FOOTBALL The year 1956 wrll always be remembered as a wrnnmg season by the Imcoln Hrgh football players and fans Although the frnal standmg 5 4 was not sensatxonal the Llons showed great promrse of a champronshrp team for the 1957 season In honor of the 1956 team and head coach Rrchard Pflreger a short summary of each game wrll be presented so that the members and fans of the 1956 team may remember the thrllls of thrs season MARION FRANKLIN The Llons playmg host to the Red 1JCVllb rn a fog laden game wrth stood a second half rally to gam thelr frrst vrctory 18 13 Lions sconng touchdowns were akeway btralt and Shadwrck Roy Clark also mlde a 35 yard jaunt to the Red Devxls four where Doug Shadwlck sneaked for the touchdown MIFFLIN Nlrfflm s powerhouse romped over the Irons rn both teams second game 34 0 The loss was Gahanna s f1rst to Mlfflln ID slx years and ended a 12 game wlnnmg streak whlch began late rn 1954 for the Ltons Nhfflm went home w1th the Lrttle Blue ug for the srxth trme rn twenty one clashes between the two rrval schools GROVEPORT The Lrons downed therr second v1ctory tn three starts by defeatmg Grove port 2013 The Crulsers never led the Lrons w1th Clark scorrng 2 touchdowns and akeway scorlng the 3rd tally Lmcoln scored once ID each of the frrst three perrods Groveport pushed down one touchdown 1n the second and fourth quarters Hard blockrng alert defensrve actron and frne runnrng by the Llons were very much rn ew rdence rn thls contest REYINOLDSBURG Reynoldsburg upset the Lrons nn the second half and won the game 19 14 on thelr own freld The halftlme score favored bahanna 14 7 Gahanna touchdowns were made by Roy Clark and Xhllard jakeway erry Byer s dropklck was good after both touchdowns WHITEHALL The Lrons had therr hands full to subdue a spunky Whrtehall team 1914 Wrllard akeway ran 12 yards for a touchdown 1n the frrst quarter to put Gahanna 1n the lead but Whitehall came back 1n the second quarter to tally and make good the extra pornt and lead at the half 7 6 But the L1ons showrng therr competrtrve sprrrt came back to urn w1th touchdowns by Wrllard akeway and Wlb Straxt 19 14 CANAL WINCHESTER The Blue and Cold romped to therr 4th wm by defeatlng Canal Wm chester 27 13 The Lnons scored four touchdowns 1n the frrst three perrods The scores were made by Wrllard akeway Wrb Strart Doug blldLlWlClx and erry Byers The Indlans scored rn the frrst and last quarters The Lrons played one of the season s best games to glve our Homecoming Queen a v1ctory DUBLIN The Dublm bhamrocks set the Lrons back on thexr haunches for the Lxons thrrd loss of the season 14 9 The contest was fought hard all the way and both teams showed very strong defenses as only two pomts were scored 1n the entlre second half Gahanna s touchdown was made by Roy Clark after a 61 yard march Dublln s Nhke Karser was tackled rn the end zone by an aggressrve Lmcoln lme for the fmal two pomts HAMILTON The Hamrlton Rangers put an end to any hope of a 1956 County League Cham pronshlp for the Lmcoln Lrons by defeatrng them 26 6 Gahanna s lone touchdown came rn the thrrd quarter after Roger Osborne recovered a Ranger fumble on thelr own 11 yard l1ne Roy Clark clxmaxed a serles of plays by plungrng for the touchdown NEW ALBANY The Lrons cltmaxed the1r 1956 football season w1th a run away v1ctory over our nelghbors from New Albany by a score of 54 6 Lmcoln scored 6 pomts rn the f1rst pertod 21 IH the second 13 rn the thrrd and I4 rn the fourth quarter The Eagles drd not tally unt1l the fourth perrod The blue and gold was sparked by the brtllrant runnmg plays by Clark Strart and jakeway the pass and recervrng team of Shadwrck and Tallman Durrng the course of the game Coach Pflreger replaced the regular team Wlfh an all semor lme up The seniors drove 57 yards to brmg to an end therr hrgh school football careers by makrng a 5 yard touchdown Thus ended a successful wrnnlng season for the Lmcoln grrdders ' 9 7 1 1 1 ' 1 L - , ' ' ' , ' .
