Srutnr (ElasH IltHtnry Green Freshmen? That is exactly what we were when we entered Fuquay High School in 1944, when tires weren’t just a souvenir. The highlight of this year was Civics under Miss Litaker. The year was gone before we realized it, but it revealed to us a promising future. The next year, 1945, we felt we had attained great dignity because we rose to the rank of Sophomore—which being translated means “wise fool.” This year the P.T.A. sponsored a popularity contest which was won by one of our members, Betty Joyce Talley. In ’46 we began to take part in various activities. The Andrew Sisters—Charles Ashworth, Van Wagstaff, and Gerald Smith—highlighted the Variety Show which was sponsored by the Juniors under Mrs. Rollins to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. Peggy Jeffries from our class won the Popularity Contest. For class officers we elected Charles Ashworth, president, Elvin Caviness, vice-president, Bonnie Lee, secretary, and Joyce Adcock, treasurer. Although our junior year was very eventful, the senior year was even more so. The president this year was Marvin Dickens. For the first time since 1928 we had a high-school annual. Our football team was undefeated. The Variety Show directed by Betty Talley, Willie Lee Hester, and Bonnie Lee and sponsored by Mrs. Stack and Mrs. Peck, was a great success. The outstanding performers from our class were Ronald Tilley, master of ceremonies; Willie Lee Hester, impersonator; Dewey Rowland, (“blues” singer); the Andrew Sisters—Charles Ashworth, Dale Tilley, and Gerald Smith; the Ink Spots—Louise Pearce, Joyce Adcock, Ethel Fish, and Willie Belle Cates; the chorus girls—Lacy Walters, E. S. Wilson, Marvin Dickens, Douglas Curl, Willie Wilkes, and LeRoy Veasy; and Carmen Mirandar, Mildred Sasse. The winner of the Popularity Contest this year was Joyce Adcock. Charles “Blackie” Jones was the heartthrob of all girls. Charles “Red” “Mortimer” Jones was the capable manager of our basketball team. Cheerleaders from our class this year were Charles Ashworth, head cheerleader, and Mildred Sasse, assistant. The Student Council was introduced this year and from our class Bonnie Lee was elected president; Edna Ferrell, treasurer; Clara Garrett, Betty Jane Sherron, Charles “Blackie” Jones and Lacy Walters our representatives. Our senior play, directed by Miss Perkinson, was a great success. It is with fond memories that we leave our beloved school where we have spent the four happiest years of our lives. Page Nineteen
