OUR ASCENDANCY The realm of make-believe began with the presentation of the three act comedy, Star Crazy. In December, 1946, we saw the An- drews family and friends ambitious to become stars in various manners. The hero of the play Roger Bezinque, wishes to become a baseball star-youth and the fatale femme Bette Layden, 11ot-with standing. Evelyn Nichols is determined to be a famous short story writer-plus having a hand in match-making. Margaret Jane Zortz, older sister of the family, is having trouble with her lover, Frank Ry- bnick, who is a baseball star. The lover's troubles are caused, in part, by a glamorous movie star, Sally Shonk, a.nd, in part by dear old astromer dad ,-the forgetful, lovable Junior McFarland. All these aspirations become more involved because of the reluctant, grumbling maid, Colleen Simone-and the high-pressure promoter, John D. Tur- lip. Need we say that everyone, well-from there we go steadily to the 'Winnah ! Yes, -at the District Speech Festival in Chanute, March 29, the one act drama, Submerged, came through with highest honors. The little Irish cockney, Bill McNeil, was rated among the best. Roger Bezinque the coward, showed a.cting ability in creating a realistic and forceful character. The blustery and spicy Oscar Deplue gave fine support to the cast. The courageous and determined Bob Lavery, the sympathetic, understanding Commander, Bob Terlip, the tender, sacrificing dreamer Arthur Turigliatto complete this undefeatable cast of players! Hats Off! ' ' While we look upon another 'WVinnah! The High Window. We shall never forget the fine portrayal of the wicked Aunt Emily, by our one sophomore in speech, Carole Didier. Orchids to her! She was suported by fine portrayals of the nephew by John D. Turlipg the secretary by Modestyne Cornellag and the newspaper reporter by Bette Layden, who solved the mystery. There were heights of dramatic acting reached many times in this one act drama. We felt the strength and domination of the Aunt, from the first word she spoke to her friend, Judge Craig, Bob Pazzie. This play rated a third-but missed a two rating by one point.
