Dr. William E. Levcrcttc, Jr.; History Dr. Roy E. Lindahl; Classical Languages Dr. Richard R. Maag; Music Dr. Douglas M. MacDonald; Philosophy Dr. W. Duncan McArthur, Jr.; English VARIED HOBBIES Handling his bees as adeptly as he handles his English classes. Dr. Rudolph Bates, English professor, has many interests outside the classroom, beekeeping being one of his major enthusiasms. Many of Dr. Bates' hobbies are connected with the outdoors: gardening, camping, and yard work. Indoors, he displays an artistic bent: he plays the piano, works with stained glass, and, of course, like every other English professor, reads voraciously. He has been working on Dickens for the past five years and probably will be for at least the next five. Fortunately for his students, Dr. Bates does not require quite that degree of devotion from them in their pursuit of literature. He recommends that his students study at least two hours a night. The reasoning behind that requirement is that he feels that literature is more than just superficial reading — it is mastering and understanding the material. Thus he does not confine his classes to just lecturing; discussion and audio visual aids (movies, filmstrips) are also included. He stated, Student reactions are important in the study of literature and I make an effort to encourage them through discussion. Dr. Bates shares his students' love for vacation. He feels that they give him a chance to engage in a favorite activity of his — travel. Having traveled to both Europe and the Greek Islands, Dr. Bates would like to explore Russia next. Yet Italy heads his favorite countries list, adding that he felt sympathetic with the Italians; they know how to live. As is evident. Dr. Bates is not exclusively classroom-oriented. He, as he himself stated about Italy, knows how to live. h faculty advisor. Dr. Bates aids many students vvith the election ° ‘heir classes. 28 Faculty
