0 Pain, o Gain The smell of fresh cut grass enters your nostrils as you trudge over the school lawn. In the distance is heard the constant drone of the coachs voice urging you ong higher harder, faster. Inside your mind you're toying with the idea of stopping, or perhaps just slow- ing up a bit. Yet you know slowing down means quit- ting and that quitting means forfeiting all your person- al goals and expectations. You understand the com- mitment you made to the school and to the team, but more importantly the one to yourself to become the best you can ever hope to be. You know that with each step you struggle through now, it will become easier and easier the next time. You find truth in the old saying, No Pain, No Gainv. Ah! Truer words were never spoken! When it comes to sports at Frontier, students are constantly reminded of this saying by never-say-die coaches. From cross country run- ning and swimming to soccer, volleyball, tennis and football its always the same according to the coaches - to produce winners, you must first make them suffer through some pain! The pain comes in a variety of forms, but it all seems to have the same effect if it is inflicted properly. Through miles of hills, lengths in the pool, soccer drills, and football tackles emerge new beings as lazy summer bodies are broken down then remolded into strong, determined athletes once again. Why do they do it? Nothing can compare to the feeling of knowing that the extra effort, that last little binge of pain, really made a difference and helped the team succeed. lt has been quite an honor to Frontier to have such dedicated and talented athletes represent them at many sectionals and improve our school is record. But oh, what students go through to reach these levels. by Rodney Will and Susan Kelleher mit - ...K ' i a
