Other nationwide events that affected life at Furman in some way included the Three Mile Island incident and the future of nuclear energy, the Iran crisis and the controversy over the former Shah of Iran and the fifty American hostages, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the prospect of a Third World War. The Three Mile Island incident brought nationwide attention to the nuclear industry. Everyone asked the question: Are we going too fast in our nuclear development without allowing time for testing and for additional safeguards? Do we need it at all? Almost every student on campus had his or her opinion about the situation. But one organization on campus, SCPIRG, took an united stand against the nuclear industry. SCPIRG handed out literature and offered help to any other supporters. Some members even attended some anti-nuke rallies so that more up-to-date information and support could be obtained. To have or not to have nuclear energy did not seem to be the whole question; the rate at which we achieved it was. Opening 11
