UPERI TE DE T - PRINCIPAL Danxel W Alvlno Educatlon Now Getting Proper Recognition A very few years ago headllnes 1n the news rarely mcluded anythlng regardmg educatlon How ever ln recent months the entzre plcfure has changed wherem lt IS now nearly 1mposs1b1e to p1ck up a dally paper WlIh0UI bemg deluged wxth news of educatxonal developments Many radlo and telev1s1on programs emphaslze the lmportance of educatlon ln our present day l1VlI'lg It IS qulte d1ff1cult to llsten to any group dls cussxon regardlng educatlon without hearmg heated remarks about why our students are or are not, as well prepared as European students why Johnny can or cannot read what we are gomg to do about overcrowded classrooms, teachers salaries, ln creased budgets and what we plan to do to catch up w1th the Russlans Some people have shown alarm over the wxde areas of dlsagreement that have become evldent 1n these dlscusslons They are afraxd that w1th all the d1ffer1ng polnts of VIEW put forth, a state of confu s1on w1ll arxse and that consequently no actlon w1ll be taken to change, or 1mprove our school system Thls IS where they are wrong The mxllnons of volces belng ralsed today 1n behalf of educatlon d1scordant as they are at txmes w1ll supply the necessary 1mpetus to get somethlng done at last lt IS clear that some changes are necessary lf we are to revltallze our schools Experlments and ln novattons will be trled ln an effort to catch up 1n educatxon The good from our present system w1ll be retamed and comblned wlth these newly proved theorles The challenge of modern tlmes w1ll besuccess fully met provxded that lay cmzens educators and admmxstrators keep up thexr enthusxasm , .
