9 wicihal Mr. I. P. Davis, Jr., Principal In the Book of Proverbs we find the following passages: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” And from the 127th Psalm: “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” A sound mind, a sound body, a healthy spiritual, moral and social attitude, and a stable emotional system - these are essential characteristics of a worthy and successful person - and lead to a happier life. These are the fundamental traits we who are responsible for your training and development here at Fuquay Springs High School are vitally concerned with when we strive to guide and help you in fulfilling your total development and growth in preparation for entering the world you will encounter on leaving school here. You are surrounded by the greatest oppor¬ tunities youth has been graced with in the history of mankind; but you are also enveloped by the greatest problems youth has ever been plagued with. It is tremendously important that during your time here in school you be afforded opportunities and experiences to enable you to make critical evaluations and wise judgments - for each decision you make is tending to move you either toward the greater opportunities of life or toward the greater problems. The late President John F. Kennedy said: “Education is both the foundation and unifying force of our democratic way of life ... it is the highest expressio n of achievement in our society” - so take the fullest possible advantage of your time in school, and the opportunities it provides for you. Always remember that achievement is the product of inspiration, preparation, diligence and determination. Success is never final, and failure never fatal. There are many apparent defeats that are more triumphant than apparent victories - where greater learing and growth result from these apparent defeats, and sounder character traits are developed. 8
