SENIOR SNAPS Pape Nineteen Senior (Ohms History Let us turn back to the year nineteen forty-five, when our enthusiasm for high school was at its peak. As bewildered Freshmen it took sometime to adjust ourselves to high school routine. Little did we realize then what barriers lay in store for us be¬ fore we were to reach that long awaited goal of seniority. The highlight of this year was Civics under Miss Litaker. Our homeroom teach¬ ers were Miss Lydia Beavers and Mrs. W. A. Runnion. Another year gave us the pride of saying we were sophomores and convinced us that there was still much to learn. Biology under Mrs. Runnion confirmed this fact. By the time our Junior year rolled around all of us were entering whole-heartedly into the activities of the school. Roy B. Talley was elected class president. Our football team was undefeated and untied. The Student Council was organized this year and from our class Joe Chappell was elected vice-president. Our Junior play, “He Could¬ n’t Marry Five, was a great success. The funds obtained from the play were used to give our Junior-Senior Banquet and dance. A day to be remembered was Career Day sponsored by the Civitan Club of Raleigh. Those attending Girl’s State were Mary Royal Callis, Mary Frances Haddock, Patrica Prince, Shirley Ragan, Marie Rogers and Bar¬ bara Ann Tilley. At last came our Senior year with only a few months until we have accomplished our goal. For our homeroom teachers we had two of the very best, Miss Lucy Perkin- son and Mrs. Elizabeth Stack. Clarence Rollins was elected president of the class. Again our football team was a powerhouse. Barbara Ann Tilley was president of the Student Council, and our representatives were Grace Jones, Peggy Walker, Phillip Ransdell, and Dale Tilley. For the first time since nineteen forty-five we published a school paper, Hi-Times. From our class Linda Blalock, Clarence Rollins, Barbara Dones, Olivia Sherian, and Mary Frances Haddock were on the staff. The Book Club was organized this year, and the Senior officers were Dale Tilley, vice-president; Shirley Ragan, sec¬ retary-treasurer. A highlight of the year was our Thanksgiving Party at Sunset Lake. Our new ball park was completed in time for the football season. Dale Tilley was the capable manager of our football team. The school cafeteria equipped with new furniture was finished in November. Cheerleaders from our class this year were Grace Averette, Alma Hill, Sara Ellen Fish, and Ann Lanier. As we leave the school and our fellow students, each of us thinks back over the years just passed. Many who started with us as Freshmen have moved away or drop¬ ped by the wayside. We have chosen our courses, played, worked, and practiced as a great unit; but now we are on the threshold of individualism. The doors of colleges and business firms are opening to us, and we are to enter them on our merit. And thus, Fuquay High, the class of nineteen forty-nine bids you “Farewell.” Page Twenty Left to right: Mary Rose Womble, Reporter; Sam Holloway, President; William Stephenson, Treasurer; Stewart Adcock, Vice-President; Theresa Blalock, Secretary. Pa ye Forty-One GREENBRIAR STAFF Well students, here is your much awaited annual, the 1949 Greenbriar. After weeks of confusion, running around, writing and rewriting, and honest-to-goodness hard work, we, the annual staff, have come through with a book which we hope every Fuquay Springs school pupil is as proud of as we are; we, who have earnestly devoted our time and efforts in making this a much cherished record. It is hardly possible for us to thank everyone who has given their aid in produc¬ ing this book, but we, in mentioning a few, would like to express our deepest grati¬ tude to Mr. W. E. Fleming, who has put at our disposal his office and facilities; to the merchants of Fuquay, Varina, and Willow Springs for their wholehearted cooperation in making our annual possible through their advertising; to all the elementary and high school teachers; and to Dr. and Mrs. A. G. Crumpler, who graciously permitted their home to be used in photographing our superlatives. Special praise is given to our sponsor, Mrs. Paul N. Stack, for instilling in us the initiative to go forward in the work on our yearbook. Mrs. Stack was always will¬ ing to give of her time and advice to assist us through our difficulties. Through the persistent work of Marie and her staff, she was able to secure practi¬ cally all the advertisements necessary within our community. Billy, being business manager, has been constantly worried over the problem of keeping up with his “little box,” which served as a bank and file in condensed form. Our staff photographer, Glenn Poe, has done and excellent job in making our snapshot sections a success. As the editor-in-chief, Bobby had the difficult task of compiling the book and seeing that the necessary work was done. Because of his fine editorialship the book has been successfully completed. All in all, working on it was a lot of fun, and hoping you are enjoying it and will for many years to come, we proudly present—THE 1949 GREENBRIAR. The Student Council, under the splendid leadership of Mr. W. E. Fleming, feels that it has accomplished several worthwhile things this year. Among these are: better attendance pro¬ gram in which every grade in school having a ninety five or above per cent of attendance was to be given a party at the end of the year; safety and sanitary program whose work was to put up new school road signs, assign patrols to all school buses and keep the yards and water fountains clean; and publishing of the school paper Hi Times which presented its first issue on November 25, 1948. The Student Council also operated the concession stand at the basketball games. Barbara Ann Tilley Anne Clark . Ralph Ashwbrth .... Daphne Adams . Portia Mitchell . . President .... Vice President . The Beta Club is a national honorary organization which recognizes outstanding scholarship The members, on the recommendation of the faculty, are selected on the basis of achievement, character, and leadership. The objective of the Beta Club is to encourage scholarship, promote character and ideals, and maintain a high quality of leadership among the students. The officers elected for this year were the following; Shirley Ragan, president; Anne Clark, vice-president; Linda Blalock, secretary; Phillip Ransdell, treasurer; Bobby Thomas, reporter. There is an annual initiation of the new members by the old, causing many humorous situations. Each year the Beta Club adopts a project for the betterment of the school. In 1948, the club presented to the school a speaker’s stand and obtained letters for the stage curtain. This year the club would like to give an electric scoring board for the gymnasium. The annual convention, to which all the members of the Beta Clubs in the state may attend, was held this spring at the Sir Walter Hotel in Raleigh. Many of our members attended the two-day convention and enjoyed it very much. Club, being one of the largest clubs in school, has been very active the past year under the capable leadership of Mr. F. L. Hunt. Among its accomplish¬ ments were: securing eight beef calves to fatten for the annual fat stock show, prun¬ ing shrubbery in the community, and helping to erect the new bleachers in the gymna¬ sium. Two of the club’s outstanding members are Maurice Adcock and Joe Chappell. Maurice produced the most corn of any boy in the community with a yield of 105 bushels per acre. Joe, having had the best Supervised Practice Farming Program in the district, won as his prize an expense paid trip to the National F. F. A. Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Included in their social activities were the Father-Son, Mother-Daughter Banquet given in cooperation with the F. H. A. Club, and a barbecue supper attended by fifty of the boys who produced sixty-two bushels of corn per acre or more. The final score was 18-0 in favor of Oxford and this was a heartbreaker for the Falcons as they had been undefeated and untied in their previous season’s games. At their next game, which was with Angier on our home field, our new stadium was dedi¬ cated. The Falcons gained their first victory with an overwhelming score of 49-0. Garner was next on the Falcons’ list for defeat when the Fuquay eleven spanked them 28-0. Journeying to Rich Square the next Friday, Fuquay found an easy opponent. The Falcons tallied fifty-three points to Rich Square’s none. Playing a defensive game with Raleigh the next Friday, Fuquay scored twice and slated another victory with a score of 13-0. Another easy victory came for the Falcons the following week when they stomped Wendell 64-0. With six wins and only one loss, Fuquay was still seeking another victory and found it with Erwin by a score of 19-0. Playing La Grange a week later, on a very disagreeable day, Fuquay met its second defeat of the season, when La Grange scored twenty-five points, to the Falcons ' thirteen. On Thanksgiving Day, Fuquay wound up its football season by defeating Cathedral Latin 25-0. The Falcons, in their successful season, scored 276 points against only 50 by their oppo¬ nents. The outstanding linesmen for the Fuquay team this year were the following: Watson Ad¬ cock, Jack Guthrie, Leon Pearce, Winstead Dove, Joe Chappell, Floyd Ragsdale, Clarence Rol¬ lins, Ralph Smith, F. D. Ragan, and J. K. Sherron. The outstanding backs were Herbert Dickens, Jack Faucette, Billy Joe Dickens, Tommy Keith, Charles F. Jones, Donald Wagstaff, Edward Lee Wilson, and Ben Burchette.
