We live in an age in which the word travel is a significant one, indeed, a magic one. The benefits which accrue from travel are infinite - we come, we see, we conquer with our eyes and minds. The time honored book is still a very potent source of educa- tion. However, the improvement in transpor- tation has given us an effective supplement. We of 1961 have lived to see a shrink- ing globe, a world in which the other Conti- nents become our neighbors. This closeness has been further accentuated by the intro- duction of iet travel. America's .let fleet has stimulated travel from both the business and the vacation angle. Travel is a vital part of education. It widens our mental horizons, by enabling us to come into contact with, and to appreciate other areas, many of them very far away places. The traveler is shaken out of his pro- vincialism. He becomes aware of other cus- toms and different religions. He also be- comes acquainted with other coinage systems. He fully realizes then, that while people may be very different from him, they are not nec- essarily inferior. In a highly personal and individual way our A. F. S. Exchange Student Program has brought home to us at Frontier the full signif- icance of travel. Indonesia formerly was, to most of us, merely a place on the map. How- ever, after the arrival of Anwari, an Exohange student, Frontier students felt much closer to Indonesia. Several Frontier students have had the opportunity to live in other lands for a period of time. They returned with wider horizons, greater respect for different cultures and a deeper understanding of these cultures. Tremendous mutual benefits result from such exchanges. The American Field Service, with its Exchange program, has enabled these students to make a vital, personal contribu- tion to mutual understanding in this world. The A. F.S. has applied the word travel in a truly constructive manner - pointing the way by which world understanding and, eventu- ally, world peace, can be attained.
