Dr. Lesley Q. Wheatley; Education Dr. Norman Whisnant; Modern Foreign Languages Dr. William R. Yoder; Philosophy Capt. Samuel S. Zwahlen; Military Science THE BREWER MYTH My first term at Furman my advisor gave me Brewer for psychology sang a group of mournful looking students in a Follies act. This paraphase of the well-known Christmas tune was met by nods of agreement and anxiety-ridden signs from upperclassmen in the audience and by gasps of sheer terror from the freshmen and those presently enrolled in General Psychology. Who is this Dr. Brewer that the mere mention of his name can render fear in the heart of any Furman student? When Dr. Brewer came to Furman in 1967, psychology was a small department, mainly on the second floor of the classroom building. Through the gracious support of the faculty, administration, and students. Dr. Brewer and his colleagues nourished the department. With this support and four grants from the National Science Foundation, the psychology department is now highly respected. The John Broadus Watson Symposium which was held last year and featured such well-known speakers as James McConnell, Fred S. Keller, and B. F. Skinner, brought world wide attention to Furman University. Brewer believes that a college should demand work, and without that academic enterprise, the university should not exist. Thus he focuses on academics and is demanding, but never too demanding, especially if one follows his advice and prepares for his class with a religious fervor. Consequently, the sharing of the students' growth, in whatever aspect, is the only reward Dr. Brewer seeks. He dedicates his effort not only to teaching psychology, but also to encourage intellectual, academic, and social growth in all aspects of life. Senior psychology major Beth Davis quietly listens to Dr. Brewer's suggestions for obtaining a job after graduation in a psychology-related area. Faculty 31
