FOREIGN STUDIES England On Monday. September 6.1 greeted familiar Furman faces in New York’s Kennedy Airport, and together we embarked on a three-month exploration of England — and ourselves. On the beginning tour of Ireland, we evidenced the effects of the severe summer drought and began to quench our own thirsts for new sights and ideas. Somethirst-quenching activities including drinking meade in a medieval castle, enjoying the first pub party in Galway, climbing 2.000 feet of Yeats' Ben Bulben. and reading anti-war graffiti in Dublin. The rest of tour was spent in England and Scotland, stopping to see the colleges of Cambridge. York's Minster and Shambles, the Royal Mile of Edinburgh, the Lake District near Kesswick. and the Roman ruins at Bath. We gradually became used to the famous British accent and reserve, and by the time we reached Hadrian s Wall and Stonehenge, we had become professional student tourists. When we slowed down to settle in London, we were ready for organized study to help us arrange the myriad of images we had experienced. Home was the Ivanhoe Hotel and school was Birkbeck College. In the evenings, the tube” could transport us to any play, concert, pub, opera, or restaurant within minuies. However, at the end of the five-week resident study, there were still sights left unseen. After a Halloween masquerade party, we left in small groups for two weeks of independent travel in Europe. Some decided to hop-skip-and-jump across six or seven countries while others spent their days in only two or three cities. After Amsterdam's red light district and a peek at the Pope, we regrouped for a month-long Shakespeare course in Stratford-upon-Avon. Dr. John Crabtree guided us through fifteen plays and eight stage performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Frost and cold guesthouses signalled the approach of the anticipated homecoming, and on December 9. we returned to New York. Though we still had Shakespeare exams and journals to complete, our foremost thoughts centered around the successful integration of two worlds and the silent, private memories. — Annamarie Saliba 30
