It has now become history but its students are not leaving empty handed for they have taken with them knowledge and a better understanding of themselves and their world. DEDICA TION Mrs. Lottie Ruth Tate Ten years ago this fall she joined the faculty of Fulton High School as a classroom teacher. During the decade she has been a part of this system her sincerity, devotion, promptness, zest for living, and her deep desire to help each and every student learn, endears her to all who have had the privilege of studying biology and English I with her. For them, her ready encouragement and wise guidance have helped unlock the doors of wisdom and led them to a better understanding. She has served as class sponsor at several levels and has been one of the advisers of the Mathematics and Science Club since its organization. The Vespa staff is pleased to dedicate the 1963 Vespa to--Mrs. Lottie Ruth Tate. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRA TION ADMINIS L. E. Lewis, Superintendent of Schools SUPERINTENDENT L. E. LEWIS L. E. Lewis became Superintendent of the Fulton Public Schools July 1, 1962. Born at Advance, Missouri, he received his elementary and secondary education at Bloomfield. He holds the B.S. and Masters degrees from the Uni- versity of Missouri. Mr. Lewis spent three years in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific area where he was on a sub-chaser which was converted into a mine sweeper. His experience in the educational profession began at Bolivar where he taught social studies and public speaking. He was Superintendent of Schools at Paris then became Director of Admissions at Christian College, Columbia, before assuming the position in Fulton. His wife is the former Miss Betty Pettigrew of St. James. They have two children, Sonya, eight and Doug, three. Schaper became principal of Fulton High School Oren Liley assumed the position of assistant principalship August I, 1959. at FHS in the fall of 1961. Mr. Schaper is a native of Versailles, Missouri and received his elementary and high school education in its schools. He is a graduate of West Point and holds the Masters degree from the University of Missouri in School Administration. He has been principal of schools at Dexter and superintendent of Parna Schools. Mr. Liley is a graduate of Southeast State College, Cape Girardeau and his graduate work was done at the University of Missouri. He has taught science in schools of Southeast Missouri and at William Woods College. In addition to administrative work he directs the visual education program. This marks the first year for wrestling as an interscholastic sport at FHS. The boys were extremely proud of their new uniforms. Highlighting the season for the FHS squad was the taking of the NEMOConference meet in Moberly. Jim Dye has been an outstanding scorer and received an individual trophy as high point man in NEMO meet. He participated in pole vaulting, broad jump, 100 yard dash and anchored the 880 relay team Jeff Wallace and Anson Robinson brought home firsts in the event. Jeff was first in discus and Anson won the 100 yard dash. Terry Gowin won the mile race at Mo- berly and has been a consistent winner throughout the season. Hornets' Relay Team set a fine record, too. They have broken their own top record, and have rated as number one placers in most entries. Hornet Relay Team--Anson Robinson, William Galbreath, Larry Dudley, and Jim Dye. TENNIS TEAM FRONT ROW--Tom Fraser, Larry Bosch, William Wei, Jerry Kennett, Tom Mertens, and John Rootes. Coach Quest is well pleased with the turnout and feels a splendid team will shape up for intra- scholastic action next year. 'V ?yJ GOLF TEAM Fulton High golf team has entered several teams engaged in a few meets during the brief season. GOLF TEAM--David Burre, Mickey Fleming, Joe Johnston, Bruce Chirnside, Allan Sheets, Chuck Souther, David Bratton and Coach Bill Schramm. Fleming and Chirnside are the only seniors on the squad. 21 A Sports rate high among students at FHS. Basketball time enriches the winter days and brings the annual Fulton Invitational Tournament. ORGANIZA tions VESPA STAFF PUBLICA LIONS Publications has for its major projects during the year the editing of the yearbook and publishing Hi- Life, the school newspaper once each month. The annual is in the 17th year of production while Hi-Life observed its 40th anniversary of publishing this year. All students enrolled in French as well as those who have previously had the courses are eligible for membership. Dr. L. C. Dahl was speaker at the annual spring banquet held in typical French style. Mrs. Bill Reed is the club sponsor. Mr. Schaper and Mr. Liley observe French reproductions hanging in FHS Le Louvre as Mrs. Reed points out some of the special features. One of the club projects the creation of a series of exhibits in the French class room during the year. Probably the most inter- esting ones was the corner which was dressed to repre- sent a setting akin to the famous French Le Louvre. D. D. Any stu- dent taking Latin or any, who has taken it is eligible for membership. The club meets at night one time each quarter. One of the most outstanding ones is the Latin ban- quet. On that evening club members and guests don Roman togas and for a night enjoy the life of early Roman days. Phil Glenn is president of the local chapter. Diane Burre participates in a Roman skit. Deri Jameson, Nick Cave, and Blake Danuser appear in the foreground with a motled Roman crowd consisting of Roman nobles, citizens and slaves surrounding them.
