A GREAT TEAM THOSE 1948 TIGERS Writing the final brilliant chapter to a glorious season, the 1948 Tigers defeated a strong Marianna eleven 26-0 to wind up an undefeated season during which they scored 398 points to 25 for their ten opponents. This band of fighting Tigers was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, ever to wear the Orange and Black of the Gadsden County High. There were no tempera- mental individual stars on this exceptional team. Each player did to the best of his ability what he was told to do and from this source sprang the great team-work which characterized the performances of this eleven during the entire season. We could not attempt to single out each player and tell of his exploits as an individual. But, rather would we make this statement, that the forward wall of the team from end to end was the fastest charging, hard hittingest group of high school gridders observed in many a year. Back of them played what was perhaps the best balanced backfield ever to wear shoulder pads under an Orange and Black jersey. It was the combination of the two that made such a great team. For one, without the other, could not have rolled up such an impressive record. Their goal line stands; spectacular running and passing and hard blocking paid big dividends when the final score was added. This team was awarded a trip to the Orange Bowl in Miami to witness the game between Georgia and Texas on New Year's Day. This trip was made possible by interested townspeople and was thoroughly enjoyed by the whole team. Excerpts from THE GADSDEN COUNTY TIMES
