I was sleepy and I must have driven farther than I thought, because it soon started to rain so hard I had to stop. Fortunately there was a huge old house nearby so I thought I would go in for awhile until it stopped. It grew darker, lightning flashed, thunder roared, I saw a dim light and knew someone was home. I went to the door and knocked, it opened very slowly. Then a loud noise sounded from within. It scared me and I was nervous and shaking, so I started back down the stairs very quietly. Then I heard a very weak voice say, Come in. As I looked up I saw that it was a tall, stooped, darkly clad person who was very old, wrinkled and toothless. Then the lightning flashed again and I recognized her as Anita Stewart, an old classmate. She gave me a very nice hello and asked me to sit down. The room was very dim but when the lightning flashed I saw an old man with a long beard reading a book of knowledge.- I recognized him as Gary Tate, also an old friend. I didn't want to disturb him so I thought I would hang my own coat in the closet. As I opened the door a skeleton fell out. I got-scared and jumped back. Finally I leaned closer and thought it was someone I once knew. Then I recognized Larry Carr. I shoved him back in and went to my chair. Suddenly I heard a loud crash as some window glass was broken. Looking over that way I Saw the elderly Gary Shorter sitting amidst the broken glass. I asked him how he fell through the window and he said he came down the drain-pipe because it was quicker that way. Then the dinner bell rang and an old, gray headed, fat, Wobbley maid entered the room. It was Lee Avonne Berry. She said hello and asked me to eat some of her cooking. In the kitchen sat Myrna Hart, wrinkled and smoking an old pipe. Bob Rout was sitting at the table and said I couldn't talk to her because she couldn't hear or talk. After dinner I decided to explore the house. As I wandered through an old dusty parlor I saw Patsy Roark and Phyllis Hatton singing a lonely church hymn. I didn't want to in- trude so I hurried down the hall and there was Elsie Hedge dusting the furniture and Bar- bara Goodwin sweeping the floor. They said hello and I ventured on to a slightly opened door. As I peeped in I saw Norman Snyder in his old basketball suit practicing some field shots. His suit was too small and he was pretty stiff, but he still hadn't lost his technique. And there of course was Charles Ruble still carrying his towels as usual. In another room I found Linda Welton telling Don Williams his fortune. It seemed he had lost his job at the Golden Goose Resort and I couldn't understand why. She offered to tell my fortune and as I looked into the globe I began to see highway 50 and as I looked closer I saw old F. H. S. As the picture moved to the lower hall I saw Miss Marie selling tickets to a ball game. Then I saw that We were playing our old foes, Bruceville. Mr. Mauck was sweating and nervously wringing a towel. Mrs. Lee was giving a small child a bawling out for running through the hall. Mr. Carr was trying to hold a little girl and take tickets at the same time. Then the picture moved to the Home Ec Department and I saw Miss McCoy bending over her littered desk grading some 15 day old papers. As the picture blurred, I dimly began to see Miss Wilson directing the boys glee club. I saw Mr. Archer sitting there to keep them from chewing bubble gum. Miss Petts was in the library catching up on the latest Literature. While Mrs. Dollinger was keeping study hall. She was explaining some Algebra problems to the freshmen. The picture then changed to downstairs when I saw Mrs. Forbes, Mrs. Marchino and Mrs. Beuscher standing in the hall talking over the days happenings. The picture then blurred and the globe went blank. I thanked Miss Welton and left. 12 After a short time I went over in one corner of the room where Charles Bates was practicing boxing. He has just been voted the fighter least likely to become heavyweight champion. I went to another corner and found a panel door. I pushed a button and the door open- ed. I came upon a stairway which led to the basement. There I saw Marvin Cook in old overalls firing the furnace. He gave me a friendly smile and asked if 1 had seen Jo Ellen McCord. He said she was home on vacation from Hollywood where she played the part of Mrs. Frankinstien in the movies. I went back upstairs and saw it had stopped raining. I told everyone good-by and started my long journey home. Among the children on the play- ground, there were twenty-six little first graders eager to learn their 1, 2, 3's and a, b, c, 's. This class consisted of Barbara Baldwin, Shirley Ann Carie, Marvin Cook, Donna Dossett, Cecil Durham, Alice Gilbert, Barbara Goodwin, Mary Ruth Hatton, Mar- jorie Hatton, Elsie Hedge, Loretta Kelly, Fern Maxwell, James Parker, Harold Lee Phillippe, Frieda Mae Roach, Catherine Ramsey, Larry Riggles, Charles Ruble, Jackie Schultz, Gary Tate, Barbara Theriac, John Wampler, Linda Welton, Wayne Welton, Virginia James, and Bobby McKibben. Miss Marie Powell, our patient and understand- ing teacher is still teaching here and is still as wonderful as ever. We finally struggled through our first grade, not knowing whether we liked school or not but gradually getting used to the idea of a little work and also getting tc know each other better. We then went to the second grade and there we were separated. Some of us were in Miss Marie's room and the rest in Mrs. Mildred Fossmeyer's room. During the year we had three newcomers. They were Anita Stewart, Robert Rout, and Donald Williams. We had, what we thought at that time, a large class, twenty-nine. We moved on to the third grade where we were all together again, with the exception of Barbara Baldwin, Donna Dossett, Jackie Schultz, James Parker, Harold Lee Phil- lippee, Frieda Mae Roach, Larry Riggles, Barbara Theriac, Wayne Welton, Virginia James, and Bobby McKibben. We gained three more newcomers which were Charlene Cardiau, Louise Vieke, and Joan Hanks. f In the fourth grade we all moved to Mrs. Mary Van Meter's room. Our newcomers, Veronica Barrett, Jo Ellen McCord, Nancy Sebring, Jimmy Shouss, Norman Snyder, Norman Lamkin, Phyllis Hatton, and Patty Venable, doubled our losses, who were, Cecil Durham, Alice Gilbert, Marjorie Hatton, and Loretta Kelly. In the fifth grade we had to be separated again, some of us stayed in Mrs. Van Meter's room and the rest went to Mrs. Helen Bobe's room. This year only three had left us, they were Jimmy Shouss, Joan Hanks and Norman Lamkin, with one newcomer, Patsy Roark. Then came the year when we moved to the sixth grade. We were all together again and our teacher was Mrs. Helen Bobe. We had five to leave, Charlene Cordiau, Fern Max- well, Jo Ellen McCord, Patty Veneable, and Nancy Sebring, so that just left seventeen in our class. Next was the year we moved to Junior High. Mrs. Burnett was our teacher, whom we all loved. That year we had five more to join our class. They were Charles Bates, Larry Carr, Lee Avonne Berry, Gary Shorter, and Clarence Wenkle. In the eighth grade Mrs. Burnett was still our wonderful and understanding teacher. That year we had just two to leave our class. They were Louise Vieke and Clarence Wenkle and only two entered our class and they were Donnie Hoffman and Jo Ellen McCord This year we made quite a lot of money. 17 The next year was the big year when we became Freshmen. That year on Friday, September 15th, we were initiated by the Seniors in the presence of the entire school body. Some of the other big events in our lives at that time were, Saturday night, Oc- tober Zl, a Wiener roast at Lester Williams pond. Thursday, December 14th, when the girls entertained the boys with a dinner served in the Home Ec room. Wednesday morn- ing, February 14th, when the girls held a formal Valentine Tea, and Sunday afternoon, January 28th, when the class held a party at the Vincennes skating rink. Donnie Huffman left our class that year. Our officers were: Pre sident-Gary Tate, Vice-President-Charles Ruble, Secretary-Anita Stewart, Treasurer-Linda Welton, Student Councilman-Norman Snyder, and our sponsor-Mr. Mauck. On September 27th we had our first class party of that year. It was a wiener roast and a hayride at Lester Williams' pond. The next year we became Juniors and sold candy as a class activity. We also sold magazines and had a Junior-Senior Reception. ln 1954 we were seniors. On September 3rd, we elected officers. They were: Pres- ident-Gary Tate, Vice-President-Bob Rout, Secretary-Anita Stewart, Treasurer-Larry Carr, News Reporter-Elsie Hedge, and our sponsors were Mrs. Dollinger and Mr. Ar- cher. On September 18th, we had a class party. lt was a pot luck supper and dancing. Together, we put together the book which we called the Fritchtonian, had a successful play called, The Boarding House Reach , and out of our class treasuary we left the school a gift to help pay on a new scoreboard. During our High School years, we had made enough money to take a trip. On May Znd, we left for Washington D. C. Our sponsors and two other teachers went. They were Mrs. Dollinger, Mrs. Lee, Mr. Archer, and Mr. Mauck. Our class consisted of Char- les Bates, Lee Avonne Berry, Larry Carr, Marvin Cook, Barbara Goodwin, Myrna Hart, Elsie Hedge, Phyllis Hatton, Jo Ellen McCord, Patsy Roark, Bob Rout, Charles Ruble, Gary Shorter, Norman Snyder, Anita Stewart, Gary Tate, Donald Williams, and Linda Welton. . .-' U ,- g.
