The first years of the voyage were by no means easy sailing for Professor Hopkins and his crew of 250 eager students. The classrooms were small and poorly equipped, but nevertheless the students got a Cfairj knowledge of the mysteries of English, History, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It seems strange that Fulton then could boast of no graduating class when this year she proudly sends forth IOS wise and learned scholars. The next year the Good Ship anchored at a much better port, located on VVhitehall. She could now boast of a Senior Class of five girls. This number was increased the next year fIQI8D to I2 graduates, 5 boys and 7 girls. During this time Prof. Guy A. Moore served as captain. As the crew was multiplying rapidly, each year containing more and more seekers of knowledge, she gradually sought a firmer harbor. She finally anchored at the present harbor on Washington Street in the splendid modern building called Fulton High, with her much loved and admired Mr. Dykes in command. Through her years of rapid growth, our school has been faithfully backed by the Parent-Teacher Association. This worthy body can never be repaid for its splendid co-operation. The R. O. T. C. has always ranked among the highest in the city and state, running first placemany times in both company and individual drills. A part of this work was the Girls' Military unit of '25-'26, Needless to say our girls at- tracted much attention as they drilled in their red pleated skirts, white blouses and red caps. Fulton has won even more than her share in various state contests in athletics and in scholarship, the office now with a great pride displaying the cups which have been won on different occasions. While all of the students were busy with their scholastic work, they were also organizing and making up many clubs, Dramatic, Hi-Y, Girl Reserves, French, Spanish and Home Economics. An annual of the best quality has been published for many years by the students with the aid of the able faculty. Fulton has al- ways had her athletic teams which have developed in her a fine spirit of life and vigor. After all the main aim of a school is to send forth ambitious, capable and intelligent boys and girls. Fulton has succeeded in this, for reports from colleges have numbered our students among the first. Not only does Fulton boast of a splendid faculty but four of her teachers are her own graduates, West, Taylor, Hudson and Wells. Fulton's history will never be complete without mentioning Bob, our faith- ful janitor. Bob is always ready with a happy smile to greet you, and he performs his tasks with a willingness that wins the admiration of all. And so Fulton High pushes forward, giving her best to her pupils, winning fame for herself through their success and doing her best to make Atlanta the city of cities, Georgia the State of States and the United States the Nation of Nations, FRANCES SMITH, ,3o. The upper-classmen teased us and directed us to wrong classrooms until we felt very little again. We were divided into classes: A-I, A-2, AQQ3, A-4, A-5, A-6, A-7, A-S, A-9 A-Io, A-11, A-12. After becoming better acquainted with the members of the faculty we began to feel more at home. We made good marks on our report cards, and many Freshies,' were on the honor roll. Then we were Sophomores! Ah! How thrilling it was for us to be above the first-graders! Donlt think for a moment that we didn't use the oppor- tunity to help the Freshmen! That year we were assigned to only eight classes: B-I, B-2, B-3, B-4, B-5, B-6, B-7, and.B-8. We were beginning to learn how to debate by this time, and the clubs interested us more. A large number of the girls joined the Home Economics Club and the Girl Reserves, and the boys learned to drill. juniors! At last we could be called upper-classmen and be respected as we deserved. VVe had only five classes then: C-I, C-2, C-3, C-4, and C-5. To be a class important enough to elect officers to lead us! To be allowed to wear class rings! To debate in the auditorium! It was unbelievable that we had become such great scholars. Now we were really interested in all school activities -the Dramatic Club, 'Girl Reserves, Home Economics Club, Joseph E. Brown Literary and Debating Society, and Military. The dance which we gave in honorl of the Seniors was a big success, and we looked forward to a dance in our honor next year. At last we are dignified Seniors, almost at the end of our high school careers. Now we shall be honored, looked up to by the lower classes, and perhaps noticed as persons by our faculty. NVe are allowed a little more freedom, and feel really grown since we are to graduate soon. We have only four Senior Classes, D-I, D-2, D-3, D-4, but they make up in quality for the small number of classes. The number of seniors is greater than Fulton has ever known and we are truly proud of the record we have made at dear old Fulton! VVe sincerely hope that the classes which follow us may make as great a success of their work as we have made. s MARY MCEWEN, '3o. Page Thirty-one Tv IW I' I u. OfR+fU uflrna Jlfater Fulton! Fulton! J F f Q af R af if zmior fbkiory We, the present members of the Junior Class, are the remnants of that mot- ley assemblage of lowly Freshmen who, with an air of bewildered surprise, were ushered into the spacious auditorium of our beloved school on a bright morning in September, 1927. At that embryonic period of our high school life, it was difficult for us to realize the hugeness of the task before us, that of upholding the honor, dignity, and traditions of Fulton High School, as one of its ever advancing classes. How- ever, as we stand on the threshold of our Senior year and look back over the three preceding years, we believe we can truthfully say that we have made a splendid record-one which we challenge the Sophomore class to better. At the beginning of our Freshman year, having been accustomed to the sim- pler methods of grammar school, we were somewhat at a loss in our studies. VVe soon, however, contracted the highly contagious Fulton S pirit and surprised the dubious faculty with a heavy percentage on the honor roll. By the end of the year we had proved ourselves at least willing to learn. ' It was during our Sophomore year, though, that we really began to extend ourselves. Several Sophomores brought honor upon old Fulton by winning various prizes in debating, essays, etc. The Sophomore debate was praised by both faculty and students. We are able to say with pride that a Sophomore was captain of the football team and that several stars on both diamond and grid- iron were members of our class. We entered our Junior year with the determination to do everything pos- sible to help the Seniors feel that they had the support of the entire student body in making the class of 1930 the most successful ever graduated from Fulton. We are also endeavoring to make the Junior-Senior Dance a gala affair so that thei Seniors may have nothing but good impressions of the class of 1931. It is with mixed emotions that we anticipate our Senior year. We are, of course, delighted over the prospect of being Seniors, but the knowledge that many of our friends will graduate with the class of 1930, and that we shall be loaded with the full burden of responsibility, causes us to assume a somber expression. After all, maybe this is what makes the Senior dignified. JoE WRIGHT, '3I. Page Sizvtyrone 'Wd fb l I 1'-N' Football The candidates for the football team assembled at the school the first week in September, 1929. Coach Hammack put the boys to work promptly, and, after several days of practice, ordered uni- forms for the following: C. A. Moore, centerg f'R0sie Hightower, BreechesU Hodges, and Joe Wright, guards: Bob Nation, Goofy Simonton, Lester Bounds, Leon Knopf, Luther Langly, tackles, Aubrey Smith, Pop Lindsey, Earl Carpenter, Phil Fahrney, Ben Barron, ends, Shorty Roberts, Chris Conyers, quartersg Frank R00ks, Peck Norton, Tom Clonts, Jack Ethridge, Jimmie Arthur, halfbacksg Jack Harrison, Harvey Plaster, fullbackg, The IJOYS Worked hard and there WHS keefl competition for the first eleven, which was finally C0mD0SCd Of M00fe, CCUTCYS Highf0WC1', H0dgCs, guards, Nation, Simonton, tackles, Smith, Lindsey, endsg Roberts, quarter, Rooks, Clonts, halves: H21rfiSOH, fU11- The firstugame was against Grifhn, and ended in a tie. , In the next game, Fulton went down before a hard Charging Russell team, on a muddy field. Next came Newnan Hi, the boys played their first real football. However, the game ended up, 13-0 for Newnan. Although Fulton outgained Newnan, we could not score. Against Tech Hi, the experience and weight of the Smithies pulled the score in their favor, but Fulton gained experience. The Decatur game ended in a free for all, the game never being finished. At Marietta, it was Fulton's Day. The entire R. O. T. C. unit, and most of the student body moved up to Marietta via special street cars and automobiles to see their boys win a 20-7 victory. With over 600 rooters present, with the band, and Shorty Roberts, Jack Harrison and Thomas Clonts on rampage, Fulton could not be denied. Then came the Athens game, on the muddy old Sanford Field. Fulton received the first kick off, and marched it eighty yards, only to lose it in the shadow of the Athens goal. The line was charging hard with probably a slight edge on their heavier opponents. The experience and weight of the Athens boys won for them a 13-0 victory, despite a 70-yard run by Roberts. The game ended with Fulton knocking at Athens' door by completion of three forward passes by Roberts, Harrison and Lindsey. At Cartersville, the boys played the best game of the year in a driving rain only to lose 6-0. Roberts and Harri- son were both loose at one time or another, but failed to score. Although the boys did not put a great many games in the won column, they gained lots of experience. We areexpecting to hear from some of these boys in later years. Some of them have and will put out the stuff that it takes to make college football players. ' Pop LINDSEY, '30, l I foyf' fazfket-YM!! , Coach McIlwain's call for basket-ball candidates was answered by about thirty boys. There were a great many new boys from the class teams. The letter men that returned were as fol- lows: Brown, Lindsey, Rob'erts, guardsg Ransbothan, Conyers, Harrison, forwards. The addi- tion of Stephenson, Shelly a11d Moore proved to be a great help. After a few weeks of training we played our first prep game with Russell High. It was a splendid game, ending in Fulton's favor by a 2-point margin. Clarkston came next and was also defeated by our team. 1 VVe carried out our good work until we met the strong Boys High team on their court where we met defeat, SI to 16. The following game versus Tech High was also lost 32 to I5, in spite of the fact that the boys fought gallantly. After these two games a few changes were made and the team came into its own again. The next game was in Griffin, where the boys played their very best, making a score of 31 to 25 in dear old Fulton's favor. This was the first time that Griffin's basket-ball team had had to bow to Fulton's team. A game in Rome did not end so successfully, although the boys did their level best. Marietta came to Fulton's court only to be defeated by a score of 34 to 24. Ful- ton also had to accept defeat at the hands of Canton on Canton's court. Another game against Boys High ended in a score of 34 to 25 in favor of Boys High. Mr. McIlwain gave us an inspiring talk just before this game and Boys High found us rather difficult to check. All these games strengthened the team for the prep league tournament. This proved rather fatal to our boys. A week later the team went to Macon for the G. I. A. A. tournament. Here again the boys met defeat at the hands of Lanier High. A great deal of credit is due to the coach for his work in producing a stronger team than our former ones. It would be hard to select the outstanding players since the whole team put forth all they had and each was an excellent player. With the players returning and the subs that will be back, a good team can be expected for next year. SHoR'rv RoBER'rs. Qzrlf' Burke!-Bal The championship winning girls' basket-ball team of 1930 won a cup for old Fulton for the first time since 1924. Coach Hudson put out a fighting team this season. In spite of a con- tinuous line of discouraging defeats at first the team kept up its fine spirit and came out victorious at the end of the season. Our memorable victory over the strong Chamblee quintet for the first time in several years seemed to be a turning point in our luck. The Fulton girls worked their way to the finals in a tournament, sponsored by the Y. W. C. A. and the Girl Reserves, by defeating North Avenue 30 to 5, Decatur having been eliminated in the preliminaries. We were to meet the strong and victorious Girls High team in the finals. The two teams lined up and the battle began. The score was eight and eight at the half and Both teams were fighting for victory. Each team held' the other and neither scored the third quarter. The cup was balanced between the two teams tilting from side to side. The fourth quarter started off like the third, but suddenly Morris shot one point. We were ahead! Our guards were determined not to let the enemy shoot. The ball was under the shadow of Girls Highfs goal. A Girls AHigh girl had the ball. She shot! It went in! The score was ten to nine in their favor. There were three-quarters of a minute to play. They tipped. Girls High had the ball. The whistle was in the time-keeper's mouth. Suddenly one of our guards got the ball. She passed to Morris. Morris passed to Moore. She shot! And it went in! The game was over and we had won with a score of II to IO. Much credit is due our coach, Miss Hudson. The team was very inexperienced, with only Irma Young and Evelyn Morris back from last year's varsity. But due to her untiring efforts, she soon had the team in shape with its team work running smoothly. The varsity consisted of Irma Young and Martha Moore at forward, Captain Evelyn Morris at center, and Nellie Joe Hitt and Catherine Porter at guard. Our ever-ready subs were Blanche Reeves, Rachel Hamby, Frances Smith, Sarah Cook and Sara Mitchell. Next year's prospects are quite promising. All the old varsity will be back except Captain Morris and Catherine Porter, and most of the subs will be back. Coach Hudson hopes to have a fine team next year. To do this she needs your support whether you are a basket-ball player or a rooter.
