Hazel Wiggins Harris, Director of Summer Session Marguerite Johnston Hayes, Director of Communications Patricia A. Hays, Licensed Practical Nurse Dennis S. Hoobler, Assistant Director of Athletics STUDENT FRIEND Total student involvement characterizes Dr. Charles Cort's work. Not only is he an advisor to both the handicapped and foreign students, he is also the Director of Student Development Services. In his own words, his world at Furman is entirely encompassed by students. His most important duty is counseling with students who have personal problems. These problems cover spiritual, family, academic, career, psychological, and social difficulties. Another duty of Cort's is the administration of various tests. He gives career inventories in conjunction with the department of career programs and personality and psychological tests. He also handles the Graduate Record Examination, the Law Scholastic Aptitude Test, and the Graduate Management Test for MBA majors. In addition, Cort's job includes the position of academic advisor to both international and handicapped students, a professorship in the Education Department, the partial responsibility of training the Residential Advisors, and the chairmanship of the Student Counseling Committee. One reason Cort has so much success with students is that he stresses they set goals, establish a set of values, and develop a self-concept. He tries not to let the distressed student become dependent upon counseling but instead become self-directed. Dr. Charles Cort spends a portion of his time weekly counseling and befriending students from his office in the dining hall. 22 I Administration
