Student Government at Furman works as two separate branches, one branch being for women, the other for men. The goal of each is to function in a democratic way, to uphold the Honor System, and to promote good citizenship on the campus. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Under the capable leadership of James Jordan on the Men’s Campus and Lynn Cater on the Women's Campus, student offices have run well. Bob Deaton and Dee Riles have served ably as vice-presidents, as have Frances Skelton and Brock Gordon as secretaries and Dan McGee and Emma Jean Walker as treasurers. ■ FRANCES SKELTON 16 LyNN CATER

STUDENT LEGISLATURE Better student government was the motive of the Student Legislature this year. President Jerry Monroe gave a view of the year’s work in the first meeting. Though the legislature realized the inadequacy of the old constitution, it decided to enforce the laws as they stood. One example of this was the charter issue. JERRy MONROE President The Legislature has started work on a joint constitution with the Women’s Council. As it stands, the new constitution will not be presented for ratification by the student body until next year. The student body first must vote to have a joint constitution. At present the Legislature is amending the entire men’s constitution. The student body budget was approved by the Legislature with the stipulation that the surplus fund was to be spent- only with the approval of the Legislature. Left to Right: RICHARD ARCHESI.
