I8 rf ll A E' ix' JQQQUAQ puma Rumors confirmed .... gossip denied. ..success stories .... May's diary tells all in this exciting, exclusive column that tells you how eleven of our most prominent and successful Americans gained their success in ten years. Hello readers .... This is May Mann again with another gossip column, tell- ing you the inside news on America's most prominent celebrities and business men. Since this is May 22, 1966. .which is ten years after I graduated from Froid High School. . I have looked into the lives of my old classmates and found them interesting so I decided to put something about them in my column. The bi surprise when I wrote this was the sudden engagement of Manny Rued, top and leader and drummer, to a sweet little hometown girl from Montana. Whether this will lead to the alter or not, I can't sayg maybe yes, maybe no. Manny is right on top with his new style orchestra--it seems every- one from nine to ninet loves his type of music. He's riding high and we wish him, and his bride to be, luck. DCN'T COUNT ON-- - NEWS SPLINTERS--- I saw June Young the other night, looking stunning in an elaborate evening gown. She is a writer of plays and has two successful ones running on Broadway now. She has also written many novels which are indeed best sellers.June didn't have overnight success but now she has reached the top and is there to stay. Her family holds first place in her life though. She has two darling little boys and a girl, and her husband is making the army his life's career. SHE'S THE DOC--- I had a personal interview with Dr. Ethel Johnson yesterday and she seems to be one of the most intelli ent women I've ever known. Dr. Johnson is known the world over and as you ai know, won the Nobel Peace Prize last year. She travels from the darkest jungles to the largest metropolitan areas doctoring those in need. Dr. Johnson certainly doesn't look like a hard working woman because she is so charming. By the way she is getting married June Z2.. MONTANA MRS..--- Mrs. America this year is from Montana. It's not very often that the south- ern belles get defeated, but Mrs. Jean Purvis is someone for Montana to be proud of, This sweet little mother has brains, beauty and has raised a family of four as if it were simple. She also cooks and sews all the family's clothes. After Mrs. America and her husband return from a trip to Bermuda, she will star in a movie. Jean has been offered a contract from M. G. M. but she says she pre- fers being a housewife. All I can say is, What a lucky husband. STRIKE IT RICH--- Clenard LaMar, the multi-millionaire, has bought a new yacht and is plan- ning to sail around the world in two weeks. I-Ie made his money on oil. I-Ie owned a series of filling stations for both cars and aircraft and made enough money in seven ears to retire. He was a farmer's son but he was ambitious and secretly fond ofythe sea. He is married and he and the family live in England during the summer but come back to the U. S. in the fall and winter months so the children can attend school here. '9 4, 2 . There is a large factory, the sign says Tillie's Best Toilet Soaps. Ervin owns much of this city, he was the mayor for four years but then he lost by one vote, cast by his campaign manager. His motto is All for one and that one me. Ervin is happily married to a multi-millionaire's daughter but they have no children. NEWS THIMBLE--- Janis Emswiler, remember her and her flute? Janis went to college at Kansas for four years and started teaching in Columbus, North Dakota. One night she took her flute out just to see if she could still trill and a talent scout heard herg now she is playing solo flute in the symphony orchestra at the Metropolitan Opera. She has never married, although she has suitors in- numerable, she is waiting for someone who will share her love for western music. ITEM ROUND UP--- .Iust a couple of weeks ago I was on a tour through the mountains in north- ern Canada. I saw a figure riding toward me. He was wearing a stunning uni- form. He looked very handsome and seemed to know it. He stopped and read a sign offering many thousands of dollars reward for the capture of a murderer at large in the Canadian forest. He smiled and said, The, mounties always get their man. As he rode nearer I recognized him as Maurice Hughes. He was recently engaged to a Canadian starlet but it only lasted long enough enough to get their pictures in and out of the newspapers, so now he's just playing it real cool. ABOUT MISS McNEIL--- It's hard to believe, but Carreen McNeil is talking about permanent re- tirement from the acting game. In spite of her new contract at 20th Century Fox and a substantial pay raise, she's ready to answer yes to two all-important questions: Marry me, and Give up acting. Surprising as it may seem , Carreen once thought of being a secretary, but be on guard Hollywood, a 'Montana Boy' is stealing your talented actress. CONGRATULATIONS PR OF, --- Went over to a lovely college town last week end and attended the inaugu- ration of Roger Bertelsen as the new president of the college. Roger studied civil engineering at the college and taught there after his graduation, and soon was boosted up as professor. Such success, and it doesn't go to his head either. I had such an enjoyable time visiting with him and his wife and three darling children. His wife, by the way, is a graduate of Froid too, C571 and strange as it may seem, their daughter's name is Sharon. Wouldn't you ex- pect him to be a college president, or something like that--and a very good one, too? . y 77 - 34. The first part of the year the P. T. A. is kept busy with activities that include summer roundup and arranges the pre-school clinic. Two officers were elected this year, namely Mrs. Douglas Sorenson as secretary and Mr. William Luft as vice president, to serve our local P. T.A. for a term of two years. It is the policy of our local P. T.A. to follow the rules handed down from the national P. T.A. and carry over two officers each year. This year the president, Mrs. Marion Ostby, and treasurer, Mrs. Alma Slevin, were held over to serve one more year in the official capacity as officers for the organization. UIHNIL LUNCH PIHIGIRAM The School Lunch Program is supported by a charge of twenty cents per child per meal if a child has regular meals in the program and by a federal reimbursement at five cents a meal. This federal money is collected by the county treasurer and credited to our account in Wolf Point. ln the fall of each year patrons have been asked to donate the project food that they feel can be used to good advantage in meals that are cooked. , Two cooks serve and prepare the food for the school children. Mrs. Sven Bertelsen and Mrs. Agnes Kveseth have been with us as cooks for four years. They serve an average of one hundred and forty-five meals a day during the nine months to the children of our community. This year the P. T.A. furnished new plastic compartment dishes and silverware for the school lunch program. We know our lunch program is a good one and we are very proud of it. 43 Q l ' i ,g5,.....a,!.r 1 1 . - l - ' Gi-Q Our Meat Carver Is that so? ., , Y .. r Sink it LeRoy We're stuffed Yea Froid Eat hardy boys Poor Froid E Who Got Q1 Married? -1 VA Q X . ,H ft N 4 , 6 i f -nQ.....,L1. Russell, on November ZZ, 1956 in the school gym. Net proceeds of the play were 95135. OO. The play takes place when Grandma Sims QLois Reiterj comes from the farm to visit her daughter and finds a situation which is not to her liking. It seems that her daughter, Mrs. Abbott lFay Christoffersenl, has become a social climber since the death of her husband, and the three Abbott children and Sadie, the maid, flflora Ostwaldl are having a miserable time. The very day Gram arrives, Mrs. Abbott is bringing three upper-crust guests home for the week end, They are -Mrs. Carlson fSharon Slevinj, an effusive society matron, Edwin Carlson fDaniel Nicholsonj, her son whom Mrs. Abbott insists her daughter Joyce fDee Ryderl must marry, although she loves Jim Meyerson fRoger Bertelsonj, a local telegraph operator. -Another of her guests is Miss Quelch lVerna l..aMarj, an unlikeable spinster, who runs an exclusive girls' school to which Mrs. Abbott intends to send Marion fSharon Tasal, her fifteen-year-old daughter. Willie QDonald Knudsenl, the thirteen- year-old son, is also suffering because his mother won't let him do anything he wants, and insists that he practice on his violin so that she can impress people with her cultured family. Determined to put a stop to all this Gram invites Cousin Oscar lGerald Schlagelj, the black-sheep of the family, to the week-end party. None of the family had ever seen him and mistook Patch fDick Moothartl, a desperate criminal, for him. Since Patch needed a hide-out he decided to play the part of Cousin Oscar and accepted the invitation and brought his wife Mable fBar- bara Reiterj and daughter Bubbles fMyrna Ericksonl. The party is hardly what either Mrs. Abbott or Gram expected and when the criminal relatives find it necessary to get rough many complications arise. Gram settled the whole mess by getting ahold of her trusty shotgun. Mrs. Abbott realized that her children were fine the way they were. Jim and Gram got handsome re- wards for capturing the criminals. Marion's bosom chum Dottie Morgan QVerona Bogerl and Willie's side kick Shorty QDick Cooksonj helped with much of the excitement and were just as mixed up as anyone. The juniors presented Mrs. Margaret Mclvor, the director, with a gift and a corsage in appreciation of her many efforts and hard work. The Girls' Glee Club, under the direction of Mrs. Mclvor, sang two numbers between acts. The senior class served a lunch in the hot lunch room after the play. The play cast and their dates went to the home of Fay Christoffers en for lunch. Many favorable comments regarding the performance were heard. It was said that the characters were very well suited for their parts and played them well. The gross receipts totaled 5183. 94. One of the highlights of the play was that Della Taggart, next to the young- est sister played by Margaret Christoffersen, and her sister Marie, next older sister played by Jean Grovom, had not spoken to each other for twenty years as the result of a lovers' quarrel. They carried on all their arguments through Rose, the oldest sister, played by Ethel Johnson, who was a calm, thoughtful person. Jerry Taggart, played by Manny Rued, was the four sisters' nephew whom they took care of when he was left an orphan. When Jerry brought Julia Wyatt, his girlfriend, played by Carreen McNeil, home to meet the sisters, things really began to pop. Marie fainted when the Wyatt name was mentioned, Della got very angry with Julia and accused her of things she couldn't understand at all. Rose finally told them of Della and Marie's quarrel over Julia's uncle many years ago. , The other characters were: Ruth Taggart, the youngest and only married sister, played by Janis Emswilerg Erma, Ruth's married daughter, played by Norma Beckerg and Maurice Hughes as Ted MacArthur, Erma's good-natured, loud mouthed husband who is very egotistical, and a show-off with a very per- verted sense of humor. Donald Wyatt, Julia's uncle, was played by Roger Bert- elseng Randolph Sayles, Ruth's fiance, was played by Ervin Bakkeng June Young played the part of Susan Gray, the Taggart's housekeeperg and Timothy, the Irish gardener, was played by Clenard LaMar, After the play the cast and their dates went to Carreen McNeil's home for lunch, The Poplar play cast was invited to the play as guests of the class in return for an invitation to their play. Entertainment between acts included a vocal solo by Roger Bertelsen and several piano solos by Sharon Jacobsen. The girls' Chorus also sang two num- bers. Mrs. Mclvor, the director, was presented with a gift and corsage in appreciation of her valuable time and efforts. Mrs. Bennewitt, the make-up director also was presented with a corsage. This was some of the talk heard around the halls of FHS while the seniors were planning to sneak off, without letting anyone know when and where they were going. But with the wise junior class around the news leaked out and everything, except the time they were leaving, was known by the time they left. At about 4:00 a.m. , March ZZ, we all met at Margaret Christoffersen's home and ate a big breakfast which consisted of eggs, bacon, rolls, hot chocolate, coffee, oranges, grapefruit, buns, and many other things to start the day off right. At approximately 4:55 we pulled out of Froid and headed for Great Falls. The cars taken were Carreen McNeil's racin ranch wagon, Mr. Fahn's screaming Chevrolet and Roger Bertelsen's flying ghrysler. Our des- tination was Great Falls, Montana. On the way we stopped at Fort Peck and saw the dam, we stopped in Saco and went swimming at the I-Iot Springs, and saw some very beauti ul scenery. As soon as we arrived at Havre we went straight to the college. Duane Olson took us on a tour through the college and around the campus. Afterward we went down town, ate dinner, had our cars serviced, saw Jimmy Westberg, and then on to Great Falls. When we arrived in Great Falls the first thing we did was to find the motel where we were staying. All of a sudden we saw a big sign saying HFERGUS MOTEL, so we pulled in and registered. After getting settled and everything, we got cleaned up and went to a show at the Liberty Theater and saw Rebel Without a Cause. After the show we ate supper at the Park Hotel, went for a drive around town and then back to the motel. The rest of the evening was spent talki.ng and watching T. V. That poor T. V. set didn't get much chance to rest while we were there. The next day, Friday, March 23, we got up bright and early, went to breakfast, and then started out on part of our tour around the high oints of Great Falls. Some of the things we saw were the brewery, water falls, and Old Town. Some of the dare-devils of the class went right down to the falls and practically stuck their feet in. After dinner we fooled around down town, spending our hard earned money. Friday night Margaret Christoffersen and Jean Grovom went to the show with Mr. and Mrs. Fahn at the Civic Center. They saw l'll Cry Tomorrow. Saturday turned out to be another sunny day for us and after breakfast we girls and Mr. and Mrs. Fahn went through the orphanage. We all fell in love with some of the cute children, the boys were only from three to ten years old though. At 2:00 Saturday afternoon we visited the printing press of the Great Falls Tribune. That evening the rest of us went to I'll Cry Tomorrow. The girls had all gotten their hair cut so they were really in style when they went to supper with the boys and Mr. and Mrs. Fahn. The boys all bought some pretty stylish hats too. Early Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. Fahn, Ethel Johnson and Carreen Mc- Neil went to church. Our dinner that day served as both breakfast and dinner. The lights of Froid sure looked good to us when we rolled in at 8:00 that night. Q. N ,. MHWWIQ X f. . ,i X ' 1, gg! fl A '51 Q E QQQE7 Foreword ..... Another year of sweat is over at F. H. S.
