My name IS Joe Ive Itved here In town stnce T955 Thats about twenty years I guess I know a fellow who went Insane tryInq to save hIs money Now he s gtvmg It all away HIs name IS Foster but that s not Important What s Important IS that I recetved some of that money and I went to the cIty to spend It Let me tell you about It .lust as I hIt the maln htghway a taxt whIzzed by dotng about ntnety wIth a state trooper hot on Its taII I dectded to tom the fun When the trooper fInaIIy caught up Iwas rtght there wtth my ears open The taxt drtver was a woman named Lots Green She was really mad and satd she wouldnt answer any queshons But trooper Burrows seemed to have a way wIth women She ftnally admttted that she was takIng her fare a character named Smtth across the border He owns a gambltng castno north of here and some of hIs patrons suspect that the wheels of chance have been tampered wtth I lost a Itttle there myself Well Burrows took them to the statIon and I drove About ten mtles out of the ctty I ptcked up a man walktng along the road He satd hts name was Tucker and he was trytng out some new shoes hed destgned for people who have to walk a lot I guess he wtshed he d had some thtng Itke that when he was a boy By and by we passed a new gravel pzt The stgn called It Jtms and Vtvtans Place Tucker satd that they dtdnt make much money but that they IIve there for senttmental reasons Some people are funny you know It seems that all the telephone poles In the county are covered wtth PICTUFGS of Martan Lanphere She s qutte POIIIICIOD runntng for governor now They tell me she has htred Shtrley StraIght the famous cartoonIst to draw Welfd cartcatures of her opponents When I got to the cIty I spotted a doll who was demonstrattng eye cosmetIcs She told me her name was Betty Sue Feaster Unfortunately she was all booked up for the week I bought a paper and went to my hotel I always read Herb Wtlltams column on happy marrted lIfe He recently marrted hts fIfth wtfe so he should know somethtng about the subtect The theatrtcal page dtd not have much news except that Alyce Dunmng has been stgned as understudy to Martha Raye I trted to call the desk to see what was gotng on In the hotel that evemng The gtrl at the swItchboard was ltstentng to an Interesttng conversatton so I watted When she dtd answer she satd her name was Deanne and that she wasnt busy anyttme I dectded to take a walk In the elevator I struck up a conversatton wtth a btg tall man named Carlm He satd he used to be a basketball player In hIs younger days Now he Inflates balls for the btg games In Madtson Square Garden When I reaclred the mam floor of the hotel I nottced that Sptke Jones and hts Band were featurtng a new pIanIst Besste I sat down and ordered a lunch The walter trted to sell me the days spectal a Swtss Cheese sandwtch per fected by LeRoy Wtnans the famous cheesemaker He told me that Mr Wtnans cheese had the btggest holes In the Industry but I couldnt see eattng a sandwtch full of holes and I wasnt hungry anyway I lust wanted to ltsten to the mustc That Besste was some hepcat Next morntng my head felt terrtbly btg so I went to get a hatrcut The barber shop was full and I had to watt Some of the men were havtng trouble at home because thetr wtves were ustng Joyce Champltn Nfltxes Instead of prepartng thetr own meals Mtss Champltn recetved a good offer to work for the Red and Whtte Stores but she preferred to stay wIth Market Basket for some reason The televtston was on all the ttme but no one paId any attentIon untII Jackte Gleasons show came on He has a new group of chorus gIrIs hand pIcked by Nflax Crooks and dtrected by Bob Freeman tn famous dance Instructor Maxs eye for women ftna ly pa d off The star of the chorus was btlled as Sweet Genevteve I hear she has ten chtldren at home too When my hatr was cu I s ar ed for home The sun snone brtghtly on the btllboards along the way and I was home before I knew It Tomorrow I have to go back to work at the flea hospttal A woman named Phyllts Green runs the place She used to work wtth people but they drove her bugs Well I had a lot of fun In the ctty and I met some Interesttng people too Maybe you recogntzed some of them 17 . , . . . , . . , . . . . , . . . . . , . 1 .
