Life’s fullest reward is achieved only when we give ourselves to something far more precious than life. Thus in dying, Tommie gave us the legacy of his life. Let us live for him as well as ourselves ... 4 mourning lidJvty cwneUi in five “O Lord, let us not live to be useless.” —John Wesley Mr. Donald Cotton We, the Senior Class of 1966, do proudly dedicate our annual to a person of high moral integrity and one whose spirit and enthusiasm for life flows over into everything which is attempted. The life of this teacher has been an influence on many of us. To you, Mr. Donald Cotton, goes a token of our esteem through this annual dedication. 5 6 MR MRS MRS MISS MISS MRS MISS MRS MRS MRS MRS hi i n COTTON ELLINGTON THOMAS ENNIS CARROLL AVERETT WILLIAMSON FREEMAN JOHNSTON COUNCIL HADD OCK S ST MATH BU ENG GN SCI BUS ENG PHY CHEF MATH FR BIO NG ENG AND AND H AND S ST ENG AG AG D E H EC EIGHTH BE P F| I SEVENTH • • « , - ' • « v, ■ ' 4 ' N S . • ? |||jfs; ■: t • « ■ i m 4 v ' U luff ' . : • :v |j-. Davis, Jr., Principal In the Book of Proverbs we find the following passages: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” And from the 127th Psalm: “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” A sound mind, a sound body, a healthy spiritual, moral and social attitude, and a stable emotional system - these are essential characteristics of a worthy and successful person - and lead to a happier life. These are the fundamental traits we who are responsible for your training and development here at Fuquay Springs High School are vitally concerned with when we strive to guide and help you in fulfilling your total development and growth in preparation for entering the world you will encounter on leaving school here. You are surrounded by the greatest oppor¬ tunities youth has been graced with in the history of mankind; but you are also enveloped by the greatest problems youth has ever been plagued with. It is tremendously important that during your time here in school you be afforded opportunities and experiences to enable you to make critical evaluations and wise judgments - for each decision you make is tending to move you either toward the greater opportunities of life or toward the greater problems. The late President John F. Kennedy said: “Education is both the foundation and unifying force of our democratic way of life ... it is the highest expressio n of achievement in our society” - so take the fullest possible advantage of your time in school, and the opportunities it provides for you. Always remember that achievement is the product of inspiration, preparation, diligence and determination. Success is never final, and failure never fatal. There are many apparent defeats that are more triumphant than apparent victories - where greater learing and growth result from these apparent defeats, and sounder character traits are developed. 8 9 J cA icJ, SHoa id Charles W. Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim The sullen streams had no fears for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. “Old man,” said a fellow pilgram near, “You are wasting strength with building here. Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way. You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you a bridge at the eventide?” The builder lifted his old, gray head. “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him. Through the years as we remember All the friends we’ve known, From that first day in September How our dreams have grown.
