Answer: Yes and no, some students attitudes have changed primarily because of the change in attitude of society. Such as the dif- ferent freedoms, liberties and new laws. One example of a change in attitude is the misinterpretation of the new mari- juana act. Gateway: What are your goals for this school year? Answer: Recent legislation and new mandates from the State Educa- tion Department have made increased demands of my time. Consequently, I have had much of my pupil and teacher 10 contact time severly reduced. It is my intent during the next few months to reorganize my responsibilities and re-establish priorities so that I can be more visible and accessible to stu- dents and teachers. One of my primary functions is to im- prove school climate and improve instruction. This can be more effectively done by being in the trenches . Gateway: What are some of your outside interests? Answer: I am president of the Erie County Interscholastic Con- ference which consists of thirty schools. I am also Executive Officer of the Central Committee of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and the president of the Frontier Central Curriculum Council. Gateway: Are there any sports or hobbies outside of school work that you participate in? Answer: I like to golf, swim, fish, run, read, bowl, play softball and volleyball and party. I like music - such as rock and jazz , my privacy and being active in clubs. But my greatest hobby is meeting other people. Assistant Principal Gateway: Mr. Grottanelli, have students attitudes changed over the past few years? Answer: Students attitudes haven't changed much over the years, but they have become more dependable and responsible, we have a good bunch of students. Gateway: Have disciplinary problems increased or decreased? Answer: They have increased only because we have more students and a smarter group. Question: What are your goals for this school year? Answer: To help the students and teachers achieve their goals. Question: What are some of your outside interests? Are there any sports or hobbies that you participate in, other than school related activities? Answer: 'LI like motor cycling, snowmobiling, and golfing. I also do chores around the house and I like working on engines. Mr. Serofino Grottanelli 1 1 Mrs.E. Hagen Bottom L-R: D. Lucarelli, Mr. D. Salmon. The English Department is constantly changing to keep up with the needs of our ever changing language. The course of study in the 10th and 11th grades is a mixture of grammar, composition, speaking, reading skills, and literature, both American and British respectively, to provide the student with the fundamentals for communication in our busy world, while 12th grade is a combination of both skill and literature-onented electives to enable the student to pur- sue his own interest in the study of our language. ,,Q,szwvww ...V Wig. Reaching from Modern World History and American Studies into Economics and Sociology, the student is exposed to many cultures besides our own as well as an depth look at the capitalistic system. This year the department has in- troduced Psychology as an elective which endeavors to aid the student in learning more about his own behavior and that of others. p Social Studies 19 Foreign Language The foreign language department offers Frontier students a great variety of language courses. In ad- dition to a regular sequence in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Latin, and Polish, students can enroll in one semester conversation courses in any of the above languages. Why study a foreign language - it's fun! To enable a student to acquire a sound knowledge of the essentials of both spoken and written language. To help the student attain mastery of the idiom so that he can carry on conver- sations with native speakers. To help the student develop reading skill. To help him improve his ability to learn the meaning of unfamiliar words in context and use them intelligen- tly and correctly. To motivate the student to develop proficiency in writing correctly in order that he may become com- petent enough to continue his education in languages beyond the secondary level. Top L-R: A. Scczesny, M. Costello. 2nd: A. Car- ducci, A Harrington. Goals of the Business Dept. The aims and objectives of the business department are of a general and particular nature. In a genral way we attempt to contribute to the broad education of all pupils by providing ade- quate business and economic information, and to provide vocational competency for qualified and interested pupils. Our goal is to provide these pupils with the skills, understandings and attitudes necessary for success in a business occupation. In a more particular way we attempt to meet the needs of the boys and girls who intend to enter office or store employment immediately after graduation from high school, or who wish to take advantage of further business training in business or technical schools. It is possible for a student to receive vocational training which will enable him or her to achieve com- petence as a secretary, bookkeeper, clerical worker or retail salesman. The business curriculum also offers opportunities for the nonvocational minded student who might be college bound or have other pursuits in mind through the personal use subjects offered. More advanced courses such as Algebra, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Trigonometry and Advanced Algebra are offered. Full year regent credit bearing Home Economics 1, 2, and 3 supplemented by Home Economics 10 and 11, as well as Independent Living, are offered to both boys and girls of Frontier. Learning to reproduce the tantalizing smells and tastes that frequently wait through the halls, to design and make clothing, and to use to best advantage such items as electronically ignited gas ranges, microwave ovens, sewing machines and automatic washers and dryers, are only a small sampling of the workings behind the door leading to the wonderful world of Home Economics. al Education Top L-R: P. German Club - Guten Tag Wir Sprechen deutsch This year the German Club took part in a number of different activities. We entered a float in the Homecoming Parade, sold bake goods and had candy sales which helped pay for some of the activities. We plan to take part in the Foreign Language Club's Dinner, which will take place around the Christmas holidays and will be opened to the public. During the holidays we also will sing at a local retire- ment home. In January, the German Club will be dancing and singing at the Lorlei Club. This program will also be opened to the public. During the spring we are plan- ning an ovemight trip to the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Polish Club ROW 1: Witald Czyz, P. Commerford, J. Hemandez, R. Zak, J. Oleniacz, A. Szczesny. ROW 2: G. Under the excellent leadership of its officers, the Polish Club at Frontier had a very busy year. A WIGILIA Christmas meal, and a SWIECONKA Easter celebration, with traditional foods and enter- tainment were very well attended by our students and members of our community. Many field trips to see Polish activities presented in Western New York were included. SIASK, a folk dancing group from Poland, the Polish National Acrobatic Team, Cabaret Theater presentations, Polish Community Center productions and others. Our participation in the Homecom- ing parade resulted in a special award. Many prizes were received at the Foreign Language Day Competitions at St. Bonaventure Univer- sity. Polish traditional foods, slides on Poland and folksongs made up a special program presented to the senior citizens at Senior Medows and St. Anthony's by the members of the Polish Club. Once again this year Polish Club members will spend the month of July in Poland. Indeed - this was a very good year! DZIEKUJEMY and DO ZOBACZENIA 114 Spanish Club pq Q rr. We, the members of this year's Spanish Club are enjoying a great variety of activities. We began this year's homecom- ing with our grant taco float that kept us very busy. 5El flamenco! What a concert! Many of us had never experi- enced this kind of music and dancing before. And then La Navidad - Christmas and our International Dinner - cooking all kinds of things that some of us had never eaten. Las Pascuas - Easter - We find ourselves in the country with the language we have been studying. Everyone seems to be talking so fast. Where's my dictionary? There are so many places to see and things to do. We return home -just in time - it seems - para sufrir los examenes - and our year is over - where did the year go - oh, well! Until next year. Tom Hesketh, who was named All Tournament at the Christmas Tournament, averaged 12.7 points per game: and Ken Augustyniakaveraged 12.4 points per game. In addition to averaging 12.3 points per game, Mike Staruch played outstanding defense. Mike holds both of the School Rebounding Records for this season. He holds the record for most re- bounds in one game with 30, and the sea- son record pulling down 281. The J.V. Basketball Team finished their 1978-1979 season with a 2-14 overall record. Unfortunately, their record does not tell what an action packed season the Junior Falcons had. Six of their losses were real tear jerkers.
