N? as li'OlQliWORD .s Icarus launched himself on a new adventure, flying, so we, the first graduates of Gage Park High School, are now launching ourselves on a new and important ad- venture, the ICARIAN. When Icarus took up the experiment of flying, little did. he realize that it would result in huge airliners soaring smoothly through the sky. So we, the graduates of the Class of l94l and the citizens of tomorrow, endeavor to rise to new heights of success, and achievement in whatever undertakings we may choose. P R I N C I P A L I' -. DEDICATICDN ICAWRIAN OF l94l It was fortunate that Mr. William Abrams was assigned to head the Gage Park High School. His experience as principal of Wendell Phillips High School has qualified him for this responsible position. Because of his intelligence, per- severance, foresight, and courage, Gage Park has successfully Weathered its first, its hardest years. We are proud of our pilot to Whom We gratefully dedicate our first Icarian. PRlNC,lPAL'S MESSAGE To the Graduates of Iune, 1941: lt seems but a very short time since We first met in the school auditorium. As seniors for two yearsjyou now enjoy the distinction of being members of the first graduating class of Gage Park High School. During the brief period of the school's existence you- and the school have grown and de veloped simultaneously. - . The benefits which youhave received from your attendance at this school and the formation of the school's character are reciprocal: individually you have developed your personality While you assisted in molding the character of the school. lt is our hope that the training you received, the associations you made, and the events which occurred during your two years at Gage Park will be the instrumentalities for the devel- opment of those traits essential to a happy and useful life. Michael A. Ruddy Construction of the Gage Park High School was begun on De- cember 28, l927 when the Board of Education purchased proper- ty known as Swing's Farm, which is now our school cam- pus. The building project was abandoned for lack ot funds until 1938 when the work was resumed. Although this school was planned originally as a girls' technical school to be known as the Verdi School, it was renamed Gage Park High School, a co-educational school. At last the great efforts of civic- minded individuals and groups were rewarded in the opening of the Gage Park High School, a modern two million dollar structure. Its dedication took place on October 26, 1939, with DEDICATION GAGE PARK HIGH SCHOOL Iames F. Kovarik A Mrs. Iohn K. Beers Robert W. Schulze . Ierry Pech the welcoming address deliv- ered by Mr. William Abrams, principal, who invited the audi- ence to inspect the building. Other addresses were made by such distinguished personages as Dr. William H. Johnson, su- perintendent of schools, and Mr. James B. McCahey, president of the Board of Education. This formal ceremony was attended by representatives of many clubs and civic bodies, such as Gage Park Citizens' Improve- ment Club, Gage Park Parent- Teacher Association, Gage Park Women's Club, and the South- west Civic Federation. Thus be- gan the story oi the Gage Park High School whose history is in the making. Q: 1- GAGE PARK HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATION EXERCISES OCTOBER 26, 1939 1. Posting of Colors .......... .,........ Miss Nielsen Miss Halloran Miss Mae Callahan, co-pilot at Gage Park, is indispensable to the administration, for her important job is to keep our school running smoothly. She must see that Gage Park functions properly in all respects. ln addition, she is greatly responsible for the social development of our students, for she plans the year's social calendar. Miss Harriet Smith holds a most respon- sible position as administrative aid at Gage Park. Very often two and one must add up to four in the difficult job ot planning future classes. However, in spite of in- numerable problems, Miss Smith remains calm and self- contained While advising and directing the programming. SPCDNSORS M. Martin B. Friedman C. Butler E. Ashland M. Mr. Quinn's specific duty is to act as disciplinarian of the boys, While Miss Schaefer's special duty is that of placement counselor. Seniors rely upon her for assis- tance in finding positions. a Another important phase of the adjustment department is under the super- vision of Miss Rochfort. Not only does she set up individualized educational plans for students, but she also has charge of the National Youth Admin- istration. ,We all owe a vote of thanks to the Adjustment Staff for its aid to the student body. Ralph Greener Vice-President . . . .... Meri Petolick Secretary . . . . . .Mildred Moses . Treasurer ..................... Adele Kostecki ln September 1939, the open doors of the new Gage'Park High School welcomed the incoming students from the neighboring schools. Among the entering students were approximately two hundred juniors, who were destined to be the leaders, founders of clubs and organizations, and the first graduates of the Gage Park High School. Endeavoring to put Gage Park High School on the map, enterprising stu- dents began to organize clubs. The girls athletically inclined decided that they would form a club that would bind them together and allow them to attempt things on a larger scale, and so the GAA. was formed. Not to be outdone, the boys went in for bowling and basketball. However, athletics were not the only interest of the third year students of Gage Park High School. An honor society was formed by students eager to obtain and maintain a high scholastic average. Such students were awarded honor pins. Since many of the boys and girls were willing to serve their school, it was decided that some special recognition should be given this group: thus, the Service Club was introduced. In each and every one of these clubs our seniors reflected their eagerness and enthusiasm to make Gage Park one of the best schools in the city of Chicago. Today this class of two hundred seniors, our future doctors, lawyers, scien- tists, nurses, secretaries, technicians, and business men, are ready to face the world. They are setting out to make a place for themselves. With enthu- siasm in their hearts, with heads held high, and with the determination to succeed, these first graduates of Gage Park are ready to find themselves. Success to the FIRST graduation class. Gage Park is proud of you. Ewflfr- f E. Angelico ' ,I ,ii K. Annen yi N. Apra M. Bade T. Baffes R. Bakotich S. Baron F. Bartlett R, Bizub I. Brenner U. Browning M. Buc D. Bucher M. Bugajsky M. In response to this repeated cry of the members of the Senior Class, the seed for an annual took root. When Miss Rose Sherman was named chairman of the annual and a group of capable faculty mem- bers Was named to assist with the Work, action really began. Soon photographers, engravers, print- ers, and staff members were interviewed to deter- mine the most highly qualified. In Ianuary, a publicity assembly acquainted the student body with the progress made by the annual staff. At this time, too, through song and verse was explained the need for revenue to finance the an- nual. Already financial assistance had been ren- dered by the En-Gager through the proceeds of the Lei Dance. The Student Council also contributed a substantial amount which enabled the annual staff to make an initial bank deposit. I Until this time the annual was nameless. Early in February a naming contest took place. Of all the names submitted, Icarian, suggested by Iesse Brenner, proved the favorite. Thus, with as staff of energetic and ambitious Workers to review, to nar- rate, ancl to dramatize the events at Gage Park High School for the year 1940-1941, it is hoped that every- one's high school days have, in some way, been permanently recorded in the lcarian. V E Lucille Kalal V Harry Ongman Marilyn Klix Miss Falahey FOR 1941 The En-Gager staff was organized in September, 1940 to function as an aid to the school and as om aid to the pupils who participate in this activity. ' While the primary business of the staff members is to publish school news, this group shares with all other organizations in the school in the following purposes: educating the community as to the Work of the school: creating and expressing school opinion: capitalizing the achievements of the school: ex- pressing the idealism of the school: stimulating worthwhile activitiesf building school spirit: and developing right standards of conduct. To the individuals who Work on the staff come opportunities for training-in Writing, publishing, organization, salesmanship, and business management. These experiences develop qualities of cooperation, tact, accuracy, tolerance, understanding, f-responsibility, initiative, and leadership. EDITORIAL STAFF . Yes, surely our band and orchestra deserve this praise, for from -their humble beginnings under Miss Lila Barnes in 1940, they have made much progress. Beset by difficulties these organizations overcame such disadvantages as lack of instruments and a band room. The band and orchestra, directed by Mr. Channon Krupsky, participate in almost every school program.
