F S.S. RECORD JUNE 13, 1954 If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in Common hours. -WALT WHITMAN As you, the members of the Class of 1957, look to the future, each desires to attain a full measure of real success in the years to come. Recently a distinguished gentleman told a large group of young students that there would be only two or three in his audience who would ever know success because no more than these would be expected to contribute to mankind something comparable to a cure for an incurable disease or the discovery of a new use for electricity. All the others would live unin- teresting, humdrum and ordinary lives and, consequently, would have to be counted failures. VVhat nonsense! There may be none in this Class who will achieve such suc- cessf, but all of you can gain a full and lasting measure of achievement in the years upon which you now enter- abilities lived up to, a job which brings real satisfaction, membership in a happy family, contribution to the en- richment of all with Whom you come in contact, citizen- ship in a wholesome and peaceful world, a full life well lived. These certainly are important ingredients of a successful life because these a1'e the ingredients of a re- warding life. If your days at Friends, Select have helped to develop such dreams deep within each of you, then I feel our job has been well done and your lessons have been well learned. 1711. F S.S. RECORD JUNE 13, 1957 New Admini tration Improves Select G. LAURENCE BLAUVELT Headmaster A.B., A.M., Trinity College DEAR Semoizsz By the time you read this most of you will probably know your plans for the inunediate future. For a majority of the class, college or 'further study is the most likely courseg but whether you will have succeeded in being accepted by the college of your choice, or whether you will have to be content with what, in your opinion, is second choice is something I have no way of knowing. Naturally, I hope you will have had all of your hopes realized. However, whatever the future holds may I urge you to take it as it is and make thc most of it. Someone once wrote that we learn by our mistakes. No doubt we should, but it is small consolation when our hopes and dreams are not fulfilled. And yet, which of us can tell what is really best for us at any given moment? It seems to me that the really successful man or woman is the one who can turn an apparent failure to his or her ad- vantage. During the years that I have taught I have seen hundreds of students who have gone on to college. lVlany were disappointed when they did not succeed in entering the college that seemed to them most desirable, but with very few exceptions I found that a year later they would not have changed their lot-even if they could. Eight Dear Master Larry, We would like to thank you, Master Larry, for the many things you have done for our school and for us. Not only has the school itself been im- proved, but also the students themselves who now take a much ,greater part in all school activities. In the two years in which you have been our headmaster we have seen many changes come to Select. Under your assistance and leadership the Student Council has assumed new importance and has instituted such things as student run study halls and the student court, which teach responsibility to us and are a valuable experience. The academic standards of Select have also been raised with the addition of new teachers and higher work standards. New classrooms have been added which were much needed, and additional space for team practices has also been c1'eated. Everywhere the general appearance of the building has been greatly improved. You have also been available to assist us in such things as choosing our colleges and planning our futures, and your advice has always been good. You have been sincere in your desire to help our class in many ways, and for all this the Class of 1957 thanks you, realizing the value of your advice for us now and in the future. In other words, as Seniors, the future belongs to you. No one can be responsible for your future success or failure except yourselves. During the two years in which we have been together, I have come to know most of you far better than you perhaps know me. I have tried from experience to guide and to encourage you fand at times I have undoubtedly scolded youj to help you to help yourselves so that you might bring out the best that is in you. You have been a good class and I am sorry to see you leave us. You have achieved much and I am confident that you will continue to do so, but you are now on your own for the first time. We here at Friends' Select will watch your progress with hope and confidence, and a prayer that you will not stumble, but even more, we pray that if you do you will have the faith and courage to get up and go on again. We have faith in you-believe in yourselves! Good luck! Sincerely yours, Wwe?
