MR. E. N. FARNELL Principal Someone has said that life deals with man, in such a manner that oftentimes he feels as if he were in a cage; that he cannot escape from the demands, restriction and conformity of society and life Perhaps you have had this feeling as a child, as a student, or a young adult seeking your proper place in society. The story is told that some monkeys were taken to a zoo and placed in a cage with no top. They were all alike except that two of them could fly. One day, as they were sitting in the sun, one of them said, “I wish we could get out of here.” “Then why don’t we fly out,” said the other; whereupon they flew away. The men at the zoo observed them flying away and one said, “If we had put them in a cage with a top on it, we would have had a good thing here at the zoo.” Have you looked recently to see if there is a top on your cage? Should you sit idly by and accept being caged, you’ll never develop to your potential as a citizen in a democratic society nor find your place as “one made in the image of God.” The world waiting to greet you is divided into two idological camps. One, the Communists, is attempting to cage mankind. They would place a top on your cage and destroy God’s Image. The other, Democracy, recognizes the dignity of the individual and would free man from his cage. It will give you the freedom to glorify God ' s Image. You are fortunate that the latter is your heritage and that you have the privilege of preserving this heritage through hard work, vigilance, and truth. James Russell Lowell says: “Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide; In the strife of Truth and Falsehood, for the good or evil side.” 18
