Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1969 volume:

PILOT HICKMAN, KENTUCKY For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 FOREWORD These are the young years, the fruitful years when time means only the day after to- morrow. These are the years of wlstful-eyed beings with tender dreams, but youth is brutal as well as tender, and youth is reality as well as dream. A flower blooms and fades and blows away - and blooms again, according to the season; and in like manner youth exists from spring to spring, for to everything there is a season. We pause to bring forth on these pages the golden moments of time just past. May THE 1969 PILOT serve as a reminder of this season of our youth. F CONTENTS In the west of Fulton County, reared against the sky, proudly stands our alma mater. We have experienced days of working, playing, and learning together. Here we have found inspiration, guidance, and a foundation for a better way of life. From forgotten freshmen fiascoes emerge starry senior successes; girls and boys emerge women and men from the studious cocoon. 6 Mr.Bobby Childers B.A., M.A., Murray State University 10 Principal’s Message You and your class are to be congratulated on your accomplishments at Fulton County High School. The five semifinalists are from left to right: Ann White, Nancy Jo James, Amy Bondurant, Becky Newton, and Nancy DeMyer. Senior Favorites Participating As the 1968 school year began, many plans were made for the activities of the months ahead. Senior Favor- ites VICKIE HARRIS and DAVID POYNOR, presidents of the two largest clubs at F.C.H.S., showed qualities of capable leadership. As the Future Farmers of Amer- ica and the Future Home- makers of America are close- ly related clubs, David and Vickie worked together in many instances. Go big blue! yelled NANCY JO JAMES to star guard DON LATTUS. Nancy Jo, captain of the cheerlead- ers, and Don, -captain of the football squad, were inspira- tional to the team and fans because they never lost spirit in victory or defeat. In Highlights of the Year One of the outstanding attractions of the year was the Miss F.C.H.S. pageant. Attractive NANCY PARKER was sponsored by the Senior Class in the annual event. ROBERT FORSYTHE was given the honor of being Sir Gallahad” to the nineteen young ladies in the contest. On September 27th as the Pilots wel- comed the alumni, these two Senior Fav- orites participated in football homecoming. Shown here during the ceremony are AMY BONDURANT, an alternate in the home- coming court, and JOE CAMPBELL, who later contributed to a Pilot victory. All sixteen Senior Favorites were selected by student body vote. Senior Favorites Participating Christmas vacation finally arrived! Here Senior Favorites HARRY POYNOR, PAM McNEILL, TEANA CAGLE, and LARRY COX are shown contributing their time and talent to decorate the school Christmas tree. Seniors participated in activities such as this throughout the year. 62 in Highlights of the Year As the new year, 1969, rolled in, it brought with it basketball fever. The walls of the school were covered with pep signs be- fore every big game, and fans followed the team with hopes of success. Senior Favorites EDDIE WRIGHT and DONNA CHANEY root for their team with enthusi- asm. With graduation days looming shortly, CELIA WILKERSON and TOMMY STAYTON proudly view their senior rings. They recall all the good times at ole” F.C.H.S. and hopefully anticipate their futures. Football Queen On September 27 in a pregame ceremony Miss Judy Lynne Argo was crowned the 1968- 69 Pilot Football Homecoming Queen. Judy, a vivacious cheerleader, active band member, and Junior Class officer, was selected by the football squad. A large and enthusiastic crowd watched while the game progressed and became one to remember. The final score was 21-0 as the Pilots downed the Obion County Central Rebels for their newly crowned queen. Judy Argo 64 Attendants to the queen were Miss NANCY DEMYER and Miss AMY BONDURANT. Days of preparation preceded the event of January 10th when the Pilots played Charleston, Missouri. Selected by the varsity basketball squad, Miss Amy Bondurant was crowned queen. The home- coming court reigned on a beautifully dec- orated stage as they watched one of the seasons most thrilling games. Climatic to the event was a dance held the following night honoring the queen and her court. The traditional crowning ... a moment to be remembered for seniors Amy Bondurant and Joe Campbell. Good friends congratulate a new queen. Senior Hall BEST PERSONALITY Because of their congenial natures, AMY BONDUR ANT and TOMMY STAYTON were elected by the students of F.C.H.S. as having personality plus. WITTIEST Through the years the rays of sunshine for the Class of '69 have been VICKIE HARRIS and HARRY POY- NOR, whose clever antics kept us laughing. A high point in every junior’s year is the selection by the faculty of the delegates to Girls' State and Boys' State. These students are selected on the basic requirements of ini- tiative, leadership, scholarship, and personally. The delegates learn the fundamentals of local and state government by actually taking part in imaginary elections. With the knowledge they gain, the Staters return home ready to take a greater part in civic affairs. For a week last summer, the girls lived on the Transylvania College Campus at Lexington and the boys stayed on the Eastern University Campus at Richmond. 74 Achievement VALEDICTORIAN SALUT ATORIAN AMY BONDURANT NANCY JO JAMES These two students have obtained the averages of 97.22 and 96.5 respectively for three and one half years of high school. Maybe words can better express our feelings about our coaches. Coach ''A has heightened the spirit of all of his boys and of the student body. He was a star athlete at Murray State University. His skills and knowledge have helped to produce fine Pilot teams. His efforts are tremendously appreciated. Coach Speed is a beginner in the coaching field. This status, however, does not reflect upon his abilities. He also was a star athlete at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He has intro- duced new techniques that result in a winning team. Coach Speed is determined to use all of his strength to develop a fine team. There is a season. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER Confusion filled the halls. Freshmen encountered their first day at FCHS.
