■« $ V ' ' A p. f — sy JX YEAR of The Full Gospel Bible Institute Eston, Saskatchewan. rv r n- K 1 — V 1 .. i: “Our Home Church Away from Home” Dedication cJ It is with great pleasure that we, the students of the Full Gospel Bible Institute, dedicate this year book to the Board and Members of the Assembly of the Eston Full Gospel Church. Words cannot express the appreciation we feel for your wholehearted welcome, your Christian fellowship and encourage¬ ment, and faithful prayers on our behalf. Our sincere thanks for making this, in every way, our ' home church away from home”. Bible Institute 3 GLEN S. McLEAN PRINCIPAL Principal ' s M sage Never before in the history of the world have we faced a greater need for labourers who are filled with the Holy Spirit and who are grounded in God’s word. This presents a challenge to every serious thinking Christian. There are some things only God can do in the hearts and lives of His people in preparing them for His service. Yet there are other things He has planned would be accomplished through human ministry. Rea¬ lizing this, it is a real privilege but it is also a solemn responsibility to be entrusted by the Lord with the preparation of young men and women to meet the challenge and to help fill the great need in the world’s harvest field. We do thank the Lord for every mem¬ ber of the staff and faculty who faithfully share in this work. In this Year Book you will find a picture of each one of them and a brief account of their various responsi¬ bilities or the subjects which they teach. My subjects are, The Baptism In The Holy Spirit with the First Year class; a verse by verse study of The Epistle of Romans with the First and Second Year classes; and a study of the Old Testament Tabernacle with the Third Year class. In what ever capacity any of us may serve we are all deeply conscious of our dependence upon the Lord and the prayers of His people that we might be faithful in the responsibilities which are ours. We shall always be grateful to the Lord for all who have so faithfully stood with us in so many different ways in making the work possible. As this book is especially dedicated to the Eston Full Gospel Church which has served as the mother assembly to our Bible School family, we want to ex¬ press our heartfelt gratitude to each one, for the part they have had in this work in the years which are past. Now as we come to the end of another term and another group of graduates are leaving our midst we extend to them our sincere congratulations. We want to assure them they will always have a very close place in our hearts. Our prayers go with them that God will guide and direct every one of them into the centre of His will and that each one may be greatly used in His service. Bible Institute 5 Vice-Principal L. O. PRITCHARD At F.G.B.I. it is our joy to teach 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Bible Construction. In FIRST YEAR Bible Construction we endeavour to outline all the Historical Books of the Old Testament including the Pentateuch. Chart Studies of the Kings, dispensations, and relative studies, lay a foundation for a complete survey of the Bible. In the course of the first year studies, a dozen charts are given and the student who compiles the neatest and best chart booklet ' wins a prize. (The 1956-57 class winner was Ken Haase.) SECOND YEAR Bible Construction includes a survey of the New Testament with special emphasis on the Prophecy of Revelation. THIRD YEAR Bible Construction includes a survey of the Old Testament Poetical and Prophetical books with special emphasis on DANIEL and the so-called MINOR PROPHETS. Each year emphasis is placed on the importance of num¬ bers in the Bible. Numbers mean nothing if they are not literal. Forty years in the wilderness did not mean thirty years. Seventy years in Babylon did not mean sixty. Seven churches in Revelation do not mean seventy. A thousand years does not mean two thousand. Because of this em¬ phasis, L.O.P. is proverbially known by the phrase 70 means 70.” The subjects you like best you teach best. That is how I feel about the subjects I teach here in F.G.B.I. Each one of these seem to add to your sp iritual growth and stature increasing your usability of God and to His service. Church History is the story of the building of the glorious Church of Christ against which the gates of Hell” will never prevail. Christian Evidence secures your belief that the Bible is indeed the Word of God in truth, verbally- inspired and given to us by holy men of God as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Pastoral Theology assures you of the conduct of a true shepherd based on Bible Ethics and Standards. False Cults is a study designed to help in contending earnestly” for the faith as delineated in the Word of God. Congregational Conducting assures you of Song leader¬ ship in your assembly. English Bible lays the foundation as to HOW” we got our English Bible known as the King James Version. The Gospel of John is treated verse by verse over the three-year course. It is rightly termed the Gospel of Belief.” Dean A. D. MARSHALL Full Gospel ' M R. T. WILSON FIRST YEAR Bible Doctrine—Reveals the infallibility of the Word of God; Man, who through the sin of Adam, is eternally lost and in need of SALVATION by REGENERATION through faith in Jesus Christ who alone gives JUSTIFICATION. SECOND YEAR Bible Doctrine Is the work of the cross in: Redemption, Propitiation, Reconciliation and Sanctification. These are not obtained by law works, ' For by Grace are ye saved through faith.” Jew and Gentile alike are saved by Grace in the New Covenant of His blood, and through acceptance of this, we will meet the Lord in the air and be forever with Him. THIRD YEAR Christology—God in love sent Christ to be crucified, that sinful men by faith in Christ can have forgiveness of sins. The resurrected Christ will soon come for all who have accepted Him and He will be the Judge of all who reject God ' s plan of Salvation. SECOND AND THIRD YEARS Acts—Of men empowered by the Holy Spirit to work signs and wonders, proclaiming the good news, ' Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. PEDAGOGY In this course, we study the scriptural basis of the teaching ministry, the methods of Jesus, t he Master-Teacher, and their application to Sunday School teaching of today. The Laws of Teaching and the methods of lesson preparation and presentation are covered as related to Bible Clubs, Bible Camps, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and other forms of ministry to the children and youth. CHILD STUDY To effectively meet the spiritual needs of children, we must be familiar with the characteristics and needs of each age group. In these studies, we cover the physical, mental, social and spiritual characteristics of each age group from infancy to adulthood. We learn how to use these traits to train them in God’s Word. SUNDAY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION To operate most effectively and efficiently, a Sunday School must be properly organized. Pupils must be grouped and graded according to their needs and learning ability. Teachers and officers must be trained. In this course, we study the require¬ ments of a successful Sunday School and h ow to put them into practice. W. E. CROWDER Bible Institute 7 ■■■■■■■■ A. E. SHEPPARD Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, He may give it you.” John 15:16. Every thing produces after its kind, therefore any effort to increase our fruitbearing as Christians will receive the direct seal of God. Such are the blessings we enjoy in Personal Evangelism classes with the first years. Systematically we discover how to lead the sinner to Christ. All have sinned and need a Saviour. Rom. 3:23, Isa. 53:6. The wages of sin is death. Rom. 6:23. The remedy for sin—the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 15:1-4. The only condition of salvation—Believe. Acts 16:31. Eternal life is given to those that believe. John 5:24. Christ’s power will keep you. Phil. 1:6, Jude 24. The time to decide for Christ is NOW. Prov. 27:1. In the second year class, we have been studying Eschatoiogy, a study of future things such as Heaven and Hell, while with the third year class, we have revelled in the glorious heavenly truths of the Epistle to the Ephesians. Teaching the first year class Jude, and Bibliology, the second year class Theology Proper, the third year class Homiletics. The little book of Jude, with its strong exhortation to earn¬ estly contend for the faith and its warning to apostate teachers who seek to turn people away from the truth of the gospel that will save their souls, i s taught in our first year studies. Bibliology exalt the wonderful Book of Books, the Holy Bjble, an interesting study on the facts concerning the Bible, that inspired Word that is the power of God unto salvation to all that believe. Theology Proper is a study of the facts concerning our God. It begins with the study of the Hebrew names of God and their meaning, then the attributes of God. In this study we see God as the almighty, wise, faithful Creator, our Saviour. Homiletics, the science of preaching, setting forth tried and proven methods of presenting the gospel, that we may be more effective in winning souls for Christ. 8 Full Gospel E. L. McRAE F. J. KOSICK The Gifts of the Holy Spirit: To fully experience the Power of the Holy Spirit in the lives and ministry of believers, it is necessary to understand the teaching of the Gifts of the Spirit, as Paul enumerates them as given in 1 Cor. 12. Great i ' s the tragedy when we think of the lack of knowledge among Christians as to the operation of these “spirituals”. It is the plan of God that each of these gifts” should be in full manifestation in every local church. The Church and Missions: The supreme task of the church is the evangelization of the world. In the study of missions according to the New Testament plan, we note that Paul was a church planter. The fruit of His labours was always leaving behind an established church, with elders, deacons, and governments in operation according to the New Testament pattern. The church planted becomes responsible for the evangelization of the “regions beyond”. The “World” is the field ready to be evangelized by the church equipped with “Spiritual Power . I am convinced that Christian writing is a ministry just as important as preaching or missionary work. The importance of Christian journalism is further emphasized when we realize the way in which the enemies of the Gospel of the Grace of God have studied to capture the minds and hearts of young and old through the printed page. Today, the presses of the world are pouring forth a flood of suggestive, seductive and subversive literature. Realizing the need of teaching the basic techniques of Chris¬ tian journalism, the Full Gospel Bible Institute is providing practical, down-to-earth instruction on how to write properly organized material in keeping with the tempo of today’s news¬ papers and magazines. Prospective ministers and Sunday school workers will find this training invaluable. I. W. ELLIS Bible Institute Staff Business Manager J. R. BURNSIDE In 1956, a much needed member was added to the Staff, namely Bro. Burnside, as business manager. Responsibilities and burdens resting on his shoulders are many and varied. Hi ' s great love and interest in young people enables him to fill his position well and he has endeared himself to the hearts of the students. Bro. Burnside is one of the original members of the Bible School Board and has had a vital interest in the School. He also has a vision for the work of missions, proving to be a challenge to many. We do appreciate his ministry in the School, and thank God for his love and interest in the work of the Lord here. Pearl Krogel, our faithful and dependable Registrar and Secretary, continues to do a very important part of the work of the Staff as she takes care of all the minute details connected with the office. As an efficient and capable Staff member, she works quietly and cheerfully, keeping everything in the office running smoothly. Registrar P. KROGEL 10 Full Gospel Bro. and Sis. Weedmark are new members of the Staff this year. They came to us from Neelin, Man., and have taken over the duties and responsibilities of the kitchen. It has been their task to satisfy the various dieti ' tional tastes of 74 students. This has been a new experience for them and they have done a splendid job of meeting the demands placed upon the m. It was indeed a thrill for them to move into and enjoy the facilities of the spacious new dining hall and kitchen, so recently occupied. MAVIS STEIN, R.N. We do appreciate having Flo and Mavis with us again and serv¬ ing in this capacity; also their willingness to add this extra responsibility to their busy schedule. FLO WILSON, R.N. Bible Institute 11 year Book Committees SALES A. E. Sheppard John Abraham Jim Arneson Earl Jellison It has been our privilege to prepare for you an¬ other chapter of the Burning Lamp. As its pages are read it is the prayer of our hearts that not only will it picture life at F.G.B.I. but, because of something found between its covers, many might be encouraged in their Christian walk. We pray, too, that some might find the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, and to others, that it will be an influence to give themselves to a time of study in God ' s Word in preparation for His service. With the conclusion of this chapter of the Burn¬ ing Lamp it is for the Gleaners, the graduating class, the closing of a wonderful chapter in our lives. We trust by God ' s grace it will be the beginning of an even better one for His glory. For the Challengers”, the second year students, it is with the anticipation of a goal in sight, that they look ahead, realizing that through another term they have been challenged over and over again from God ' s Word to be at their best for Him. It has indeed been the beginning, for the Torch- bearers , the first year class, of which we trust will be one of the most important chapters in their lives; one that they might have an increasing desire to complete. Looking back each one of us can say, He hath done great things for us whereof we are glad . I would like to thank each one of the above committees, and all others who have helped, for their faithful and untiring co-operation in our efforts together in preparing this book. God bless you. AGNES HALL, Editor. 12 Full Gospel President MELVIN HANSON Vice-President SYLVIA McLEAN STUDENT COUNCIL Third Year Representatives AGNES HALL JOHN ABRAHAM First Year Representatives DOREEN MOORE GLEN PAULSON Second Year Representatives SYLVIA McLEAN JIM ARNESON Bible Institute 13 God has given to man a treasure more valuable than all the silver and gold in the world. Sad to say it is so common that most people do not realize its infinite worth. This unique treasure is God ' s Word, which is known as the Bible. Modernists today have tried to undermine the absolute reliability of God’s Book. Most homes in our country, although they have access to the Book of Books, do not read It. Worst of all professing Christians have lost their hunger for God’s Word. When we examine God’s Book we find that God has revealed to us all of His great mind that we need to know. In it the way of salvation through personal faith in Jesus Christ is revealed. The Christian who reads It will be established in the faith and will be able ROSS REID to live a happy and fruitful life. God’s plan for the world and his many provisions and prom¬ ises which he wants us to have are made known in the Bible. Joshua 1:8 tells us that if we will meditate in God ' s words and live by its precepts, we will be prosperous and have good success. David desired the Word of God more than fine gold, and Job even esteemed it more necessary than natural food. Here at Bible School we have had the privilege of examining this priceless treasure and searching out its unfathomable depths. It has revolutionized our lives and given us a burning desire to make it known to others who haven’t heard. It is also our desire that you, too, may realize God’s plan for your life through His precious Word. ROSS REID. 14 Full Gospel Bible Institute 15 Class Mist ory It took God to change our motives and our aims in life to bring us from secular work, to¬ gether as a class o f students in the fall of 1955 to study His Holy Word. This is what He did when He brought to F.G.B.I. our class; eight from cities and the rest from the town and rural areas. Of these, fourteen were from Saskatchewan, three from Alberta, four from B.C., two from Manitoba, and one from Ireland. From various walks of life we came, farmers, secretaries, factory workers, lumber¬ jacks, a preacher’s son, a bank clerk, and a contractor. In spite of our various back¬ grounds we had one thing in common — a de¬ sire to study the Bible. During our first year, “Gleaners” was chosen as our class name and Mildred Sauer as our class representative. Of our number, twenty returned for their second year. Wendell Mills joined us, making a class of twenty-one. This term proved to be an eventful one, with new experiences and responsibilities. Mary Kerr was chosen to act as vice-president of the Student Council, and - 1 6 - Mel Hanson was elected as our class repre¬ sentative. The highlight of the year was the wonderful outpouring and moving of the Holy Spirit among the students. During the summer of 57 the ties were strengthened between us by class bulletins, relating our experiences in whatever field of service we were found. It was a disappointment to find four of our number had not returned for their third and final term. However, Hazel Wilken returned for her final year, making us a class of eigh¬ teen. Mel Hanson was chosen as President of the Student Council, our class representa¬ tives being John Abraham and Agnes Hall. It would be impossible to tell all that these three terms at F.G.B.I. have meant in each of our lives, but we stand on God’s Word, “. . . He whic h hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”. -Phil. 1:6. Bible Institute 33 34 Full Gospel FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENT BODY CLASS FUNCTIONS Shortly before the completion of the term in 1957, Class Functions were started. Each class has as their sponsor their choice of a member of the faculty, who con¬ tinues as such throughout the three-year term. These gatherings are arranged on evenings suitable to each class. After a short time of entertainment, lunch is served, and class pro¬ jects, summer bulletins or other business per¬ taining to the class, is discussed. What has proven to be the most joyful and uplifting part of the evening follows, a time of testimony and fellowship. This has not only blessed our souls, but has created a new bond of love and unity among the class mem¬ bers. To climax this wonderful evening a message is given from God’s Word by our sponsor. It is our prayer, that in future years, these evenings might continue to be the blessing they have been to us. Bible Institute 35 SECOND YEAR CLASS FIRST YEAR CLASS 36 Full Gospel PRAYER BANDS According to the custom of past years the students of F.G.B.I. are divided into Prayer Bands representing the various countries and areas of the world. Each group meets once a week for prayer. Every member of the Prayer Band en¬ deavours to write to one or more of the missionaries in the field for which they have a burden. Thus, we receive letters voicing the requests most near to the hearts of the missionaries in that par¬ ticular area. Our Prayer Bands are those of Home Missions; India; China, Japan and Korea; South America; Island World; Europe; and Africa. On the average there are from ten to twelve of us on a Prayer Band. In their turn, each Band takes charge of the devotional service Wed¬ nesday mornings and once a month in the Full Gospel Church for Young Peo¬ ples ' service Saturday night. During these services the various needs are presented from the different areas and we thank the Lord for the con¬ cern and vision many receive for these fields. Some of our number from previous years are already on the whitened har¬ vest fields of the world, and others are preparing to follow as we hear the Lord of the Harvest saying, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature Bible Institute : 37: 38 Full Gospel Full Gospel “Sing Unto Zhe Cord a J kw Song ’’ “Sing unto the Lord a new song . . Psa. 96:1. This year one of the largest choirs in the history of F.G.B.I. is again singing out the gospel story under the capable leadership of Rev. A. D. Marshall, with Miss Norma John¬ ston as pianist. What an uplift it is to the hearts of the students as they meet regularly for practise, and in the rendering of these choir pieces, which also adds much to the spiritual wor¬ ship of the Assembly. Apart from the choir, place is always given for other vocal and instrumental arrangements through which the various students are able to develop the talent the Lord has given them. In the past year Bro. Marshall has toured Alberta and Saskatchewan with the choir and last fall with the Bible School Male Quartet. Not only have these tours been a blessing to the Assemblies visited but also to the hearts of those whose privilege it was to go. Doreen v Norman, Roy, Ken, Ben Ben, Ken, Glen Ben Bob, Ken, Freddie Bible Institute— - 43 - Mappy jHour Bible Clubs Happy Hour Bible Clubs have become a very vital part of our Bible School train¬ ing. How we praise God for what has been done, not only in the hearts of boys and girls, but also in the hearts of the students taking part. Each week clubs are held at Eston, Eatonia, Elrose and Brock. A leader is ap¬ pointed for each club and we do thank the Lord for those that have the burden on their hearts of reaching boys and girls with the gospel story. Happy Hour Rallies are held at the end of each semester giving the parents and others interested an opportunity to see and hear just what the children are learning. Pray for this effort to “Reach tomor¬ rows’ adults today”. 44 Full Gospel The Night the South . . . Be careful little eyes, what you see! Full Gospel Bible Institute : 47 : Dauh-h-h! Classes were conducted each day from 2-4 and 6:30-8 p.m., climaxed each evening by Visual Demonstrations, films and a chal¬ lenge from God ' s Word. We trust the S.S. Challenge will remain and grow in the heart of each student. C. K. Mitchell - and Views I was talking to a preacher just the other day. He was discussing with me the most effective way To rescue lost, sin-sick souls, from their eternal ruin, For both of us were agreed, that Christ is coming soon. Seek to win the adults, who are bound by sin , said he, Don ' t waste time with kids, who should be trained at mother ' s knee. In these last and closing days a fellow is a fool To go and spend precious time with kids in Sunday School ”. I said, I agree, home is where a child should be taught: But where do parents teach them, the Bible as they ought? What about homes where parents in sinful pathways trod? What about homes where parents do not read the Word of God? Children are seldom taught about Christ at home or school. And i ' n church our sermons don’t reach children as a rule, When parents don ' t have their children to the Saviour won, It ' s time that we take the torch and see the job is done. Each week for a child, 25 hours to school is sent, Seven hours eating, 70 hours in bed is spent. This should make us realize, how precious is the worth Of an hour spent in Sunday School, with the best Book on earth. When there are no Sunday Schools, it is to our sorrow, For today ' s Sunday School is the church of tomorrow. From it come our church members, 75 percent, And most missionaries, who to foreign lands are sent. There ' s a man of the F.B.I., J. Edgar Hoover, Who proves a Sunday School is a great crime remover. Ninety-eight percent of children trained in Sunday Schools Don’t end up in crime courts for breaking the country’s rules. In these closing days of time, to be a soul winner, We can through reaching kids, reach the home of a sinner. So I beli ' eve that we must reach children with the Word, As lambs are to the shepherd, children are to the Lord . Then that preacher looked at me, a gleam came in his eye. He said, To start a Sunday School, I think that I will try, Thanks for the exhortation; you ' ve made me realize That children are important, regardless of the size”. -RON HOOPER. 50 : Full Gospel Visitors to J.Cf.tfJ. The Alumni Association includes as members all graduates of the Full Gospel Bible Institute, and of the former Apostolic Missionary Train¬ ing Institute of Saskatoon. Associate members are those who, although not completing the three-year course to graduation, have been students in either Bible School. This is indeed a large family”, and one that in a very marked way owes much to the School. Those of us who have spent several winters studying the Word of God under the sound ministry of our excellent teaching faculty are aware of the tremendous impres¬ sion that has been made on our lives. We are all deeply convinced as to the value of Bible School training, and wish, as a great body of young men and women, to join our voices in heartily endorsing F.G.B.I. as a training centre worthy of your confidence and fullest support. To every young person looking for the Will of God in your life — consider Bible School first. Before you take that nurse’s training—or University—or Business College —seriously ask yourself if it might not be the Lord’s will for you to come to F.G.B.I. and receive a training that will be a solid founda¬ tion for your later life. We look forward to welcoming you into our Alumni fellowship. j£m SLA - Bible Institute 53 Foard of ; ' Directors G. P. BAILEY W. S. JOHNSTON Chairman Vice-Chairman Eston, Sask. Eston, Sask. A. D.
