Nationally it was the year of the presidential assas- sination. The youngest president in the country's history, John F. Kennedy, was shot down by a sniper as he started his election campaign. Lyndon johnson became almost the certain choice of the Democratic party for the coming election year. Many possibilities existed in the Republi- can party, but no one could say for sure who was goin-g to get the nomination. Some of us followed this closely, for we were to vote in our first election. It was also the year the New York Yankees went into the World Series with the best baseball team ever assem- bled . Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers had other ideas however. After only four games, the Dodgers were the World Champions, and Sandy owned a new World Series Strikeout record. In big time college football the University of Texas was on its way to its first undefeated-untied season and its first national championship. They were to meet the na- tion's number two ranked, Navy, in the Cotton Bowl. Things were happening at Friends University, too. The fund drive for the new Fine Arts Center was nearing com- pletion and construction was to begin in the spring.Sever- al class rooms were remodeled in Davis Administration Building. On A floor, the Northwest wing was converted into a student lounge. It was also the year that Ye Ole Student Pub opened in room A-7. That year the Second Annual All-School Banquet was held on November 16. The first Ugliest Man on Campus contest was held that year.
