Prophecy . Another delay' It was fortunate thrs was a vacatron wrth no partrcular schedule to follow and no deadlrne tor tne end ot the trrp Ur course we weren t hurryrng and drdnt use jet power on thrs auto trrp It was fortunate we drdnt for the roadblock appeared wrthout warnrng We must have been too busy enjoyrng the vast expanse of Kansas thrs beauttful June day 1960 to notrce any warnrng srgrs Such srgns grve one enough trme to come to a dead stop even when travelrng wrtn the great speed generated by jet engrnes But we drdn t see tre warnmg srgn even rf we were not us mg much speed we were confronted by thrs roadblock rn the mrddle of Kansas and, naturally we stopped Much to our derrgnt thrs partrcular delay added to the pleasure and rnterest of our trrp For whom should we see but an old irrend and former student lh t was by the merest chance for Way ne Watson was trarfrc expert tor the natronal hrghways and just happened to stop to see how effectrve the tratfrc check was at thrs partrcular place He had charge of traffrc checks rn seven states Thrs was to study the type of cars most rn use the way the federal hrghways were rneetrng the need or venrcles the changes whrch could be made rn the hrghways to rmprove them and varrous other matters Our car having passed the rnspectron for mechanrcal defects and been checked as to make model etc for Way ne s records we were tree to go on our way Wayne had told us that we mrght be lutky enough to see James Larroll srnce we were headed west toward the tree belt whrch had been planted to stop the dust storms of the thrrtres James had become a forestry expert and now was rn servrce of the federal govern ment He was busy makrng surveys of tree drseases recommendmg preventatrve measures and tryrnff to help wrtn cures where these were practlcal We found Jrm and had a delrghtful chat wrth hrm I'hen went on Someone had told us tr at .Joan Norrrs was rn San a rc ltr tew days She was and strll IS prrvate secretary to the head of a frrm whrch makes plastrc textrles Her posr tron carrres the greatest responsrbrlrty In fact she rs so efflcrent and knows so much about the busmess that her boss cant do wrtnout her he found that out when she took her vacatron last summer and vrsrted Pam rn Pnrladelphra Now she has her own prrvate secretary who takes over when she has to leave Pamela Burkey as you probably know has her own rnterror decoratrng busrness whrch rs raprdly becomrng a charn Sne used to be rnterested rn dress desrgn Deahng a she was wrtn fabrrcs rrnes and colors she began to rnterest herself rn the rooms where people should wear the clotr es sne had styled before sn knew rt she W s plannrng drawrng rooms lrvrng rooms even drsplay rooms for stores She became so fascrnated that sne kept her clothrng busrness ror a srderrne and rs raprdly ex pandrng the rnterror decoratron project untrr now rt promrses to bec me nat on wrds, Speakrng of rnterror decoratron mealtrme came and we decrded to decorate our personal rnterrors wrth some food After surveyrng the varrous places we decrded to stop at Amanoas restaurant You have guessed rt Amanda lvlartrn owns rt It rs a wonderful place to eat at Frrst of all rt rs clean the food rs well cooked delrcrous and nrcely served The restaurant rs quret and beautrtul Amanda has been asked re peatedly to expand rnto a natronal charn Thrs sne refuses to do however because she feels that sne could not personally supervrse any more and keep her hrgh stand ards So she contrnues to personally manage thrs one and the one rn Denver I am Convrnced that her personalrty helps to make me pr c s so popul r She wa so oust' that she drdn t have much trme to talk to us what wrth everyone comrng to her for advrce decrsrons etc In the few mrnutes she had Amanda drd tell us about Alrce Bcrck however Alrce became f scmated wrth the rdea of gorng west Sne had done a lrttle work wrth nur sery schools and lrked rt so decrded to combrne the two rdeas The result rs that she has three nursery schools rn Santa l'e and rs plannrng a fourth The rncrease rn travel and the new actrvrtres ln New Mexr o s ar tr ot mu r wo k or the al bomb make Santa Fe rdeal for her project She seems to be rdeal for rt as well Our vacatron frnally came to an end and we returned home Shortly after our re turn I ran rnto of all people Mary Utz rn Toledo It was luntn trme and we decrded to make the srtuatron a chance to catch up on what had been happenrng Mary has her own accountrng frrm and handles the ac ounts of s veral small businesses ID Io ledo as well as consultrng wrth some of the larger ones She seems to thrrve on rt Mary told me that Dare Vaughn had start tr as s re m n ror an atnletrc supply company and had seen a need for a drfferent type of person a consultant He talk ed wrth the executrves of hrs frrm and those of a few other supply houses Everyone thought he had an excellent rdea What he does rs to meet wrtn servrce clubs other orgamzatrons or rndrvrduals who plan to construct or alreadv operate playgrounds gymnasrums and srmrlar projects He helps wrth the plannrng of those to be con structed If the project rs rn operatron he otrers sudgestlor s L, 1 upk ep or po srble ex pansron Anyone can see that rt offers an excellent opportunrty for salesmanshrp Dale seems to be takrng advantage of the opportunrty After lunch Mary lrurr ed back to her wo k and A proceeded to attend to some err ands Passrng a news stand I was st pped dead strll by the face on the cover of the latest prcture magazrne Lrfes Qurck Look The e she was Mrss Demure Person alrty of
