Our Comunity Fuquay - Varina This is a story about our town and the area around it. Fuquay was settled in 1852 by Mr. Stephen Fuquay from Virginia. He bought 1000 acres of land from the Sippi Haw Indians for 50i per acre. The name Sippi Haw comes from the name of the Indian tribe that resided here before Mr. Fuquay. Our town land ' was once under the control of the King of England. Fuquay has grown from the one general store to the industrious town of today. Five Points used to be a stop-over for the stage coach from Raleigh to Fayetteville. It was on the map before the Civil War. Willow Springs was settled in 1898. The first house there was owned by a colored lady. The name came from the Old Willow Springs Church on Hill Top. The Panther Branch Township was settled about 1810. It is now called Panther Lake Community. The name came from the legend that a man was supposed to have killed a panther at a near-by stream. Needmore was settled in 1892 by three families; the Cottons, the Maynards, and the Hortons. The name of “Needmore” came from the fact that more families were needed to populate the area. Wilbon was first called Duketon” because the Dukes came to start a mill. Later, Mr. S.G. Wilbon gave it the name of today. By viewing the history of our community, we find that the facts are only as good as the people themselves. We are proud of Fuquay. 11

Fuquay is not a tremendous town in size but it continues to grow yearly be¬ cause of the increase in business, the love and desire found here make it a better place to live in, and it is a place for one to find a satisfactory surrounding. Varina has its own post office but has now become a part of Fuquay Springs or now known as Fuquay-Varina. 10
