The healing of the body by Divine Power, or Divine Healing in its many aspects as practiced by the early Church. (Acts 4:30. Rom. 8:11. Cor 12:9. Jas. 5:14.) How can I justify my life? This is a question which arises to confront every thoughtful person who pauses to ponder the purpose of his existence. Before I can logically determine the plan and purpose for my life, I must first be sure that I have life. The Bible states in 1 John 5:12: “He that hath the Son hath life.” If I do not have Christ abiding within, I do not have life. Life, real life is in Jesus Christ, and when I re¬ ceive Him I receive life. Now, having received Christ, I must seek to justify His gift of life. When we turn to the Bible for an answer, we read in Acts 13: 22, that David was a man after God’s own heart. Verse 36 declares that he served his generation by the will of God. I, too, have a generation to serve. A generation of people exist¬ ing in anguish of soul and perishing in hopeless despair. They do not know the Prince of Peace and the Author of life everlasting. To justify my life I must meet the challenge and need of this my generation. This responsibility can fall on no one else. Christ is the answer. Christianity, centered in Jesus Christ, isn’t just another way of life, it IS life. In our Burning Lamp this year, we want to present how we at Full Gospel Bible Institute believe we fit into God’s great plan for winning this generation to Christ. - Editorial IT IS FINISHED PROVISION ENOUGH IT IS WRITTEN PROOF ENOUGH. • • • that Vi of the world ' s population have never heard the name of Jesus? that 2000 languages are spoken in the world today? Only 200 languages have a translation of the whole Bible? 1 000 have no portion of the Word of God at all? that 94% of all preachers minister to 9% of world populace? We, the English speaking people comprise the 9%; yet see how unchristian our Christian land is. Can you realize the state of the rest of the world! Communism, Catholicism, and other world re¬ ligions are striving to engulf these multitudes in their damnable doctrines. I • • The importance of having the right Faculty to teach the Word of God? A true teacher must not only give what he believes but also live it. We, the students of F.G.B.I., can truth¬ fully say how thankful we are for men and women of God who have dedicated themselves to the teaching and living of the Word of God. ?«, QL S. WcjCean President of Full Gospel Bible Institute. To have a part in Bible School is both a privilege and a great responsibility. I do feel that one of the most effective things I can do to meet the great need and challenge of my day and generation is to have a part in helping to prepare young 1 men and women as soul winners, workers, leaders, ministers, and missionaries for the work of the Lord. However, we of F.G.B.I. are very conscious that we cannot do this work alone. We need the prayers, help, and co¬ operation of God’s people to accomplish the plan and purpose He has for each detail of the work of Bible school. THE GREATEST USE OF LIFE IS TO SPEND IT FOR SOMETHING THAT WILL OUTLA ST IT. Principal of Full Gospel Bible Institute The PURPOSE of my being connected with Bible School is best described in Paul’s words to Timothy. “The things that thou hast heard . . . the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” I Timothy 2:2. The PLANS which I am following are found in the words of the Apostle in his letter to the church at Philippi, “holding forth the word of life” Philippians 2:16. My PLACE is this great harvest field is no greater than any other servant of Christ. My responsibility is to serve my genera¬ tion by the will of God, so that the generation to come, might know the Lord. I have a place here at Bible school so that by all means I might save some. CD IS, Instruction is within the economy of the Church of Jesus Christ. God Himself is implored by man “Teach me to do Thy will, O God” Psalm 143:10. Jesus Christ’s ministry is rife with illustration of a teaching ministry; while of the Holy Spirit, it is recorded “He will guide you into all truth” John 16:13. It is not strange then, that when Christ ascended into heaven, He gave among other gifts to His Church, Teachers. Teachers have been divinely appointed by God to transmit His truth from generation to generation. Adam and Eve taught Cain and Abel; Ezra taught the people so that they understood the will of God; and Paul and the Apostles taught in synagogues, houses and open air cathedrals. Realizing God’s command “Thou shalt teach” Deuter¬ onomy 6:7, recognizing there is a greater condemnation for unfaithfulness in this order, and confessing untold blessing to teachers who commit to faithful men the truth of the Gospel, so we strive. Miss Pearl L. Krogel ? T 4 BUT WHAT HE THINKS: HE IS. Eston, Saskatchewan. The command of Jesus to spread the Gospel to all nations is a challenge to every believer, thus every MINISTRY and METHOD should be used. It was while I was engaged in Pastoral work that I realized the MINISTRY of teaching could be a METHOD of Evangelization. Paul who had a ministry of teaching instructed Timothy to commit that which he had learned to faithful men, who could teach others also, thus this method would fulfill ' the MOTIVE in Paul’s life. His MOTIVE is, as ours should be, “to be all things to all men that by all means I may save some” I Corinthians 9:22. Thus whether I minister at F.G.B.I., Bible Camps, or pastoring a Church in the summer months my Motive is to use this Ministry and Method to win others to Christ. Rev. Robert T. Wilson Eston, Saskatchewan. A MAN IS NOT WHAT HE THINKS HE Rev. Albert D. Marshall Eston, Saskatchewan. Typing is an asset to every Christian whether he is a pastor, worker, or lay person. It helps him to keep neat, legible notes and articles to which reference can be made at a later date. It also helps to show h.s best in all official correspondence. At F.G.B.I. it is our aim that in all things we might better equip Christians to serve the Lord. I am indeed thankful for the privilege to be able to have a part in training students to be effective, efficient witnesses of Christ. It is also a privilege to be of service to the Lord through my wcrk as secretary and registrar. I want to do MY best fcr Jesus. Mr. J. Ronald Burnside Eston, Saskatchewan. From earliest times music has been a part of true worship for it is a means of giving vent to the soul’s de¬ votion. I am thankful for the musical talents which the Lord has given to me. To the best of my ability I am endeavouring to transmit to the students something of what I have learned in not only the technical points but also the spirit of music. It is my hope that they in turn will use what they have learned to lead others into the knowledge of Christ. It is my conviction that in so doing the Word of God shall be honored. In I Chron¬ icles 25:7 we read that Heman’s family and others were “instructed in the songs of the Lord” and also on in¬ struments. For what purpose? “For the service of the House of God.” Rev. Wilbert E. Crowder Eston, Saskatchewan. All God’s people are called to be labourers in the harvest field. The position as business manager differs not from any other call of service. I recognize I am not my own, but belong to God. In order for me to bring any praise to God for any position I hold, all service I render must be by the enablement of the Holy Spirit. So we being many are one body in Christ. Let us wait on our ministering to do it as of the ability that God giveth. Providing things honest in the sight of all men is a field of service that can truly be used for the salva¬ tion of souls. To this I dedicate myself with the full realization that it is not by might nor by power but by His Spirit. Mrs. J. Donald Thunberg Eston, Saskatchewan. In Matthew 18:14 Jesus plainly stated, “It is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.” God made this schip- ture a living reality when He called me to the life-time service in working with children and young people. Sunday School, Daily Vacation Bible School and Children’s Camps play a vital part in the lives of our children today. My basic aim as a children’s worker, is to reach them, teach them and use them for Christ. If we don’t USE them as children, we’re bound to LOSE them as teenagers. According to Matthew 18:5, children ARE important. Jesus said, “Whoso shall receive one such little child in My Name receiveth Me.” God has shown me the POTENTIAL POWER UN¬ LIMITED in the vision and stamina of our youth. Ecclesiastics 12:1 proclaims that people are to be reach¬ ed and held in the days of their youth before the evil days come upon them and the years draw nigh when they will have no pleasure in the things of God. WHEN CHRISTIANS CEASE TO STUDY THEY CEASE TO GROW. CD Each year Rev. Frank J. Kosick, pastor of the Calgary Full Gos¬ pel Church, comes for a brief visit. This is always a time of inspira¬ tion and blessing. This year, once agsiin, Bro. Kosick’s teaching on Prayer and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit was greatly appreciated by the students. His spirit-filled ministry in our devotional times was a great blessing as we saw and heard the operation of the very things he taught. Rev. Frank J. Kosick Calgary, Alberta. Rev. Arthur E. Sheppard is a dynamic young man with Evangelism as his passion. Each year he comes from the coast, where he and his family re¬ side, and gives thorough inspirational studies on Personal Evangelism, Theology Proper and Ephe¬ sians. His own fervent spirit encourages the students in worship and praise. Rev. Arthur E. Sheppard White Rock, B.C. Rev. Elwood L. McRae has a deep interest in the training of workers for active service. His part in this training is not lengthy but practical to the needs of the students. The varied studies he gives are appreciated by all as an essential part of our learning. We look forward to his coming every year. Rev. Elwood L. McRae R egina, Saskatchewan. Once again this year the students were capably instructed by Rev. Irvin W. Ellis. His ministry in Christian journalism is known to all through his editorials in the End Times’ Messenger. Here at Bible school we learn the fundamentals of arrangement ahd presentation of gospel truths through the printed page. We appreciate this practical training. Rev. Irvin W. Ellis Calgary, Alberta. CD NOTHING GREATER CAN BE SAID OF ONE THAN THAT HE IS APPROVED OF CHRIST. Eston, Saskatchewan. Eston, Saskatchewan. One of my favorite verses is Psalm 37:5, “Com¬ mit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.” It is wonderful to be able to commit my way unto the Lord knowing that He knows what is best for me. It is my desire that my way will always be com¬ mitted to the Lord and that I may serve Him in whatever way He wills. The knowledge of God’s love and grace is the greatest blessing of my life. Thus I count it a privi¬ lege to have a place ' of service in Bible school. In daily duties as assistant cook the presence and help of the Holy Spirit can be very real. My aim is to know the will of God in my life, and as a faithful steward do all my work as unto Him. “And whatso¬ ever ye do in word and deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:17. HAVE YOUR TOOLS READY AND GOD WILL FIND YOU WORK. CD That F.G.B.I. is geared to develop the whole person? Students acquire food for their souls in the study of the Word; spiritual growth through prayer and testimony; zeal and vision from Christian exhortation and fellowship; poise and friendliness through group partici¬ pation; a will to work and skill in common tasks through gratis duties; and a joy in serv¬ ing Jesus. GO Valedictorian The tragedy of this generation is not Communism. It is not that a Roman Catholic has been elected President of the United States. It is not even that the United Nations is a tottering power. Nor is it that our nation is so morally degenerated that it is on the verge of collapse. The tragedy of this generation is, “For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.’’ Philippians 2:21. Men are seeking after their own pleasures, lusts and desires and want nothing to do with God. This is the tragedy of the generation, and is the same as it has been for centuries. This sin has plagued the human race since Adam. This inspires hatred and lust in men’s hearts and causes nations to tear at each other’s throats. This has caused the rise of Commun¬ ism. The world situation screams at every human being that he CAN NOT get along without God! Yet the tragedy remains, “... all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.” The ONLY answer to this tragedy is for people to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, to accept Him as Saviour and Lord of their lives. But HOW are the masses going to be convinced that Jesus Christ is the answer? The world needs men!—men who are wholly given over to Jesus Christ, who are motivated by the throb of His Holy Spirit. It will take DEDI¬ CATED MEN to convince the world! In 1961, there are nineteen young people going out from Full Gospel Bible Institute with a basic knowledge of God’s Word and a desire to be fully yielded to the Spirit of God. We have an awesome burden on our shoulders, “....For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: .. Luke 12:48. The challenge is before us. The responsibility is ours. Overcomers! The urgency of our generation DEMANDS that we be those DEDICATED MEN who will convince the world that Jesus Christ is the answer to this tragedy. THE WILL OF GOD WILL NEVER LEAD YOU WHERE THE GRACE OF GOD WILL NOT KEEP YOU. Psalm 16:11 “ . . .in thy p resence is fulness of joy .. I do thank the Lord for saving me when I was a child; for His protecting hand upon me, and His leading in my life. I thank Him for the privilege of attending F.G.B.I. It was here I learned of the Grace of God and of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit—Truths which have brought “fullness of joy” to my life. My utmost desire in life is to so live that others may know that I love Christ. Know tnai i rove nrisr. Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for¬ ever; with my mouth I will make known thy faithfulness to all generations.” Truly the Lord has been merciful to me; He has done so much throughout my life. Although we fail the Lord many times He will never fail us. When I think of all the Lord has done for me, how can I give less than all to Him? I feel God’s hand upon my life and pray that He will enable me to faithfully fill my place in the harvest field. Mark 11:24 “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them.” How many times has this been proven true in my life! Truly, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise.” II Peter 3:9. He gives us more than we deserve or can ask for. What a wonderful Lord we serve! As an Overcomer, I want to serve the Lord the best way I can. In order to be an Overcomer, we must overcome. “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” I John 5:5. . T I truly thank the Lord for His Word I have always found that God’s Word is quick and powerful, and it does pierce to the very heart of man. I want to be in the place where the Lord can use me to bring glory to His name. The same Spirit that drove Jesus into the wilderness is the One I want to drive me into His service to do mighty exploits for Him. dvdjMtns I am thankful for the reality of Jesus Christ in my life. I have found David to be true when he said in Psalm 145:3 “his greatness is unsearchable.” I count it as a privilege to be able to study God’s Word for it is “quick, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword” Hebrews 4:12. His Word is the only thing that will convince and convict sinful men. Because of this, it is my desire to commit my life completely unto Christ. In Psalm 37:5 we read, “Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.” Considering the tragic conditions in the world today, I thank God for the thrilling answer He has provided in the Person of Jesus Christ. As I view the vast harvest field of human souls I realize the enormity of the job set before me. My desire and prayer is that I might unreserv¬ edly yield my body in reckless abandon to this great cause—the cause of Christ. Luke 9:24 “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.” ' THY WILL BE DONE ' IS THE KEYNOTE TO WHICH EVERY LIFE SHOULD BE TUNED. Jesus teaches this seeming paradox, “Whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” I have found that only in Christ is a vibrant, joyous life obtainable. My desire is that my life may be lost in Christ, that I may do His perfect will, as he enables. Only then will my life be successful, as God measures success. The fullest, richest, most satisfying life is hidden in Christ. These words sumarize my goal, “Let me bum out for Thee, dear Lord, bum and wear out for. Thee.” I Timothy 4:12 states: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Paul’s exhortation to Timothy has challenged me to also be a true example of a believer. With the enabling power of the Holy Spirit I want to glorify Jesus in every aspect of my life. How can I do less when Jesus my Lord has done so much for me? In Him I have real lasting peace, joy, and strength to meat each day. “Take the whole world but give me Jesus.” “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us” I John 4:10. I thank God for His love which sent His 1 . Son into the world to die for my sin. Since I accepted Christ as my Saviour I have been very conscious of His hand upon my life. His leading brought me to Bible school where His word has become real to me. I thank Him, too, for baptizing me with the Holy Spirit. My prayer is that I will be found faithful to my Lord who has done so much for me. This winter I have thoroughly enjoyed the studies of God’s Word. One book which has taken on new meaning to me is Ephesians. As we studied this book it blessed my soul to think that the exceeding greatness of God’s resur¬ rection power is to us and for us! I realize as I go forth this spring that I need this power to sustain and help me preach the Word with boldness and with the scriptural witness of signs following (Mark 16:15-20). May God give me “the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the know¬ ledge of Him” Ephesians 1:17. The Lord is good to me. He gave me a Christian home. He saved me, filled me with His Holy Spirit, and gave me a desire to serve Him. He’s done so much for me; I must give my all to Him. “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21. I want to be fortified with a knowledge of God’s Word, saturated with the drive and throb of His Holy Spirit, then motivated into aggressive action for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Saviour that I’ve accepted for my Redeemer and Substitute is not only the God of the past but of the future. He has saved me from the past and is preserving me for future blessings. I must keep looking unto Jesus who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Who for the joy that was sat before Him endured the cross, despising the shame and was set down at the right hand of the throne of God. I want to look to Him, for in Him dwells the fullness of joy. Psalm 16:11. 7 . FEED YOUR FAITH AND YOUR DOUBTS WILL STARVE TO DEATH. I can praise the Lord and say with Paul in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is in the power of God unto salvation to every one that believed; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” I am thankful th at salvation is for all. In Ephesians 2:8, 9 we read, “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works . . I want to thank the Lord for the many blessings that He, by His grace and mercy, has given me. ' OP ' n I can truly say “Amen” with Paul in Ephesians 2:13 when he de¬ clared under divine inspiration, “But in Christ Jesus ye who some¬ times were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.” I was “made nigh” at a very early age and can now see God’s guiding hand on my life in public school,, high school and in Bible school. The desire for my life is expressed in Philippians 2:15, “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among w ho ye shine as lights in the world.” A As I leave Bible school I have but one desire ana ' that is “to be what He wants me to be.” God has been so gracious to me, that I can do no less than give to Him my very best to use as He sees fit. A song writer has penned these words, “I do not know what lies ahead, the way I cannot see; yet One stands near to be my Guide, He’ll show the way to me.” How I thank God that though the future is unknown to me, I can put my trust in Him. i “I will guide thee with mine eye” Psalm 32:8. I know ofno better eye to be guided by than that of our loving Lord. I am thankful that I have a Guide in which I can trust. The words of this chorus help me express my feelings: “Christ is not a disappointme nt, Every longing in my breast Finds in Him complete fulfillment, He has brought me into rest. I have tested Him and proved Him, More than a friend or life to me Christ is not a disappointment He is everything to me.” Truly, Christ is everything to me. .V7 ) f Being raised in a Christian home I accepted Christ as my Saviour at the age of seven. I count it a privi¬ lege to have been able to attend F.G.B.I. and study God’s precious Word. II Corinthians 5:3 “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves—but our sufficiency is of God.” Christ has truly proved to be sufficient in all things to me. My desire is expressed in John 9:4 “I must work the works of Him that sent me while it is yet day: the night corned when no man can work.” It is with a thankful heart and with praise on my lips that I, too, can testify with .the Psalmist in Psalm 40:2-3, “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock ... And He hath put a new song in my mouth.” Not knowing what the future holds, I must say with Paul in II Timothy 1:12, “For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.” In my first year of Bible school, I chose Phillipians 4:13 as my verse—“I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.” Truly the Lord has been faithful. He has not only saved my soul and filled me with his Holy Spirit but filled my life with new hope, joy and peace; Christ not only is my Saviour, but has also become my Lord and Master. As we go forth to serve Him, I want to be found faith¬ ful in His service and walk worthy of the vocation where-r with I have been balled. tAACNIFIEfts Gary Penner Gary, our second year class pre¬ sident, always goes out of his way to- help and make others feel at home. GO Aiileitonei in Pxoyxe i When the Full Gospel Bible Institute was four years old, its buildings consisted of the two girls’ dormitories and two faculty residences. The first class to graduate had four members. Sixteen had graduated at the close of the fourth term. At the end of the eighth year the graduat¬ ing total has increased accordingly and now numbers fifty. The close of the twelfth term sees the Bible School, now with the boys’ dormi¬ tory and the chapel. Ninety-two students have completed three years of study and are serving in widely varied fields. Sixteen years have now passed into eternity. The total number of all the graduates to the present time has reached one hundred and sixty-seven. The commence¬ ment of the seventeenth year finds the third-year classroom and the dining hall on the grounds. The teaching outreach has also increased to include radio broad¬ casts by Rev. L. O. Pritchard. Literature, too, plays an important part in the spread of the Gospel; much of the basement of the boys’ dormitory has been converted into a printer’s shop. 167 students have now graduated from F.G.B.I. Of these: 21% are pastors 10% are pastors’ wives 9% are evangelists 8% are missionaries 52% are in general Christian servi ce GO The first student body had five teachers. The present faculty numbers twelve. REGENERATION IS RECEIVING A NEW LIFE, REFORMATION IS MERELY TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF. GO t • • Jbo you Realize THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER? Jesus said in Matt. 9:37-39: The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the Harvest, that He will send forth labourers into His harvest. The Bible teaches in Eph. 6:19-20, that we should pray for the ministers of the Gospel that they should receive utterance to speak boldly. We are also to pray for God to open a door of utterance. Col. 4:3. This in essence is what our prayer bands pray for, and as we view the closing doors around the world today, how much more we need to pray in the light of this knowledge. The desire of our prayer bands is to see full t ime Christian workers who will dedicate their lives to the cause of spreading the Gospel to the World. Pray with us that we may be chosen to labour in God ' s great vineyard. SASK. PRECIOUS JEWEIS FOR HIS CROWN Registrar THE IMPORTANCE OF REACHING TEENAGERS As we look at the tragic social, economic and spiritual condition of the world today we at once think of our teenagers — tomor¬ row’s leaders. The kind of character that is molded in young lives today will determine the type of citizens of tomorrow. The major part of our teen¬ age population take no thought of spiri¬ tual matters, thus they do not receive very much if any religious training. However, Satan works overtime to fill their pliable minds with his diabolical ideals and ambi¬ tions through the medium of debase literature, television and various forms of entertainment. Dare we sit idly by and watch our teenagers sink deeper and deeper into degeneration? Secretary-Treasurer General Director One of the main outlets for service m which about 30 students participate is the Happy Hour. This terms they operated seven different clubs. Five cars are used every week to travel to and from the towns where the clubs are located. During the winter 4,200 miles are covered in this work. Each week an average of of 75 to 100 students are reached with the gospel in this way and many accept the Lord as Saviour. GO DEPEND UPON IT, GOD ' S WORK DONE IN GOD ' S WAY WILL NEVER LACK GOD ' S SUPPLIES. I can really say that working as leader of the Christian Teen Club has been a bless¬ ing to me. I know thait I can speak for the other members of our team. Each week we have gone to meet with these teenagers to present Christ to them and sound Christian advice on practical living which they need so much today. We have enjoyed the teen enthusi¬ asm in singing lessons and quizzes. Teen Kathy McNabb gives John 3:36 as her favorite verse and testimony, “He that hath the son hath everlasting life.” NOEL McNEILL Each Happy Hour Club is a separate unit meeting once a week with its own leaders and teachers. The activities of the club include such things as choruses, quizzes, Bible lessons and special feat- tures. By special features we mean bringing different students who contribute a story, object lesson or new chorus. Each club has it’s own contest which encourages the pupils to be punctual, regular attendees who bring their Bible and visitors, and know their memory verses. We are sure that God accomplishes much in the lives and hearts of the children who attend. This year about asked Jesus into their hearts. Student Council 1960-61 The Student Council is comprised of the student body president and a class presi¬ dent and vice-president from each of the three classes. This body has the responsibility of some student activities such as outings, class functions, and recreation. This year we have promoted a memory contest on the Book of Philippians, quiz competitions between the classes, and organized recreation. Our purpose is to pass on to the faculty the ideas and opinions of the students and to help maintain a healthy, Christian atmosphere in which to study God’s Word. Witnessing Choir Tour April to June, 1960, was a period of intensive travel and ministry throughout the wester nprovinces for a selected group from the F.G.B.I. Choir, under the leader¬ ship of Rev. A. D. Marshall. Camps V.B.S. “Ye shall be witnesses unto Me.” Acts 1:8.
