TOP: The cool breezy days of late fall do not hinder students from taking a few moments for casual talk in the open breezoways of the buildings. BOTTOM: Even though Furman University is considered to be a southern school, snow flurries usually cover the campus at least once a winter season. FAR TOP: Summer session on the campus is the most relaxed term for most people. Maybe it's due to the longer summer evenings that benefit the fishermen. FAR BOTTOM: Early spring is the perfect time for leisurely sailing in the afternoon. 14 Opening

The holding of American hostages by irate Iranian students prompted the administration of Greenville Technical College to refuse their Iranian students enrollment for the winter term of 1980, thereby creating an opening for their deportment. The administration of Furman University invited the Iranians to enroll here. This offer gave the students a chance to continue their education, which was the reason for their being here, without being deported for political reasons beyond their control. Fortunately, Greenville Technical College rescinded its earlier ruling and the Iranians were allowed to re-enroll for the winter quarter. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, it created an international fervor. Not only was it a war-like move. Afghanistan was next door to Iran, where the hostage situation was no better. The threat of war, however, was not the only outcome of this maneuver. The possible United States' boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow became a key issue in the nation, especially affecting the young athletes who had devoted most of the past four years preparing themselves for these sporting events. Possible Olympic hopefuls at Furman continued training for competition in pre-Olympic games with hopes of still finding themselves in the 1980 Games. But their future contentions depended on further moves by the U.S.S.R., U.S.A., and other key world nations in the potentially explosive and highly diplomatic situation. Not all of Furman's questions and problems revolved around such national key events. Some very optimistic changes manifested themselves on the campus. Clearing and surveying began for the much talked-about and long-awaited football stadium on the college grounds. Part of the Arboretum was sacrificed for this project, which has now halted due to lack of funds during the 1980 recession. Two other buildings were slated to be built during the first few years of the Eighties, the Fine Arts building and the new Infirmary. Both badly-needed buildings were being looked upon as key projects for the future success of the university. As a whole, Furman University splashed into the Eighties successfully. The people did not shirk away from world affairs; when necessary, they dived into the current events enthusiastically. If puddles of problems appeared during the planning and development phases of the new buildings, the administration merely waded through them one by one and tried to obtain their original goal. So, even though the decade of the Eighties arrived at Furman without disturbing the flow of university happenings, it still set the parameters by which all upcoming future occurrences could be weighed and reckoned.
