P.O. Box 918 Havana, Florida 32333 Volume VI, 1985 Introduction 1 2 Introduction With a flurry of papers and a surge of excitement, the 1984-85 school year was ushered in. In the heat of the late summer, GCA welcomed new students, fresh from summer and eager to make new friends. The first few days flew by in a whirl wind of new faces, new experiences, and new friendships. The challenge of the new semester lay ahead, and as the days and weeks passed, each new encounter was met head-on. Before too long, the overwhelming anxiety over homework, term papers, and math class soon melted in the warmth of newly formed friendships and understanding staff members. Most students (by years' end) agreed it was all worth it. Introduction 3 Table Of Contents Introduction Seniors Underclassmen Academics 4 Introduction Introduction 5 This year we decided that instead of just showing you our administration's name's and picture's, we would let you get to know them on a more personal level. We asked them to tell us, in their own words, WHAT G.C.A. MEANS TO ME ... and this is what they said . . . Dr. L.A. Du Bose ... A great many people are very committed to preserving those values which made America great. Mr. T.W. Bolton ... An opportunity to teach the Gospel and the privilege and excitement of working with young people. 6 Introduction Mr. J.K. Darsey A witness of God's love in developing our youth academically and spiritually toward the betterment of mankind. Mrs. J.K. Darsey A source of God's abiding love in directing, guiding, and caring for our youth with an eternal purpose. Each instructor had to work on a curriculum for his her subject(s). Many diligent hours were spent writ- ing, examining, researching, typing and lastly, gathering all of this information together. Learning to better cultivate and discipline the minds and hearts of students was emphasized this year. Stu- dents can find their teachers a harbor of resource. Absent for picture: Mr. L. DuBose Mrs. Glenda Bolton Substitute Mrs. Peggy Suber Mrs. Barbara Arthur Substitute Mr. Mason always stresses his point. Academic 31 The Javelin staff: That loveable collection of characters forever on the spot with their cameras clicking, when you are involved in some bizarre escapade. Or, writing down every crazy thing that happens so the whole GCA world can read about it in all the captions. But, life is not all fun and games in the yearbook room. (Although most of it is!) There are pictures to be sorted, layouts to be prepared, copy to be written, ads to be sold, and of course, deadlines to meet. Nearly 10 people have contributed their talents this year in order to produce the quality book you now have in your hands. That adds up to an immeasurable amount of sacrificed study time, and worst of all, sleeping time! But, in the end a book is produced that carries the unique stamp of every individual who has supplied input for it, and that contains just a few of the countless memories made throughout the year. Most importantly, the GCA staffers are servants of the Lord, dedicated to serving Him, and willing to use their talents to produce a work glorifying to Him. (If we have conveyed that through this book, our work will have been a success.) 34 Activities The senior English class is given the bulk of the responsibility for the GADSDEN GRAPEVINE. Its purpose is to bring forth informative, inspirational, and humorous features. This paper encourages the writing talents of students and is also a means of communication between the school and the homes of the students. It encourages participation from every grade and segment of life at G.C.A. Activities 35 Row 1 K. Shokes, K. Hamilton, T. Goodwin, M. Andrews Row 2 Mr. T. Mason (adv.), T. Suber, L. Bryant, D. Finch, A. Beach, J. Young, L. Wagoner Row 3 C. Garrard, T. Garrard, B. McNeil This year the Beta Club traveled to Dayton, Tennessee for the annual Leadership Conference. On the way to Dayton they stopped overnight at Covenant College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On this trip, the Beta Club visited classes at Bryan College in Dayton and learned many leadership qualities to benefit them in years to come. 36 Activities Awards chapel was a rewarding experience for many students. High Achievers received recognition by their teachers and administration. Many received certificates for outstanding achievement and others were encouraged verbally to do better. Everyone held their breath as the top five students were announced in each class. We were all inspired to do our very best next year. Awards Chapel Activities 37 The 1984-85 'Crusader 4H Club' was involved in numerous activities throughout the year. We began the year with Gadsden County 4H Radio Auction, and an evening at Godfather's Pizza in Tallahassee. The 4Hers also went to St. George Island for day of sun and fun, and were involved with a livestock show, bake sales, and County Council meeting and events. We hope next year will be as much fun and rewarding as the 1984-85 year was. 38 Activities Chess Club Mr. Greg Rukes, for the second year in a row, sponsors the chess club. This year they have kept count of wins and losses on a scale. Ben Smith, president, was top contender in 1985 with Troy Arthur holding a close second. Front — W. Kelly, B. Ray, G. Mock, V. Rutten. Back — R. Stanley, T. Arthur, K. Jones, P. Parks, B. Smith, G. Rukes — Sponsor Activities 39 Participants were: T. Till, A. Beach, V. Rutten, P. Burke, V. Butler, T. McDaniel, G. Peacock, M. Youngblood, T. Goodwin, G. Young, M. Braswell, T. Dubose, L. Whiddon, J. Leidke, K. Coalson. 15 students were chosen to take part in a staged disaster from the Gadsden Memorial Hospital. They were taken to St. Johns Catholic Church where they were dressed up as accident victims of a bus wreck. Ambulances, police, and sherrifs arrived and tranported the students to the hospital. The patients were then taken care of accord- ing to their injuries. The hospital fed the patients and returned to school. The disaster was to see how the hospital would react to an accident with many victims, and if they could react competently. 40 Activities The Valentines Banquet The Seniors prepared a wonderful dinner for sweethearts of all ages. Wendell White entertained us with intricate trumpet music. Free McDonald's gift certificates, a watch, and necklace were given away. The evening proved to be a successful night for the Seniors. Activities 41 P. Hatcher, K. Coalson, D. Perry, T. Hood, J. Liedke, R, Strickland, S. Brockman, D. Dollar. This year in chorus we have had several new mem- bers including 6 new guys. The junior and senior chorus performed a Christmas program in chapel. The junior chorus sang for Easter, while the senior chorus travelled to several churches performing a spring can- tata. 42 Activities The Chorus practiced many tiring hours. They performed a beautiful medley of gospel songs at the Baccalaureate Service at Tallavana Baptist Church under the leadership of Mrs. Joan Elder, director. Activities 43 Chorus Varsity Row 1 A. Beach, P. Hatcher, T. Chester, G. Melvin Row 2 S. Merritt, D. Pontoriero, J. Liedke, R. Haire, W. Breeden, R. Braswell, D. McGuffy, J. Johns Row 3 D. Weeks, G. Young, M. Braswell, M. Savage, T. Hood, S. Culverson, R. Wheetley, K. Godwin, R. Tiller, C. Coalson, R. Bolton Mr. R. Bolton was the sponsor of our first-year of the Junior Fellowship of Christian Athletes (F.C.A.). Some of the activities conducted during this club in- clude basketball, softball, and volleyball. Our goal this year was to show a Christian attitude in all the sports we participated in. 44 Activities The Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club enjoyed a very fun and productive first year. The club took on several projects to help needy groups. The biggest project was a trip to the Lighthouse Children's Home, taking over a dozen bags of groceries to them for Christmas. Activities 45 This year we had a new club Christian Women of Tomorrow otherwise known CWOT. Many guest speakers came to share their knowledge and skills in health, nutrition, and facial care. The officers of the club are: Kim Fields, President; Dena Brockman, Vice President; Michelle Wells, Secretary; and Tina Shep- ard, Treasurer. 46 Activities On February 23 GCA was represented in the Big Bend High School Brain Bowl. The team made a good showing especially since the opponents were large Tallahassee school or cosolidated school. Activities 47 The 84- 85 Athletic Banquet was held at the fellow- ship hall of the First Baptist Church on May 3rd. This year's banquet was larger than ever before. Many awards were given out in every sport. Congratulations to all the award winners, and a special thanks to the Athletic Association for sponsoring the banquet. Awards Ceremony held in the church auditorium proved to be exciting — as it was announced the top 5 students in each grade A FSU training coach encouraging our students to strive on. 46 48 Sports The 1984-1985 Homecoming reception given for the Alumni was a success. Many past graduates attended this event and renewed old friendships. Mr. DuBose welcomed the old graduates. The Alumni enjoyed re- freshments served by the 1985 Senior girls. V !ii:r(ei I. Carol Jean Lowe Class Of 1985 1. The new reigning queen, Carol, with her court watches the other activities of the night. 2. Miss Allison Darsey, 1984 Homecoming Queen, was escorted by Leslie Brunson. 3. The crown bearer, Leah Rukes, was escorted by flower boy, Duke Touchton, as Laurel Cox and JoAnn Young watched on. 48 Sports 1985 Homecoming Court The Homecoming game was played against Appalachicola Sharks. Although our team added another loss to their record the evening was marked up for profitable experience. HOMECOMING GAME Front: B. Dodson, R. Ayers, S. Haire, J. Dodson, H. Wiggins, C. Goodwin, R. Kicking For Kicks When you combine thirty feet, fifteen heads, the result can be nothing less than the bruised shins, torn ligaments, and sore muscles of high school soccer. As the players take their positions on the field, the good- natured jests become snarls in the heat of battle. The legs become lethal weapons to drive the ball to the goal or to inflict pain on those that get in the way even as their heads become fog areas as a result of one-too many blocked shots. After a grueling and hard-driving season, the gold and green team reigned supreme in the men's competi- tion. 50 Sports Front: D. Jetton, K. Jollay, M. Hamilton, C. Brunson, L. Pontoriero Back: L. Cox, K. Tiller, A. Pickett, L. Wagoner, T. Till Coach: Ron Bolton Many purple hearts were awarded for fingernail scars re- ceived on the battlefield. In spite of busy schedules, tired bodies, and splintered shins, ladies vol- leyball remains one of the most popular activities on campus and certainly one of the most hazardous! 52 Sports Marbe Hamilton — Senior front: S. Kimsey, A. Davis, S. Merrit, D. Pontoriero, back: K. Barber, D. Perry, T. Hood, L. Demakowski, K. Hamilton Sports 53 Gadsden Christian's second year of Jr. High girls basketball proved to be very successful. We received new uniforms, were able to play in our new gym, and won seven games. These factors, plus the cooperative spirit of the team, made it a rewarding and enjoyable season. Probably the highlight of the season for the girls was the first victory against Maclay. It was also our first victory away from home. Other highlights were our victories over Sneads, Aucilla, and Holy Comforter. Sherri Merritt had an outstanding season, but without the support of Renee Weeks and Cathy Coalson it would have been a tough season. Improved play from Jenny Liedkc gradually became an important factor by mid-season. All of the girls improved dramatically by season's end. We appreciate the help of Rhonda Baxley, Nikki Johnson, Debbie Mercer, and Jocelyn Kinnard at practices. Being sixth graders, they were not allowed to play, but they worked with us faithfully at practice. 54 Sports Varsity Basketball Above: Coach Tom Bolton Below: Assistant Coach R. Bolton Front: W. With only 2 casualties in the first half, the faculty ladies were downed by 2. But the faculty men's team pulled them out by winning their game. The most exciting moment of the evening was during the Varsity-Alumni game, when Chuck Goodwin of the varsity team, set-up the last two points to break the tie, after going into over-time. 70 Sports The Gadsden Christian Academy Athletic Association has made some substantial accomplishments this past year. Through different fund raising projects, the association has been able to help the athletic program by contributing over $20,000.00 Some of the projects included: The building and sale of a house by Mr. Ron Tiller contributed the bulk of the money raised. The Association had a garage sale in Quincy and managed the concession stand for the games held in our new gym this year. Some of the programs we helped to finance include: Volleyball shirts Basketball uniforms Girls basketball uniforms Cheerleading uniforms Track equipment Baseball trip The Association also put on the Athletic banquet and provided all the trophies and awards. Sports 71 ELEMENTARY INTRAMURAL SPORTS The fourth-sixth grades enjoyed a varied in- tramural sports program this year, with soccer, basketball, track, and softball seasons. The Gladiators won the soccer championship, the Sixers won basketball, and the Braves took the softball title. The highlight event was on March 28th, when grades 3-6 competed for awards in track and field. Eighty-seven students competed for over 110 ribbons in nine events. Third grade standout Trey Youngblood took four first place ribbons. Fourth grade was led by jean Young with five first place ribbons. Stacey Davis and John Peavy led the fifth grade with five rib- bons, while Jocelyn Kinnard and Rhonda Bax- ley led the sixth grade with five ribbons apiece. Events included 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 400 meter run, 200 shuttle relay, 400 meter relay, discus throw, softball throw, high jump, and long jump. THANK GOD FOR YOU Thank God for you, good friend of mine, Seldom is freindship such as thine; How very much I wish to be As helpful as you've been to me — Thank God for you. When I recall from time to time How you inspired this heart of mine, 1 find myself inclined to pray, “God bless my friend this very day — Thank God for you. Of many prayer quests, one thou art On whom I ask God to impart Rich blessings from His storehouse rare. And grant to you His gracious care — Thank God for you. So often at the throne of grace There comes a picture of your face. And then instinctively I pray That God may guide you all the way — Thank God for you. Some day I hope with you to stand Before the throne at God's right hand, And say to you at journey's end. Praise God, you've been to me a friend — Thank God for you.
