Our Alma Mater Fuquay-Varina High School Fuquay School grew as a result of several smaller ones that merged into the larger one of today. In this brief history we shall see how this came about. Among the first schools in the area was one at Needmore called Oakwood School. The school was used for a packhouse and those who wanted to go to high school had to go to Cary. Another school was the Wilbon School. It was located about 1 4 mile south of Atkin’s pond. The original Wilbon School was named Norris which was later destroyed by fire. There was a Subscription School in -our town and it was just above the springs. Squire Ballentine taught there. There was also another Subscription or Private School about 3 4 miles North¬ west of Fuquay and was taught by Haddie Jones. The school which Squire Ballentine taught in was a one room house. The first public school was started about 1880. It was a one room house about 2 miles Northwest of Fuquay. There was also a second public school directed by Mr. Fred T. Barbee. In 1881, a school was operated in the area of our present Teacherage. It was a private school and had about 20 pupils. A school at Cardenas was begun in 1904 called Cardenas Public School. The first term began in 1910. This school consolidated with Fuquay Springs in 1918. All of the schools around the area finally merged to form the one Fuquay School. The schools of Willow Springs and Holly Springs remained in the Elementary Grade level and are still operating today. The Elementary Building of Fuquay was built in 1918 and many said that it would never be filled. The Old High School Building was built in 1927 and the “Ag. Building” was also in use. The Home Ec. Department was also in use. The present High School Building was built in the years 1957 and 1958. In conclusion, the town and the kind of educational facilities that it provides is a direct reflection on the people of the com¬ munity. Fuquay had a history that was directly influenced by the schools and the education that they provided. 13
