Gazing skyward, we pause to read the imprint of Time on these magnificent towers. Yes, there are marks of strength, en- durance, struggle, nobility, balance, and beauty in their pur- pose and outlook. To us, the Youth of America, these towers symbolize a design for living, for working, and for playing in this freedom loving land of ours. With our many achievements in mind, we have under- taken the task of breaking all previous records. Besides finding employment for gratlmttes. she tnzilaes arrangements for students about to enter college or other specialized schools. Students are thankful to her for her as- sistance in their numerous intlivitlnal problems. MR. T. BENSON The xtttentlztnce tounselor's duties involve checking attendance. working with the truant officer. and acting as the boys' advisor. Due to the co-opt-rzuion of division teachers and stu- dents, Mr. 'l'. Benson is able to report that at- tendance has improved and tardiness has been greatly reduced. MR. BULFIN Mr. llulfin is the busybody of the school. His position as war co-ordinator includes the duties of managing bond and scrap drives and spon- soring the clean-up committee. Besides direct- ing the Hall Guides and llshers and managing the supply room, he is the public relations rep- resentative of the school. THE Ll BRARI.-XNS Semper l'aratus expresses beautifully the work of our librarians, Miss Crawford and Miss Ruddy. The organization of the library has been excellent under their supervision. I.. lizlrllc-s Hn- gan Q If 153' 4, M: FLORENCE SCHARFENSTEIN Miss Florence Scharfenstein, division teacher of 802, died on Saturday, Jan- uary l9, 1945, after a long illness. I Born in Cassville, VVisconsin, she later moved to McGregor, Iowa, where she spent her childhood days. After her high school training, Miss Scharfenstein entered the University of Chicago. There she majored in classical subjects and received her degree in Latin. Before coming to the Herzl junior High School in Chicago, Miss Scharfen- stein taught in Hammond, Indiana. In 1939, she was one of the first members of the new Gage Park High School faculty. ln our school, she imparted her knowl- edge of Latin and mathematics. All those who knew her were impressed with her vast store of knowledge and her sincerity of purpose. The Reverend Hugh MacKenzie, pastor of the Morgan Park Congregational Church, conducted the services which preceded her interment in Mount Hope Cemetery. Many faculty members and students attended the services. Left to mourn her, is her beloved mother, Mrs. Mary Scharfenstein. O A Tribute To one who has given the light of her smile. P lor, Sponso NDINGZ Gloria Charl -' ' Kolb cs H ood ' Hlorking eagerly and cheerfully is exactly what the members of the Service Club have been doing ever since its organization in October, 1940. Aiding the members in every possible manner has been their sponsor, Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor. Of all the students enrolled, seniors represent ZTMZ per cent of the members. The juniors represent 245 per cent, and the sophomores make up 31 per cent of the members. Freshmen, too, contribute their important service and already their group makes up IZW per cent of the entire membership in the club. The duties rendered by these groups vary. They are the program helpers library assistants, office clerks, stamp and bond salesmen, lunchroom attendants, hall guides, ushers, public address crews, stags hands, and towel service clerks. However, the club does not believe in all work and no playg therefore, it attempts to repay the students by giving a semi-annual breakfast after which a short skit is portrayed. Also following the breakfast, the graduating members receive the last bar of their service pins which signifies the splendid service they have given so willingly. Wartime shortages have curtailed the amount of supplies on hand. Rubber bands, locks, paper clips, and certain types of paper have almost entirely disap- peared from the shelves.
