Producing a yearbook is a very strenuous undertaking, and THE 1978 GATEWAY is no exception. It is the product of many tedious hours spent in organizing layouts, planning pictures, and writing and rewriting copy in order to tell the story of an eventful year at Frontier. In September the call went out for volunteers to work on THE GATEWAY, and soon a sizeable staff was gathered together every day to do the many jobs essential to producing a yearbook. From early September until late February, members of the Gateway staff could be found after school with Mr. Kerr or Miss Lyons, the faculty advisors, dejectedly examining scattered layouts, senior credit sheets, and mounds of crumpled papers as they were busy at their assigned tasks. Besides the editorial staff, mem- bers of the Public information Club supervised by Mr. Bailey worked diligently writing and rewriting copy to help achieve a worthwhile publication. FRONT: D. Well it has. ln order to keep the price for students down, THE GATEWAY Business Staff organizes and runs an annual magazine sale. The profits of the sale are used to defray the retail price of the book. THE GATEWAY Business Staff is headed by Colleen Russell, THE GATEWAY treasurer. She could be found after school any day during the magazine sale and the yearbook presale with her shoes and socks off, counting fingers and toes, trying to make the books balance. Colleen was helped greatly this year by her staff: Beth Barnack, Carmen Scoma, and Cathy Tojek. ROW 1: L. Levindolfske, L. Cascio. ROW 2: M. Maroone, Gateway Staff Business Staff K. Knapp, N. Public Information Club The idea of a Public information Club was first mentioned by several members ofthe student body during the 1974-1975 school year. This idea became a reality in September of 1975. During the past three years, the club has not only doubled its membership: ithas also doubled the realm of its responsibility. The club itself is broken down into a number of committees: The Executive Committee, which is made up of the Club's officers, is responsible for setting Club Policy and establishing the procedures and guidelines the committees must follow. lt is up to this committee to decide whether or not the Club will take on any additional tasks asked of the Club. The Newspaper Committee takes the pictures and gathers the informa- tion for articles seen in the HAMBURG SUN, the FRONT PAGE, the BUF- FALO COURIER EXPRESS, and the BUFFALO EVENING NEWS. The Calendar Committee publishes and distributes a monthly calendar, which lists all the events scheduled to take place in the High School during the month. This committee is also responsible for listing the month's impor- tant happenings on the Bill Board in the bus loop, weather permitting. The Publicity Committee works with other clubs at Frontier to help them publicize their activities. This committee helped the Music Club with their Musical, the Polish Club with their Christmas Dinner, the Drama Club with their Play, the French Club with their Mardi Gras, and the Swim Club with their Water Ballet. The Scrapbook Committee works much like a historian. This Committee keeps a scrapbook in which there is a log of the Club's activities. Clippings of the various articles placed in the newspapers can also be found in the scrapbook. The Typewriting Committee is the backbone of the organization. Mem- bers of this committee receive all the information from the other commit- tees, collate the information, and make the final copy for distribution. Finally we have the Yearbook Committee. The Yearbook Committee writes and rewrites the outlines for this publication. ROW 1: D. Crawford, M. Leard, M. Allen ROW 2: N. Gjurich, N. Winkowski, N. Kepfer C. Hale, L. Peluso, A. Beckett, M. The most striking was the New Banner and the true newspaper format. The Hilites has been strengthened by the addition of various departments. A Club Department helps to ex- plain the activities of the many organizations around school. The Feature Department reports on the various happenings around school that the student body would not otherwise know about. Mr. Bailey, the faculty advisor, has tried to turn the paper into a valuable asset of the students. The main function of the paper is not just to entertain but to in- form and even educate. This is done by complete coverage of school news, the addition of the various departments and the inclusion of students' creative work. It is the hope of this year's Hilites Staff that their paper has not only pleased the faculty and the stu- dents, but also has added in some way to their im- provement and to the improvement of the school. Who else but a group of students known as F.E.S.O. They do most of the unseen work behind a presentation in the auditorium. They place microphones, tend to lighting, and occasionally make their presence known by moving the podium and the chairs across the stage during an assembly. That fellow who runs the projector, operates the spots, or snaps switches in the back of the auditorium during our assemblies is one of them. Members of F.E.S.O. do most of the unseen work behind an audio-visual presentation in one of your classes. They deliver any needed audio-visual equipment, make sure the equipment is in operating condition, run the equipment if necessary, and help Mrs. Prusak schedule and run the television tapes. F.E.S.O. members are also responsible for the unseen work behind the scenes at many of our athletic events. They run the clock, help with the announcing, and run the camera during the foot- ball season. They also do the announcing and run the video tape for basketball and wrestling. F.E.S.O. is truly a service organization. In general its members work behind the scenes, and come out of their little cell only occasionally to receive a well-deserved applause. i Students at Frontier no longer can use the standard alibi, I forgot my pen, or I don't have any paper. The store which carries a full line of school supplies, paperbacks, and Falcon Fashions , is now open from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. five days a week. S As a social club, the Spanish Club attented OLLANTAY at Villa Maria College, t. Bonaventure Language Day, and Fiestas put on by the members of the Club. Polish Club ROW 1: J. Jarmolek, S. The ability of a community to transfer its language and culture is vital to the continued existence of that com- munity. Movements to areas outside the historical neighborhoods of their culture has made such a transfer all the more difficult. One way of passing on a language and culture of a people is through formal education and clubs like the Polish Club. Frontier Polish Club has been especially successful in making Frontier students of Polish extraction proud of their ancestral language and heritage. The students have developed a deepened appreciation of their roots. The efforts and accomplishments of the Polish Club have been publicized greatly throughout the Hamburg area, through the local media. Other students, neighbors and friends of non-Polish background, both in school and out of school have been made aware of things Polish and Polish American in a more accurate light than many of them are accustomed to. This year's Polish Club is busier than ever. To further foster a greater understanding of the language, customs, and traditions of Poland, the Polish Club, along with the Volleyball Team, is working very hard to raise enough money for a trip to Poland during the summer. The trip will consist of tours and volleyball games. The Club started the school year selling candy bars during the last two weeks of September. During the month of October, they were preparing a float for the Homecoming Parade. November was spent making plans for their Polish Christmas Festival Dinner. On December 14, the Club held their sell-out dinner. They had to turn away about 350 reservations because of a lack of ac- comodations. Members of the Club also made their an- nual appearance to Senior Meadows and St. Anthony's Nursing Homes to sing Christmas Carols to the residents in Polish. Other fund raising events are planned by the Club for the remainder of the year. We hope that these events are as successful as the events that have already taken place. Furthermore, we hope that their dream of a trip to Poland becomes a reality. O2 French Club ROW 1: D. Woodling, D. Schirf, Y. Wheaton, P. Valois, S. Plarr. ROW 2: Miss Harrington, L. Lemek, N. The French Club like all other language clubs at Frontier is both a social club and an educational club designed to supplement classroom instruction. The French Club helps to foster a greater understanding of the various French dialects, customs of French speaking people around the world, and the tradition of the various French speaking countries. Instead of the traditional trip to Paris, the members of the French Club voted this year to go to the island of Martinique, in the Caribbean. To raise money for the trip, the club sold food in the wiener wagon at the football game, held pizza sales, candy sales, an election day bake good sale, a Mardi Gras, and an Easter candy sale. Among the social activities held this year by the club were parties, get togethers, and the annual trips to Senior Meadows Rest Home and St. Anthony's Rest Home for the Aged for Christmas carole sing along. German Club The German Club, another language club sponsored by our outstanding language department, is also both a Social and Educational group. The primary aim of the club is to foster a greater understanding of the language customs and traditions of Germany. With funds collected throughout the year the German Club planned the trip to Toronto, with the possibility of help- ing some students who wish to travel to Dortmund as part of the Buffalo-Dortmund Sister City Agreement with West Ger- many. ln order for the club to make its trip a reality, the clubs ac- tivities included many fund raisers. Its first major event wasg Oktoberfest held on October 21. Next the club sold Gummi Bears, a chewy German candy which had the entire school body hooked . The clubs social calendar included parties, get togethers, a modern Foreign Language Volleyball Tournament. Foreign Language Day at St. Bonaventure and a German high school night held on May 6 at club Lorelei in Hamburg. ROW 1: T. Nasca, C. Eich, K. Braymiller, S. Voss, S. Scanlon M. Briggs, Fl. Kuhn, F. Most everyone likes to see a good musical or play, but very few people realize the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. When plans are made for the musical or play, who are the experts who assist in carrying out these plans? Who else but a group of students known as the stage crew. It is this group that does most of the unseen work behind the production. While the members of the cast are busy learning their lines and rehearsing their parts, members of the stage crew can be found hammering, sawing, and painting the sets. Their work, however, does not stop here. During the actual production these students can be found making scene changes, placing props, and taking care of last minute details. , In general, the members of the stage crew work behind the scenes. They come out of their little cell only oc- casionally at the end of a production or when called to have their picture taken for the yearbook to receive a well deserved round of applause. So, applause please! 117 as-l Lionel Bart's popular Broadway Musical, OLIVER , was presented in three performances by the Frontier High School Music Club, November 17, 19,'and 20. Yes, these were familiar words on the lips of our cheerleaders and fans several years ago at the various Frontier athletic events. We still have the coach and the team, but the pep and the steam have been waning recently. To remedy this situation, several members of the student body formed the Pep Club. This club works on a Stimulus-Response Theory. The stimulus takes the form of projects designed to incite stu- dent enthusiasm. Members of the club can be found on any school day painting and hanging signs around the building advertising the coming sporting events. The stimulus also takes the form of a group of enthusiastic students cheering their hearts out at the various athletic events. When the other spectators see this group of stu- dents having such a good time, the desired response is for them to join in. The Pep Club is more than a fun club: it is also a service club. ln addition to cheering and having fun, members also work at the games. They handle ticket sales, ticket collections, program sales, and the sale of novelty items such as buttons, banners, and balloons designed to raise school spirit. Varsity Club l SEATED: J. Kuczka, D. Maria Tundo, the squad's co-captain, was awarded a membership application in the N.C.A. for her abilities. Yes, these are familiar words on the lips of our cheerleaders. Under the direction of Mrs. Molly Dee and Miss Anne Harrington, the enthusiasm and sparkling appearance of the cheerleading squad has been kept at a high level. Every year when the cheerleading clinic is announced, dozens of hopefuls arrive and faithfully practice all of the routines. Then they perform before the judges and the most agile are chosen for the squads. There is more to cheerleading than a role of glory. The girls are present at all the foot- ball games and most of the other athletic events as well. Like the postman, the weather does not discourage them from making their appointed round. Many long and strenuous hours of practice are needed to develop a co-ordinated squad. Practice continues throughout the year. The cheerleaders devote much of their leisure time to cheering their fellow students on to victory at all of the games. All in all, our cheerleaders perform a very real service to the school, and we appreciate their efforts. 127 Varsity Football ROW 1: D. Walters, B. Starkweather, J. Strawbrich, K. Siska, J. Each Saturday finds hundreds of Students, many parents, and numerous faculty members winding their way towards the stadium where Frontier is playing to cheer the Falcons to victory. Some of this school spirit must be credited to Mr. Ortner and the Marching Band, who play at all the home games. They make every other school sit up and take notice that Frontier is present. Their spirited playing coupled with the lively cheering led by our vivacious cheerleaders makes the game an exciting experience. Despite the gallery's loyalty, however, and the fine coaching of Mr. Schaler, Mr. Baker, and Mr. Biersbach, plus the efforts put forth by the team, Frontier finished the season with a 3-4-1 record.
