The contributions and efforts of the entire Furman campus in this national problem was noteworthy. The thermostat was turned to 65°F (18°C) in most of the buildings to comply with President Carter's orders. Outside electric lighting was curtailed at night, especially around little-used areas of the campus. Students shortened their hot showers in order to conserve electricity, while becoming more conscious of leaky faucets, drafty windows and doors, and unused lights left on in rooms. The administration and maintenance at Furman even considered converting part of the campus' power to wood heat, since several tonnage of burnable by-products are produced each year during clearing processes on the campus grounds. 6 Opening

FAR LEFT: Four now s%vans have been introduced to the Furman lake this year to keep the old swan company. FAR RIGHT: Ducks are another of Furman's famous attractions, especially the white domestic Peking ducks FAR BOTTOM: A couple play a game of tag near the lake's edge after a filling Dining Hall meal. TOP: Feeding a duck flock can be a very tricky and sometimes hilarious experience. BOTTOM- One of the favorite pastimes for the boaters at Furman is sailing on the lake on a windy day. Opening 5
