Our student governments are different; our ideas of student government are similar; a new constitution will combine our governments soon! The manner of producing a Joint Constitution for Greater Furman has been of committees and sub-committees. In 1954 the first moves were made, resulting in generalized ideas gathered from constitutions of other coeducational universities. A larger committee began work later that year; divided into small sub-committees, this group worked toward specific material for our Constitution. All the reports from these smaller groups were read and discussed in the general committee meetings. The final steps were begun late in 1955: arranging a technical pattern of form and assimilating a comprehensive unit from these many reports. The Joint Constitution committee's work is slow because of its scope and not because of a lack of interest by the committee. Lively debates and discussions on almost every phase in the Constitution takes place weekly; however, this constitution committee (and those to follow) becomes aware of the need for tolerance and open-mindedness quickly. As Furman becomes Greater Furman, we of the Constitution committees desire a flexible system that will lead our student governments in upholding the honorable ideals of us all, proving that each Furman student is a person of honor ... We hope our parts in forming a Joint Constitution will find their place in the wonderful heritage of Greater Furman student life.
