Class Poem Four years ago you were Freshmen, Four years you've struggled here To lay the foundation of a life, But yet the vision is not clear. Graduation steals upon you, The future lies before you, Resolve, attempt, achieve, The world and all is for you. Would you, that your feet imprint Life's eternal sands? Why not? Your future lies In your own spotless hands. Shoot your arrow straight and true At a goal above the sky, And your mark will surely be A goal almost as high. -LESTER COLLUM, ' 2 9. ,igm ...,,,, , .........., ,-E ,.... ,, my ll 9 Z 9 FULTCNFCRU History of the Senior Class mm OMETHING like four years ago we were Freshmen, as green as a Freshman class ever was. In September, 1925, we assembled in the old building on the corner of Trinity Avenue and Whitehall Street. Before we had time to collect our wits our teachers marched us off to the Trinity Avenue Methodist Church, Where Mr. Dykes, our principal, explained the different courses to us. The following Monday, when our one large class was divided into nine sections, we began the first year of our high school course in earnest. Although we were handicapped by an out-of-date, poorly equipped build- ing, we enjoyed our lirst year as high school students. The real joy came when we entered the new building. We proudly boast that we were the first Fresh- men to enter the new building. By the time we became Sophomores we were well acquainted with our school and faculty, and loved them both. This year, due to a decrease in membership, it was necessary to divide our class in only six sections. We had now overcome our backwardness, to a certain extent, and proudly took part in school activities. Our class contributed the first Sophomore ever to make the Debating Team for the Fifth District meet. A Sophomore boy won fourth place in the State Bookkeeping Contest held in Macon. In our Junior year our class won more distinction. A Junior girl won second place in the State Home Economics contest. A Junior boy won sixth place in the State Bookkeeping Contest. The entire Debating team for the Fifth District meet, with the exception of one, was composed of Juniors. The president and secretary of the Dramatic Club were Juniors. A Junior boy was elected vice-president of the Hi Y Club. A great many of the Letter Club were Juniors, Our class furnished the captain of the boy's basket-ball team. We'll leave it to the reader to find a word to describe our feelings when we entered school, September, 1928. We were Seniors! We were so proud of the fact that we could hardly call ourselves dignified and tell the truth. Our class was composed of sections D-l, D-2 and D-3. As Seniors we were just a little more anxious to take a greater part in all school activities. A Senior was president of the Home Economics Club. The Dramatic Club chose a Senior for its president and one for its secretary. The president of the Hi Y was a Senior. The captains of the girls' basket-ball team, the boys' basket-ball team, the football team and the baseball team were Seniors. Seniors played a large part in the Debating Team, placing three members on the team. During our entire four years we have put forth the best we had to make our school better in every way. We attained the high record of scholarship and contributed liberally to every cause that concerned our school. We, the first Freshman class to begin our four-year course in the new building, planned to function as a well-balanced machine, bringing honor and credit to ourselves, our class and our school. During this first year we furnished ten boys for the band, one for the basket-ball team and two for baseball, besides a large number of those active in the clubs. A Freshman won the U. D. C. medal. We also had twenty- nine on the Honor Roll, this being the largest number from one class to win that distinction in one year. This record stands up until the present time. As an engine operates much better after it has had time to run and warm up, so did the class of '3O. Our number was quite a few less than the previous year, some unfortunate ones being precipitated out by the faculty or by other means. This year, as in our Freshman year, was well represented in athletics, con- tests and clubs. The prizes that were awarded for the IOOZ classes in Annual subscriptions and Red Cross drives were won by Sophomore classes. We are Juniors. Our class is running as smoothly as before and with more precision. More of our time is required for class work than here-to-fore. This has not caused a lull in outside activities, however, for we are again well represented. We, the Junior Class of '29, expect to be the best Senior Class Fulton has ever had-at least, here's hoping we will be! mlllx l 9 Z 9 P FLU 1LLTLO-N F O,R U M' xzqh' .... . ,v,.Y ,v.., .......... .........,. , . . .... .. .. . ,, K, I .,,.,,,,,,, , H 9 A H L . Its curriculum includes drill and command, military discipline, physical training, target practice, hygiene and first aid, and military courtesy. We are very fortunate in having Colonel Wm. R. Rashiel, United States Army, retired, as Professor of Military Science and Tactics. Colonel Dashiel graduated from the United States Military Academy with the class of '88. During his forty years as an officer, he has seen foreign service in the Philippines and France. During the World War he commanded a brigade in actual fighting. This department is in direct charge of Sergeant Robert L. Campbell. He came to this school in 1919 when our unit was first recognized by the War De- partment. I-Ie is ideally fitted for his position of Instructor, for he is not only a very efficient drill master, but he knows and understands boys as well. So long as Sergeant Campbell remains in charge at Fulton, rest assured that this unit will enjoy continued success, As a result of various competitive drills, B Company was selected as the star company. This company will represent Fulton at Piedmont on ROTC day. In preparation it is now perfecting the Silent Drill -a drill done entirely by music and consisting of more than 1,000 counts embracing prac- tically all movements of company drill. The Freshman class is the largest and finest in the history of the school. These boys, being first year boys, are not recognized by the War Department as being eligible for the Reserve Oflicers' Training Corps. Incidentally no uniforms or equipment are available for them. Despite this handicap they have progressed splendidly and we expect much from them next year when they will become eligible for enrollment in the Reserve Oficers' Training Corps. -GBUS 9 2 9 513 mn.,.1..,.:u:am...u,..m11.Mxualaaunsanmmm :tw 4 Z A, 4 'ff H J E5 mnimmr 1'1 lQ !l11!u9u1 ,Mum will w',.-ML o?', ,.Al!lLmmMiw 6 ,-1. The boys played well to tie a team that out-weighed them in every position, by the score of 6 to 6. After another week of getting in shape the team met Gainesville High in Gainesville, playing a fine game, but coming out at the small end of an l8 to 6 score. ln the next game, a home game, Fulton opposed Boys' High. The first half was played on fairly even terms, but during the last half Fulton weakened-the weight and ex- perience of the Boys' High players was too much to overcome. The Fulton was given the worst beating of the year. The Boys' High defeat rejuvenated the whole team. Coach Hammack and his charges traveled to Canton. The boys played all around the Canton team but were unable to score. The game with Decatur proved disastrous, for the score stood against us and our star players were put on the injured list. The team invaded Athens next. Al- though the Athenians came out with the largest score, they knew they had been in a hard football game. The Cartersville game found Fulton at her best, but unable to overcome a scoreless deadlock. Thanksgiving Day-the table was laid for a gala affair. Fulton locked horns with Maris College. The boys ran interference, ran around the ends, plowed through center, ran back punts, blocked, tackled and passed like demons. Fulton has the ball. A Fulton fellow breaks through with a clear field ahead! He is fifteen feet ahead of them! Marist pursues him! He is gaining! He is almost there! Marist stops him in the shadow of their goal. Five yards to go with ample time to make it. The fans are yelling for a touchdown! Fulton tries the center and both ends, but Marist holds and the game ends-Fulton, 12: Marist, 12. Much credit is due to a team that will stick through the season when the odds are greatly against them, and stick, Fulton did. What was gained? That old fighting spirit that will overcome struggles for the boys when their high school career is over. Coach Hammack, untiring in his efforts, deserves most of the credit for carrying the team through the most trying moments of the football season. Next year the players will be more experienced. Coach hopes to have a better team, a team that will successfully compete with the highest rated teams in the G. l. A. A. You can show your appreciation for what he has done in the past few years by giving him your support, whether you are a football player or a football fan. -HSHORTYH ROBERTS. W, ......... It is not how many of our fights we won, but how we fought that counts. Coach Hudson faced the proposition of building a new team with only two old props to lean to. With the aid of Ruby Moore and Sis Pickert, the veterans, she soon rounded Carolyn Hammond, Erma Young and Evelyn Nlorris into shape for the varsity. Fortunately she was afforded with a group of line substitutions. The players who remained on the squad, but failed to make the varsity were headed by Marie Mauldin, Sarah Mitchell, Blanche Reeves and Julia Pickett. By way of preliminaries, Fulton scored at will against Alines' Pep Squad, with Moore alone scoring several more points than the entire score of the opponents. The outset was none at all too promising, for like most of the other athletic teams the players were inexperienced. But at the outset, things al- ways look harder than they really are. Sis Pickert captained the girls through many memorable struggles. Next year's prospects are promising. All the regulars, with the exception of Moore and Captain Pickert, and most of the substitutes will be back. If all the old players come back Fulton will have a line team, but even with those more players are needed. More girls than heretofore should stimulate an interest in basket-ball. The school does not sponsor basket-ball teams for the pleasure of the coaches or even the pleasure of the players alone, but for the good of the school at large. The school is interested in you. That is the reason it finances the basket-ball teams. Why should you not take an interest in the school, in the basket-ball teams? You owe it to yourself and to your school. Next year when the call is issued for basket-ball players, if you have any basket-ball talent, report to Coach Hudson and have that talent developed, if the extent of your talent in this line is yelling for your team, come out and cheer old Fulton to victory. -RUBY MooRE. 1 9 Z 9 ULTONFHOIRU ........ ..-... fm ...... ,...., ... Preceding varsity practice, an inter-class tournament was held. This created a great interest among the students, and many boys, who thought they could not play well enough to try out for the varsity, played with their class teams. After a few days this group of players was narrowed down by Coach McIlwain to a varsity squad of Captain Ben Conyers, Faver, Ransbothan, Lindsey, Hightower, Roberts, Brown, Harrison, Tate Conyers, Chris Conyers and the dependable manager, Roy Traylor. This was a very inexperienced team, having only B. Conyers, Rans- bothan and Lindsey back from last year's squad. However, through Mr. Mads untiring efforts, it was soon rounded into a fast, smooth-running team. Team work prevailed. There was no outstanding star. The boys went through the hard schedule set before them, aggressive in battle, modest in victory and sportsmanlike in defeat. In the City Prep Tournament the boys were eliminated by the strong Georgia Military Academy quintet, which team was later proclaimed the champion. In the Fifth District Tournament the Fulton five won from Conyers in a hard game, but the fast Clarkston team defeated our quintet in a hotly con- tested battle. Ending the season our boys lost a game to the Georgia Military College in the G. I. A. A. Tournament held in Atlanta. As far as scores go their record is not so impressive, but they proved their worth by fighting hard throughout the season for their school-an immature group of players, but the 'Afightingest team in the Prep League. Fulton High is indeed proud of this team, not for the victories won or the games lost, but for the way they displayed Fulton spirit in every game. -BROOKS BROWN, '29, rqlmmrm ..... The new men to ind places on the team were Duncan, Anderson, Rooke, Hanson, Morgan, Jordan, Horton and Landers. Norton, the Maddox Park sand-lotter, roams at first with ease: Rooke looks good at second: Leftwich, the all-prep player of last year, shows the abilities of a big leaguer at third: Mullins performs at short-stop: Russ Wray and Lefty King keep the opposing batters guessing, Morgan and Chink Ander- son take time about on the receiving end: the outfield is composed of Rooks at right field, Clonts in the center, and Shorty Roberts in left field: a number of good utility men complete the team. The aforenamed team, with Coach Hope and manager Taylor to look after it, should finish near the top in the Prep League this year. Last year Fulton was runner-up in the Prep League, losing the play-off to Boys' High.
