motto To Be Rather Than to Seem? Theylve planted trees, installed cement benches, sponsored dances, and freed lions at rallies. They were responsible for Gahrls Decem- ber 15 snowfall and for the organization of our first Homecoming. The juniors have worked hard to build up their treasury to finance the best possible prom Uunior- Senior J by selling candy canes, boxed candy, pennants, megaphones, and also by sponsoring after-game dances. With the distinction of being the first graduating class to have spent all four years at Gahr, the Class of 1969 is proof that our foundation is a firm one. . JAQW.. Q W H X, aa :x,,1:, .V.., . uw .. This year the Gladiators finished with LIZ wrestler gm P0iflfS f0f neil' Pin- an overall record of 7-6-1 and 3-3-1 in league. The Gladiator wrestlers placed fourth in the league, and third in the league final tournament. The most consistent performers of the year were 136-pound Craig Schueller and 194-pound Paul Ziegler. Both were league champions, and both wrestled in the C.I.F. Prelims. Stacy Cody also was a consistent winner, taking second place in league finals and going to C.I.F. Pre- lims. Other strong and consistent wrestlers were Rudy Campuzano, Rick Strader, Jimmy Muniz, and Paul Hernandez. Javier Muniz proved to be the most outstanding newcomer to the squadg other newcomers to the team were Carl Yonkers, Walter Long, and Ronnie Tune. Five senior matmen helped pace the 1967- 1968 version of the Gladiator wrestling team to a rebuilding season. Although finishing in fourth place in league, the experience gained by the grapplers who will return next year is invaluable, Gahr High School should look forward confidently to future success.
