Miss Judith Ann Duffic; Library Dr. Steven D. Ealy; Political Science Dr. James C. Edwards; Philosophy Dr. Gilles O. J. Einstein; Psychology Dr. Philip L. Elliott; English A BUILDER OF PEOPLE With his goal being “to build and prepare a firm foundation for the students at Furman ' Dr. Ronald S. Barden was one of four new professors hired by the Economics and Business Administration Department in the past year. He also was the university's first accounting professor and wanted to aid in the department's expansion plan. Dr. Barden came to Furman with an extensive background in accounting. He received his B. A. in accounting from the University of North Carolina and his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Texas. He also taught at the Naval Post Graduate School in California and at Florida State University. Since Dr. Barden does not look at his students as what they are but instead as what they can become, he feels that his place is “to aid them in getting there. He tries to teach each student to develop an analytical ability, to learn the why of things rather than just the how, and to communicate orally and in writing. In addition, Dr. Barden commented that since Furman is “a special institution with an outstanding past and a bright future, he believed that with encouragement, the students here have the potential to be “the leaders of tomorrow. Thus he wanted his courses to be rigorous exercises so the classes could move farther, quicker, and with more depth than other schools. With this desire to be better than average, Dr. Barden hoped that his courses would help his students to withstand crises in the future. He is therefore, to use his own terms, “a builder of people. Dr. Borden emphasizes to his students that he is available any time after class for advice or help. Faculty 25
