I--I I--I ILLJ l ' ' PROFESSOR MATLOCK Because he has had many years ot excellent service as a teacher and has been at Fullerton Iunior College tor eleven years . . . because he is retiring at the end of this year We Wish to express our appreciation for his services . . . We dedicate our annual to Mr. Matlock. He is a man ot Wide scholarship and equally Wide human interests. And to students his manner seems to be that ot the spirit of this book, intormality. Characteristic of our campus lite, intormality has set the style of 1937's yearbook. Feeling that the impression of a school lies in campus associations and personalities, We have made use of sketches and snaps to outline this idea more clearly. We have Worked toward an ideal-a yearbook which will recall not only classmates and scheduled events, but the atmosphere of the school itself. --fn zliffl, A f' f jf' mf 3 .ww 1- f +ve ka 1, f ,A f. At the September election Vernon Branson was chosen president, Iay Mc!-Xulay, vice-presidentg Isabel McNamara, sec- retary. Mr. Ruby is class adviser. ln November the class presented Sir Iames Barrie's play, What Every Woman Knows, Which Was the equal of their last year's offering, The Late Christopher Bean. The class spon- sored the Autumn picnic, gave a dance for the Freshmen, presented several other dances, matinee and evening. One of the highlights of the year Was the old clothes day before the Santa Ana game. The spirit shown by the class last year was carried on this year and there have been participation and leader- ship in all phases of college life. Espe- cially active in athletics, departing Sophomores will leave a good record behind them. They set an example to be followed by the Freshmen, and may it be hoped that succeeding classes will follow their lead. V. Branson, I. McAu1ay, I. 'W my lr .-, . J. A. R, .fzaw , any Beginning the year with six hundred fifteen members and showing an in- crease in number at the mid-year, the Freshman class has participated in all fields of activity. Elected in September to direct the class were President Pony Swenson, Vice-President Mary Nordrum, Secre- tary Ethel Chaffee. Adviser is Mr. Garner. Activities sponsored by the class in- cluded the Freshman dance, the class play and afternoon dance to advertise the play. Freshmen were well repre- sented in athletics, dramatics, journal- ism. The Freshman play, The Dark Tower, was presented in March, and was a complete success. In April the student talent program was given, with several Freshmen in the cast. Although defeated by the Sophomores at the be- ginning of the year at the Freshman picnic, the class has proved that they are not to be beaten in class spirit. Their enthusiastic support of Fullerton is shown by the turnout at athletic con- tests and every school affair. The class as a whole seems to be vitally inter- ested in everything going on. They have shown outstanding leadership as well as versatility in every phase of activity. ' 1 1' y .A .. Association at the Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach. Occupying a good position in the combined symphonic or- ganization Was l:'ullerton's band. This is the first year the band has been organized as a necessary part ot the college program, and enrollment has been large. Enthusiasm at all the football games, at pep rallies and school affairs Was heightened by the band's partici- pation. Our symphony orchestra represents fine attainments in college music and is the growth of an ideal, the founda- tions ot which run back many years. Transition from the idea that music was a mere outside relaxation and for entertainment only, to the concept that it is a vital educa- tional opportunity, has taken time. Harold Walberg, conductor of our College Symphony Orchestra, has made it possible to seek music's deeper meanings and to build this into student lite and thought. lt is a Worthy ambition made real. Nashold, Edwards, Litchfield, Walberg, Dysinger. Contributing to the entertainment of college students, directors of drama, music and stagecraft have presented a variety of productions ranging from the Christmas Play to the musical com- edy presented in April. Other produc- tions of the year, directed by Dean Litchfield, were the Sophomore and Freshman plays, Nightwalkers' pro- ductions, the Delta Psi Omega play. Under the efficient and capable direc- tion of Glenn Lewis, the physical edu- cation department has outlined a pro- gram of activity in some phase of which every man student may find that which is of interest to him. Roy Priebe, newest member of the coaching staff, directed the football squad against the best group of oppo- nents the Eastern Division has seen in years. A consistent builder of championship teams, Art Nunn again headed the Hornet basketball team, in addition to piloting the jacket baseball squad. Still turning out winning and spectacu- lar teams, Iimmy Smith, swimming and water polo coach, received just reward for his past successes when swimming was elevated to major sport ranking this year. Once more under the direction of Har- old Lang, the track team went through its usual highly successful season and produced several outstanding athletes. Wrestling, this apiary institution's most increasingly popular sport, was stu- dent-coached, the duty for the second year falling to the capable Oliver Stonehocker. Voluntarily serving in the capacity as coach, Gerald Beoge, local townsman, instructed the consistently stellar tennis team to victorious perfection this year. FRONT ROW-R. Neia, R. Summers, L. The Varsity Club reorganized this year under the guidance oi a group oi lettermen headed by Bill Merriam, purposing to become one ot the leading campus organizations. This objective has, in a large measure, been realized. Led by presidents Sully and Newsom the club has been outstanding socially as Well as scholastically and athletically. This year's yell and song leaders were chosen by the student commission after competitive try-outs had been held before the student body in an assembly. l-lenry Chapman, Claude l-loran, and Lea Rennison were elected to tire the cheering section, and the Collins twins, Katherine and Ellen, were selected to be music mistresses. Autumn 1936 found the Hornet football squad no longer under the direction of Art Nunn, who has long successfully guided P. I. C. football destiny, but in the hands of the physical educa- tion department's newest member, Roy Priebe. A larger turn-out than usual met during the first few weeks of practice but dwindled to the usual thirty or so reporting squad members as the season progressed. First practice games founded high hopes of the team: Pomona College was held, 13-U, and Los Angeles I. C., usually one of the strongest aggregations in the Western Division, was beaten, 7-U. Entrance into the conference schedule found the Yellowjacket gridders the victims of a series of bad breaks and a spell of lamentable luck which so dogged the team the entire season that the nearest the hard luck Hornets ever came to victory was in the opening game against Pomona which resulted in a 6-6 tie. All the favorable fate which the jackets deserved came in one encounter, a non-league tussle with Oceanside, in which the Priebemen ran wild for four quarters and piled up a 53-O score. The season's climax was, traditionally, the Thanksgiving Day classic with the hereditary down-county rivals, Santa Ana. This meeting found the locals playing the best ball of their year, and the mighty Don, who was later awarded the Southern California championship, was held 13-U. In this finale nine Sophomores wore the blue and gold into battle for the last time. Led by Captain Lauterborn, twiice all- conference tackle, Ridgeway, Rockwell, Chandler, Landreth, Sully, McNurlin, Lambert and Epsom formed the group of grid and campus favorites who will be long remembered by Bloon- gold enthusiasts. Baker, H. Rockwell, Coach Nunn, V. Branson, E. Miller, L. Robeson, To the Yellowjacket basketball team goes the credit of starting- Eullerton's 1937 monopoly of championships. After the jacket football eleven had experienced a season of abuse, Art Nunn's blue and gold clad basketball team started Fullerton well on its way back to prestige in jaycee sports circles with a pair of titles -Eastern Division and Southern California champions. Proving their Orange Empire Conference record of twelve straight wins was no flash in the pan, the Hornets administered two lickings in a row to the Long Beach Vikings, Western Division titleholders, to win the Southern California crown. The Wasps stung the Vikings 26-2l in the playoffs opener at Fullerton and iced the title with a 35-33 win at the beach city. l:'ullerton's undefeated Orange Empire record marked the first time in the history of the league a team has gone through its schedule without defeat, and winning the Southland crown in two games straight was a fete no junior college quintet had accomplished in several years. Out of five positions on the Eastern Division all-conference team, three members of the Hornet aggregation earned recognition. Ted Neja, sophomore forward and team high scorer with l75 points, Lee Woodward, frosh center, with l47 points for runner- up honors, and lack Schell, veteran guard and winner of the most valuable player award, were unanimous choices for the mythical quintet. Buck Newsome, guard, received a second team all-conference assignment, while Captain Walt Leichtfuss and Captain-elect Andy Echle gained honorable mention. Other men playing ..a part in winning the championship were: Lambert, Rockwell, Branson, Robeson, Mclrlenry, Baker, R. Echle, Allison, and Miller. 'w.e..vn wad... , arm... . . , ,. E. ALLISON A. With the addition of several frosh top-notchers to bolster eleven returning letterrnen, Coach Harold l..ang's track and field squad proved itself the strongest in the history of the school with a clean sweep of its dual meets and a comparatively easy victory in the Eastern Division championships. At the time of this write-up the Yellowjackets were among the favorites to win the Southern 'California championship. The high-geared Hornet machine, after coasting through its dual meet schedule undefeated, steam- rolled to victory in the Eastern Division championships at San Bernardino with a total of 831fg points to set a new high scoring level in that meet. During the course of the season, four new school records were established and one equalled by the Lang- men. Norman Larson tied the record of 24 seconds flat in the 220-yard low hurdles and took the 120-yard flight of high barriers in 14.5 seconds for a new record. Galloping Ioe Kurtz lowered the mile mark to 42322. Buck Newsome set the only new stand- ard in the field events by tossing the discus out l43 feet 1 inch. Captain Paul Moore lowered his own half-mile mark to 2 minutes flat. Erwin Powerhouse Miller, 400-meter Olympic Games finalist, rated as Eullerton's most consistent winner to wage a scoring duel with Larson for team high scoring. Each scored in the neighborhood of 65 points. Another Orange Empire conference championship in the form of a baseball pennant was added to Hornetvil1e's overstocked trophy room by Coach Art Nunn's Fullerton I. C. Yellowjackets. In addition to winning the Eastern Division title, the Hornet nine defeated their arch rivals, the Santa Ana Dons, to win the Orange city park dedication trophy. The Hornets, with five wins and no defeats, won the right to represent the Eastern Division in the Southern California playoffs, yet to be played at the time of this write-up. With ten lettermen forming the backbone of the squad and freshmen recruits adding strength to the offensive and de- fensive departments, the Hornets were able to put a classy ball club on the field with sufficient reserve strength in the dugout. Heavy hitting Ernie Villasenor at first, Sonny Leitchfuss, and Captain Robeson forming the keystone combination, and Don Alexander at third, the Wasps boasted a well-rounded infield. Bill Merriam, Ted Neja, Paul Pugh, Ioe Heinz, Clint Flynn and Blake Bevill provided the Nunnmen with two sets of outfielders, and Merritt Lambert and Gabby Barman shared catching duties. ferry Oswald and Bus DeVolder formed the mound corps. Proving himself one of the best hurlers in Blue and Gold history, Freshman Bus DeVolder southpawed his way to strikeout fame in the Eastern Division conference. ln three games the Hornet slab artist struck out 54 batters, twice registering a record of 20 strikeouts in a single contest.
