Within these walls, a thread runs true be- tween these students that develops the resources of the school to the advantage of everyone. The students enter gems in the rough and leave well-polished jewels. As the jeweler cuts gems to perfection so the school and its resources bring the student to a point as near perfect as pos- sible. The emeralds to be found in our library in- crease our knowledge. The pearls that develop culture are art and music. The athletic ruby de- velops soundness of body and sportsmanship. The sapphire of clubs, parties, and dances build our self-confidence. Our school, the diamond, most per- fect jewel creates in each of us a well balanced per- son, with a sense of pride in his school. 2 Q QWT EYKT S Suiperinbendenbk Message 4 Adminisbrationb Qrsonnel 5 Se-niors I7 Classes 13 Activities 63 Sports 77 Auxiliary 89 f.1',, ','Af'.t3-:i,j.a'-,:.t' Y ,S ,-35-f. .55 1 3-3-Q.-ll'-, Z.q.' 3.4 ills I f.' fl' . gf .'i .- ..l 1-' -' , DEVELOPING OUR SCHOOL RESOURCES: just as the greatest asset of any community is its people, so you, the students of the Frontier Central School are our greatest resource. There are many influences which will affect your development. Your parents and home, the church, and the school each play a different role in your growth. From your parents you derive the benefit of love and affection and your habits of loyalty and personality, The church not only teaches you to live beyond yourself helping others but teaches love of God and respect for things eternal. The public school has the responsibility to help you learn to work, think, and contribute according to your ability. S The faculty of the Frontier Central School can build only upon the foun- dation laid by the home and the church. It is our purpose to provide every opportunity for you to attain your highest potential that you, in turn, may serve others as they have served you. ERNEST H. One of the most precious resources of our Frontier educational system has been the development of the minds of our student population, from our kindergarten grades through our senior high school. We, with pride feel that with the facilities we now have, we can develop and expand these resources in the future into various channels that will be of untold value. The accomplishment of all our aims and ambitions, can be brought about only by the united efforts of every- one in our school district. May the parents, students, faculty and members of the Board of Education conscientiously unite and co-operate to bring about a rich harvest. gag, QU, X404 X ff John w. L ake View John Kleis, President 0-Principal In the future at Frontier, we can foresee our Auditorium stage accommodating a Shakespearean Drama or a rousing Modern Comedy, a fine Band and Orchestra. I see our Prac- tical Arts Department expanding and growing stronger year by year. Our Athletic program will come into its own and many more activities will be organized. At this point, you may say, what about the academic subjects? Aren't they going to be taught any more? You can be certain they will not be discarded and the range of subjects available will be far greater than they are today. All that will be necessary to enjoy these activities and subjects, will be an open mind and a willingness to learn to master them. Frontier will grow strong and sturdy and make her stu- dents outstanding citizens of the community in which they live. Maw-'ft W 1 . ,aawfwfw-'4 'W Mr. C, Buesch - Co-Principal Imtmction Mr. Heiman - C0-Principal Adminirtmzion American ingenuity has been able to take our natural resources and step by step produce efficient, untiring indus- trial giants who are always willing and ready to serve man- kind. In the same manner AMERICAN EDUCATION is producing this ingenuity. American youth, the greatest of our school resources, is being taken step by step through our educational institutions and is thus being prepared to better serve itself by more fully realizing its responsibility to its fellowmen. Only through a FREE, UNITED, EDUCATED citizentry, can this be accomplished. It is the American Way, the way that makes men, who have made, and who will continue to make, Our United States the greatest Nation on earth. 7 Miss Creedon-jr. High Principal Long ago Cicero asked, What greater or better gift can we offer the re- public than to teach and instruct our youth? Frontier Central with its variety of opportunities of- fered to students, and its outstanding appointments surely affords a way for each student to develop his talents and to take his place in our treasured demo- cracy. Mr. Morgenfeld-Sr. High Principal May we have the courage and vision to set be- fore ourselves the kind of school we want Frontier Central to be, and the strength to reach these aims. PRINCIPALS AND GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT A Guidance Counselor encourages students: To in- vestigate all cateers, carefullyg To choose high school courses wiselyg To prepare daily work thoroughlyg To insure themselves of a successful future. Miss Titus - Guidance Education is either your most durable or your most perishable resource. A day wasted can never be regained, but a day well spent will forever pay dividends in increased earnings and personal useful- ness. Mr. Mandel, Guidance Director . i l 8 Mr. Dunklin - Tmmportation Each student should so budget the school day that there will be a proper balance between class- room study, school activities' and recreation. Each is important but, when pursued at the expense of the others, can result in disappointments. Francis J. Manley-Co-ordimzlor of Imzructzmz The value of a commodity is measured in direct proportion to the amount of man hours used in bringing the commodity to a complete and useful product. Education can be measured by the same yard- stick. TRANSPORTATION - ELEMENTARY EDUCATION, CHILD ACCOUNTING ADULT WHATEVER IS WORTH DOING AT AL1. IS WORTH DOING WELL! This quotation was written ,on our Fourth Grade blackboard by a wise teacher. School and blackboard, even the teacher are gone, but the lesson lingers on. Miss Pray - Child Afmmztmzz AND EDUCATION Our total educational program at Frontier in- cludes experiences for adults as well as boys and girls. ' The wealth of facilities offered by a great vari- ety of specially designed rooms with appropriate equipment make it possible to offer the adults of our community many worthwhile experiences lead- ing toward educational advancement. V . I 7 . Class Hi tory The days of kindergarten were far behind us all now, for we entered our first year of high school at last and we all were enthused about what lay ahead. Our first activity at 'Woodlawn High School was a class party. We were well acquainted by this time. Judy Rush was elected our Freshman class president. Many of our classmates participated in the Freshman sports and eagerly looked forward to varsity competition. Roger Gaydon was elected class president at Blasdell. Committees were busy planning a reverse dance, their first class activity. Christmas came so swiftly and soon all of us were busily planning for our Christmas programs. Mr. Grortanelli was Santa Claus at Blasdell. The winter months quickly passed. Soon it was spring and the students at Woodlawn began planning for their first dance. It was called The Leprechaun Leap, for St. Pat's Day was well at hand. Amidst the turmoil, we steadied ourselves for more exams. Picnic time rolled around and we were prepared. We'll never forget the fun we had hiking and enjoying ourselves. Our first year at Woodlawn and Blas- dell was climaxed by the moving up day ceremonies and senior graduation. We looked forward to the summer recess and were quite relieved after exams. Now it was one down and three more to go. 4 September rolled around once more and we commenced into our second year. We all resumed work a little faster, for we were well acquainted with the procedure. The students at Woodlawn elected Ronald Nistler as their class president and joe DeMatteo was elected by the Blasdell class. Several assemblies were enjoyed by both classes at Woodlawn and Blasdell. We all enjoyed a wonderful performance by a clown, Happy Daze, who in comical sketches, showed us how to choose our careers wisely. Another assembly was given by a group of servicemen, consisting of a comical skit and a description of the armed forces for the benefit of the male students. The fall quickly passed into winter. Christmas soon came and so did vacation, right into January. The Woodlawn class planned a dance at the end of exam week hoping every- one would enjoy a good time after the exams. All the students hoped for snow to make the dance, The Snowflake Swirl, seem more authentic. The snow came, in fact we were snowed in. Blasdell had their dance, The Snowball Swirl, the same evening, and along with two dances, the same night a sectional basketball game was played. Prom time rolled around and this, of course, was the social event of the year. Moving- up Day soon followed, as did our joyful class picnics, bringing to a close another year of fond memories. 1 . 1 I' 4-151' f' 7--'MN . y 3, ,i,x5 :f?0,f I I ffrz lv 5 -- , ff 'elif ll .L-1 F- fe- 1 if ' A. x , A ' f 4- ft T4 5 f X LK uklxxy Q3elal6I6 'E K7 Q4 CLASS HISTORY qmfimmzp As September again came, we found ourselves in a wonderful new school. There S' were many handicaps. Being a combined group for the first time we all entered vari- ous activities, moreover, it was now a challenge to plan events together as one group. We all looked forward to many wonderful and exciting school days in the school. Michael Andrisani was elected our junior class president. We were soon hard at work and enjoying ourselves and sponsored our first class activity, a dance The Teen-Age Swing. The music was recorded and an Elvis Presley record was given away as a door prize. Our sports schedule proceeded and many of the students witnessed many thrilling events. Our first year at the new school went by rapidly. The climax we were planning for was the Junior-Senior prom. It was a success and everyone had a won- derful time. We have finally reached our goal, Seniors. This was our last year in high school and we planned to make it one of the most exciting and eventful years of lall. Our first class activity was that of electing Senior class officers. Bill Mabie was elected president, jim Schill as vice-president, Pat Wiencek as treasurer, Judy Rush as secre- tary, and Sue Mabie as class historian. Elections for the Student Council officers were held. Each of the candidates presented their program during the assembly. Kathy X if xx S ik' rx N. X R ff: 4 -V -1 '-2 - T: rf ,fyi H ? if . , f ep... Everyone enjoyed the Soda Pop Hop. After much ' If deliberation, we chose our class ring, and the majority of the students purchased rings. 'S - The taking of Senior Class pictures proved to be an enjoyable activity. Before the Christmas recess, the yearbook was well on its way. Leonard Burroughs and Barbara ' M Hartman were appointed as co-editors of the yearbook. Many of the students worked 513, l f feverishly on the book. Miss Songer, our senior English teacher, directed the Senior , Qi ' f play, a most exciting project. The entire cast worked hard and opening performance , proved to be a wonderful success. Many activities again filled in some of the empty , 1. 2 in spaces on the schedule cards. Many students joined the newly formed Latin Club, 'Q Mike Club, and Water Ballet group. We all again worked hard for the success of the 2 ,2 f junior-Senior Prom. Comittees planning for decorations and other various items - X tj found themselves with much to be done. These preparations proved to be wonderful ffl X' ' times spent with fellow classmates. The climax of our high school years approached '-I J, ' quickly. Graduation was held on June 24. All of our activities of the preceding four years will linger as very wonderful and fond memories. We now begin life's journey p along many different paths. The Jun- ior class treasury was increased by the payment of dues by members of the class. The biggest event for the juniors this year was their participation in the annual junior - Senior Prom. The most significant issue was the question of ordering rings at the end of the Jun- ior year so they could be Worn during their Senior year. As juniors, some members of the class were eligible for membership in the National Honor Society. The Nocturnes, a band formed by four juniors, performed at a school dance entitled Hearts Holiday. Their class and Frontier as a Whole are proud of them. Juniors are contemplat- ing the future very seriously and next year will be very important to them. ROOM 127 -MRS. STUDENT COUNCIL The purpose of the Student Council is to in- form the students as to what is being done for the student body. This is a form of a working student government. The Student Council representatives are elected from each homeroom. To become presi- dent the student must be a senior, have been in the Student Council for three years, and be a past officer. The Vice-President must have been a representative for two years, the secretary and treasurer must have been a representative for one year. The Student Council helpsto support the school teams by selling tickets for the games and by selling candy at the games. The proceeds are incorporated into a fund for buying new equipment and uniforms for the teams. Each morning over the public address system the student body is led in a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance by a Student Council representative On March 18, the Frontier Central Student Council entertained other Students Councils from nearby schools at their spring meeting. It required many committees who worked diligently to get the Gateway ready for the press. The committees included the photography staff, which helped the photographer take the pic- tures, sorted them and prepared them for publication. The copy staff wrote all the copy for the pages, wrote the foreword and the copy under the pictures. The typing of all the copy was done by the typing staff. The financial committee handled the subscriptions and the money coming from the sales. The art staff designed the cover, divider pages and all other art work for the Gateway The distribution and sales committee prompted the selling of the yearbook and distributed it after it came off the press. The yearbook was assembled and all the pages and pic- tures were properly measured by the make-up com- sf 5 ll mittee. The sports staff made up the sports section' 'PR and wrote copy for it. Through the combined ef- forts of all these groups, the Gateway became a reality. YEARBOOK PRODUCTION STAFF Back Roux Left to Righl: N. Sikes, H. Vogt, J. Stuber, D. Foit, W. Mabie, C. Westphal, G. NEWSPAPER An integral part of school life at Frontier is the school newspaper, Hi-Lites, published by a representative student group, under the direction of Mr. Pfohl. The paper is a monthly chronicle of school events and the official student organ. Several features proved very popular with students such as class activities, sport events, and student council news. Our newspaper staff is striving to make a bond between the students and faculty. The newspaper hopes to place in the hearts of each student an appreciation of our Alma Mater. Mr. T. S. Instruction in pointing out careless errors was given at a referee clinic held after school. It seemed to have been very successful, as many girls attended the classes. Not only did these students gain refereeing experience, but they gained added respect for their teachers. Instructors for the clinic were Miss Sally Brinssnaid, Buffalo State Teachers Col- legeg Miss Mary Lou Puleo, a teacher at Benjamin Franklin Junior High, Miss Annette Bettings, Kenmore Junior High teacher. They were representatives of the Association of Women Physical Education Teachers of New York State. GIRLS' BASKETBALL REFEREES Top Row, Left to Right: M. Bartula, S. Alguire, P. Cary, son, B. This new organization strives to bring these groups closer together. During the school year the parents are invited to visit the schoolrooms and discuss the progress of their child with his teachers. Last year the P.T.A. had a baked goods sale which proved to he a huge success. They also gave baskets to the poor and financed a seed sale. Football Frontier, hit hard by graduation last year, had only three lettermen returning this fall. The three lettermen: Gary Barber, Dick Doll, and George Maue, led a small squad to victory in the first game played on Frontier's new playing field against Eden. The rest of the season did not prove so good though and Frontier met defeat six times before the season was over. Many sophomores and juniors, however, gained valuable experience which will show in Frontier's future years. J. v. FOOTBALL Top Row, Left to Right: J. Abram, J. Pcionek, P. Goetz, J. Konttabecki, W. Our field is certainly beautiful and coaches from other schools have remarked on its adaptability for playing soccer. The varsity team was coached by Mr. Darvill and the junior varsity was headed by Mr. Gollwitzer. Since Ron Pajak, Bill Mabie, Jim Schill, Ron Nistler, Pete Schwartzott, Gene Graser, Pat Farley, and Carl Sickau are seniors this year, the squad will look to returning lettermen and upcoming freshmen and sophomores for next year's team. The varsity's final record this year was three wins and seven losses. Frontier played opposing teams in Section VI, which included North Collins, Holland, Williamsville, Amherst, and Gow School. The junior varsity squad also played the same teams. Their final record was four wins and five losses and one tie. Dieter Heinz, who was outstanding on junior varsity, was moved up to varsity for the last few games. The soccer teams have high hopes for next year. N J. V. SOCCER Top Row, Left to Right: R. In addition to fine sportsmanship and good playing ability our team has achieved praise-worthy records. The team's aggressiveness and deter- mination were shown in the double overtime loss C59-575 to Division I AA winner, Hamburg. Frontier, down by 13 points in the third quarter, fought back rigidly to gain a dead- lock at the end of regulation time, thus sending the game into overtime. Front- ier led in the first overtime 57-55 but Hamburg tied the score sending it into second death and thus won. Other highlights of the season were a fine victory over Clarence, a last- second victory over Maryvale and West Seneca, and a tremendous win over an Orchard Park team who was victorious in the first encounter. Five seniors who will be missed next season are jim Schill, Gary Barber, Dick Doll, Ron Pajak, and George Maue. -..1. N 4 'I Winter port JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Mr. O'Reilly, coach of Junior Varsity Basketball, has brought the basketball talent of the Freshmen and Sophomores to its pinnacle. Mr. O'Reilly feels con- fident that in up-coming years our team will profit from their past experi- ences. The junior Varsity plays not solely on spirit and hope of winning but on their many faceted talents. It is felt that basketball will be even more popular in years to come because it is healthful, develops sportsmanship and a common bond between players. WRESTLING The wrestling squad, in its second year, has shown improvement over last year's team. The facts that no punishing holds are used receives no obiections from parents. I-Hgh school wrestling is a clean sport that beckons to those that are skilled in using their muscle- power. Mr. Mead, the team's coach, has squired the team, smoothing out rough spots and developing a sound wrestling technique. 82 -3c.,UJ.u-lab SWIMMING In our modern school building we have various new athletic facilities. One of these is our wonderful pool. As a result the sport of swimming has been introduced at Frontier Central. Under the able coaching of Mr. Walsh, our team competed with beginning squads of other schools. The various events in this sport include: the 50 and 100 yard free style, 100 and 200 yard back- stroke, 100 yard breast stroke and the 200 yard free relay. Also there is a diving contest, 75 yard individual med- ley and 200 yard medley relay. The members of the .swimming team worked hard to develop their skills and firmly establish this new sport.
