Crowds can be many things to many people. They may seem noisy, vague, hostile, vulgar, or enthusiastic, energetic and constructive-accord- ing to the point of view of the person who is appraising them. Many times this appraisal is colored by the optimism or the pessimism, or the cynicism or even the ignorance of the spectator, and the tre-nd of the times. One thing is certain: wherever there is a crowd assembled, something very appealing, or exciting, or powerful has brought the group together. We are always conscious of motivation, urge or drive when we observe a crowd. Whenever we think of crowds, we think also of the leaders who shine through the mass of people. Henry Van Dyke said, lndividuality is the salt of common life. You may have to live in a crowd, but you do not have to like it, not subsist on its food. The leaders in each group have definite personality-personality which dis- tinguishes them from others. They possess a sense of leadership, yet the ability to obey orders. They display an air of certainty, yet they are willing to admit their mistakes. Such leaders usually have an optimistic outlook on life. They make it pos- sible for these individuals to remain in the crowd, realize their respective ambitions, and thus retain their own personality and individuality. Individuals in a crowd contribute ideas, pool their knowledge, and thus accomplish infinitely more than one or two people isolated from others who have similar ability and interest. School population may appear to be a formless mass. However, as activities evolve there appear certain personalities who supply direction and de- termine progress. Much of this direction comes from the faculty, but much leadership also comes from the students themselves. Student leadership manifests itself in academic endeavors, in sport programs, and in social activities. This suggests that personalities do, indeed, shine through crowds! ,fx 9 ' 1 . , pn. . J 55.
