Victories over Etowah. Tuscaloosa and Anniston were the highlights of his work. Teel's four year mark at Gadsden shows 25 wins, 14 defeats, and 4 ties. JACK UCURLYH GREEN was a member of the triumphant Alabama Rose Bowl team in 19-16. Came to Gadsden in 1948. working with tackles, guards and centers which were all inexperienced he molded them into a hard charging wall. HERBERT HERB BURTON came to Gadsden in 1949 from Talladega. I-le played his high school athletics under Coach Teel at jasper. Starting from scratch he has continued the schools reputation of turning out great flanksmen. MANAGERS THE TIGERS' ROAR Gadsden's 1951 Tigers after starting off with a boom and losing two and tying one mid-season game advanced rapidly in the fall days. VC'hen the Etowah conquest was ranked in they were in the state top bracket. Mid-season losses to Bessemer and Little Rock were soon things of the past with victories over Anniston, Sansom, Coffee, and Etowah falling before the roaring Tigers. Sparking the Gadsden attack were three running aces: Piggy Watford, Don Connor and jerry Connell. Ranked first in Etowah county on total yardage gained and points scored Watford averaged over five yards per carry. Connor ranked second in Etowah on yardage gained and points scored. jerry Connell was a great runner but was also a great blocker. Tommy Bentley was great at quarterback with his passing and signal-calling. Bill Boman, Lowell Brown, Parham Booker and Lee Enloe performed extremely well. Gadsden's forward wall, which was supposed to be weak and inexperienced, became a great stalwart wall with such boys as Bill Patterson, Bill Boyd, Roger Ballard, Law- rence Weeks, jerry Clements, Duck Wildman, Gary Snyder, and Bobby Aultman. The centers were a small problem, Paul Cothran and Henry Sturkie doing most of the snaping. Wallace McDuffie and Richard Otwell also saw a lot of action. Ends: Pierce and Carl Harrison led Gadsen's pass receivers. Harold Copeland, james Hall and jerry Sims helped Pierce on the defense. Gadsden .,,....,. .,,..t. 4 6 Heflin ...... ....
