The Vespa 1970-1971 Fulton High School Fulton, Missouri Volume XX4 2 Taking a Look at Ourselves We have to look at ourselves, and so We want to be fit for ourselves to know, We want to be able, as days go by, Always to look ourselves straight in the eye; We don’t want to stand, with the setting sun And hate ourselves for things we’ve done. We don’t want to keep on a closet shelf A lot of secrets about ourselves, And fool ourself, as we come and go, Into thinking that nobody else will know The kind of men we really are; We don’t want to dress up ourselves in sham. We want to go out with our heads erect, We want to deserve all men’s respect; But here in the struggle for fame and self We want to be able to like ourselves. We don’t want to look at ourselves and know That we bluster and bluff an empty show. We can never hide ourselves from ourself; We see what others may never see; We know what others may never know, We never can fool ourself, and so, Whatever happens, we want to be Self-respecting and conscience free. The Junior class began the year with two weeks of building a float for the Home- coming parade. The float, Hornet In- vasion was awarded second prize. The class also placed second in Harvest King and Queen competition. In November, the class presented The Jury Room , directed by Mrs. Cathy Dean and Nancy Conner. To raise money, a dance was planned with the theme I'll Be There. The dance was cancelled because the band failed to arrive. A successful Prom added final touches to the year. Getting lined up. When you part from your friend, you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friend- ship save the deepening of the spirit. For love that seeks aught but the dis- closure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught. And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness. And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. by Kahlil Gibran 122 ADVERTISEMENTS COURTESY OF THESE COUNTY OFFICIALS Glenn Massey, Recorder Red Carrington, County Clerk Paul Murphy, County Court Judge Herring, County Court Judge Blair, County Court Glenn R.
